Today, let's talk about the fascinating history of the architectural gem nestled in the center of Sri Lanka, Nalanda Gedige. If you search on Google Maps, you'll find it marked as the center point.
It's said that Nalanda Gedige dates back to 1893 when it was discovered by British colonialists. However, it's worth mentioning that its history goes much deeper.
In 1970, it became part of the Mahaweli Development Project and was submerged in the waters of the Victoria Reservoir. The underwater temple resurfaced on June 13, 1985.
This site is of great historical significance, as it's believed to have been a center for Hindu worship during the reign of King Vijayabahu I (1153-1186). It was a place of great religious importance and scholarly activity.
The unique architecture of Nalanda Gedige combines elements of Hindu and Buddhist traditions, and it's a testament to the cultural richness of Sri Lanka.
It's a place that continues to captivate visitors and historians alike, offering a glimpse into the rich heritage of Sri Lanka.
නාලන්දා ගෙඩිගේ
මාතලේ සිට දඹුල්ල දෙසට යනවිට නාලන්දා හoදියෙන් දකුණට හැරී නාලන්ද ගෙඩිගේ තිබෙන ස්ථානයට ලගාවිය හැකිය. (පාරේ බස් එකක උනත් යන්න පුලුවන්. නාලන්දා රෝහල ලගින් බහින්න. පාරේ බෝඩ් ගහලා තියෙන්නේ.)
නාලන්දා ගෙඩිගෙය සම්බන්ධ මත දෙකක් ඇත.
**1. **ක්‍රි. ව.8-10 අතර කාලයේදී පල්ලව සම්ප්‍රදායට අනුව ගල් පමණක් යොදාගෙන ලoකාවේ මධ්‍ය ලක්ෂයේ මෙම ගොඩනැගිල්ල ඉදි කර ඇත.
අතීතයේ වෙලාව බලාගැනීමට මෙම ගොඩනැගිල්ල භාවිත කල බව සදහන්.
**2. **රාවණාගේ පුත් ඉන්ද්‍රජිත් සමඟ ඇති සම්බන්ධයයි.
එනම්,
රාවණගේ පුත් ඉන්ද්‍රජිත් සිය යාගහෝම කටයුතු වලට මෙම ස්තානය යොදාගත් බව සැලකෙනවා. පසුකාලීනව ඉදිකරන ලද නාලන්දා ගෙඩිගේ මුදුනේ ඉන්ද්‍රජිත් කුමරුගේ කැටයමක් ඇතිබව සදහන්.
ලoකාවේ හරිමැද ඇති නිසා විශ්ව ශක්තිය ගබඩා වූ ස්ථානයක් ලෙසද සලකනවා.
පසු කාලයේ බෝවතැන්න ජලාශය නිර්මාණයේදී මෙම ගොඩනැගිල්ල සම්පූර්ණයෙන් ගලවා අසල ඇති උස් බිමක නැවත ගොඩනගා ඇත. අද අපට දක්නට ලැබෙන්නේ එම ගොඩනැගිල්ලයි.
පසුවදන-
බෝවතැන්න ජලාශය ඉදිකිරීමේදි කලින් තිබූ ස්ථානයේම පස් පුරවා උස් බිමක් සාදා නැවත නාලන්දා ගෙඩිගේ ගොඩනැගූ බව "නාලන්ද" නම් පොතෙහි සදහන්.
