I think it depends on the matchup. If you’re against Katakuri or Enel you go Second Always. Anything else is preference in my opinion, like I usually choose to go first into Red decks but Yellow or Green you go Second. The deck has 12 2k counters and 4 Gum Gum Jet Gatling so you’re gravy on early counters to save the first life or two.

He could have played the King before the attack so He could have assigned 1 more don to the leader and the opponent's 2 k counter would have hot countered.
