There’s probably a reason she doesn’t have a channel. She probably doesn’t know a lot about cars or how to fix them. Which is why she works in the office.
From an R230 owner. Spectacular video! Very detailed inspection. Tons of these on the used market now at that tempting price and uneducated buyers should come here first and get a lesson on what to look out for. 2 things to add: 1) the hood has a latch on the right side that will allow it to go full vertical position. See if it will lock there and 2) at 20:28 check that rubber seal at the base of the rear window. Give it the rain test. Be sure it doesn’t leak water into the trunk, because all the electronics for the roof and the ABC are underneath the floor in the rear wheel wells. A common problem with why those two things start to misbehave and throw expensive errors is water corrosion from rain. Beautiful car, Mrs. Wizard and fun as Hell to drive.
I like ChrisFix's method for permanently cleaning headlights so they'll never yellow again. You wet sand them with a medium, then fine grit. Then clean them and let them dry (they will have a haze on the glass). Then you mask off the area around the headlights, and spray a coat of clear coat over the headlights. The clear coat will fill in the light scratches from sanding to make them crystal clear, and also protect from UV yellowing.

"How come Hoovie can get good cars for others but not for himself" He absolutely can, and does.. (look inside of his garage) but I'm bout to describe what youtubers like Hoovie do. Open an LLC. Now you have a business. Purchase a vehicle. You can now "write off" that initial purchase (we will come back to that later), now service the car and film film film everything possible that could be good content online. After paying for service, do a few videos with the car.. do some stunts or some funny skits or whatever he decides to do with it. Now sell the car.. hopefully for a profit, but if it's a loss (especially with the service costs) then it's a loss.. bummer. Now returning to the "Write off" part. Since his business (one of them) is youtube.. he can write off (taxes) the purchased vehicle expense, the parts and labor to repair it, and any other expenses encountered with that vehicle and the filming of that vehicle segment. When it comes to the end of the year and he has all of his youtube revenue come in.. before he pays a giant tax bill on income, he deducts all of his expenses needed for his youtube job, including vehicles and other items I listed.. also depreciation on vehicles he has kept but continues making videos of (as long as it serves a WORK purpose, you can write it off) he can write off fuel (gotta drive to make the videos right!?) and so much more. At the end of the day he makes a huge profit off of the cars that seemingly he lost his "ass" on because not only does he save on taxes for the loss taken on the vehicle, but the videos created with the vehicle (sometimes numerous videos) generate a fantastic income! I don't know how accurate socialblade is, but it attempts to calculate the revenue that youtube channels make. With guessing income by channel, it can vary WILDLY because it depends on who you partner with and who decides to place ads on your videos with some paying much more than others, so social blade has a range of a MINIMUM amount that he could make and also it shows a MAXIMUM amount he could make. With hoovies garage as an example, according to that site, it says he makes a MINIMUM of $19.6K a year and a MAXIMUM of $314.3K. While that's a huge spread, even if you take the median number.. that's a damn good income for having such a fun job and not only that, this isn't his only income.. the guy owns a restaurant franchise as well! He's an inspiration to me.. guys living the dream.
$5,500 is basically "free"? He already said good examples are in the $10k range. "Basically free" cars are cars that don't get cared for, the oil doesn't get changed, and the indifferent owner drives the car into the ground while looking for the next car to destroy.
Brian Weir yes free. I sold my dads that was $105k when new and I got $5250 and I can assure you it was mint, spent it’s life in Arizona. That’s free. Total money pit for sure. I dare you to own one.
Regarding the headlights, I had a similar issue with my 2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee. What worked for me is using a dril with a polishing tool attached (foam) and then with Meguiars head lamp polish gently polish the headlight unit. Less is more, don't overdo it. It takes a little patience but the end result is pretty nice. Saves you a lot of money buying replacement headlight units.
Congrats! Beautiful SL! Had an 04 CLK 500 (needed the 4 seats) until very recently. That engine start/run sound sounds like home. :) Love the hard top though!!
The best thing for faded and yellowed headlights and really anything acrylic imo is xerapol. Usually comes in a nice kit with some appropriate grit 3M micromesh and it just works. Requires a bit of elbow grease, but results were always good. Just polishing with micromesh from 3200 to 8000 grit also works well, just finish of with some fine rubbing compound, more labour intensive though.
As for car to buy the SO two years ago next month I bought my wife a brand new Mazda 6 to replace her 2006 Honda Pilot that was closing fast on 200k miles. There was strategy involved that paid off. It put us in position to get me a 1996 Miata this Spring rather than be scrambling to replace a REALLY long in the tooth Pilot.
After spending 3k on repairs on my R230 it's the most amazing car I've ever owned. Having said that, a faulty pneumatic pump caused dozens of seemingly unrelated problems. So first stop, consider getting a new pump for weird errors related to central locking and the roof. Also changing the crank pulley (harmonic balancer), engine mounts, trans mount, sparks and oils has made the engine super smooth. I also recommend changing the drive belt and tensioner and guide pulley because they perish quite quickly and worth changing while you are doing all the work. You car is near perfect and you'll feel amazing driving with the roof down on a sunny day 😁😁😁
The 204 vintage is good (previous ones had teething pains). M113 V8 is rock solid, though not sporty (only the pricier AMGs are sporty, and even then...). No supercharger, no turbo to go wrong and prematurely wear down the entire drivetrain. If no adaptive suspension, and if the vario roof is sound, you've got a solid all-rounder GT. Good choice.
@@abdullahbouhamdan9666 I've put plenty of mercedes in service mode with bad hood struts. My daily cls55 was one of them. You just have to move the hood with your opposing arm instead of relying on strut pressure.

Another great video. R230 has crazy strong handling and ice cold a/c here in 104* Vegas, but rear struts, ABC pump, 3 hyd roof failures. Your roof works perfectly, enjoy it.
@@neilmurphy845 Well its proven to be "safer" if you can call it that. It was a new System they developed that does special things like: when it rains and the brakes get wet it will automaticly put the brakepats slightly on the disk (very slightly) so it doesn't get too wet and therefore loses too much breakpower. i am not a expert on this System but my Dad (german Mastermecanic with his own shop) told me about it. its basicly a typical german overengeneering thing.
Thanks for the video. I recently bought a 2005 CLX 500 with 50k miles for $6500. I love it and you showed me the condition is probably similar. I do have some dash issues but nothing I can’t live with. Wish I had someone like you here in Washington state. Dealership was impressed said it should last a long time. I have little invested so whatever I invest more I’m cool with. Drives wonderful and is fun. You are a good husband!
I know the SL55 very well. I love this generation of SL’s. They are stunning to look at and drive. I’ve done Toronto to Ottawa in my ‘87 Carrera and a friend’s SL. ... I’d pick the SL every time. At least until the dash lights start coming on... and that’s why I own a Porsche. Thanks for the video. Congratulations Mrs.Wizard.
The missing button is the boot( trunk) release. I have 2006 SL500 in the UK, which is the SL550 in the USA and although it's a lot more reliable for the electrics on the car I did have to get the idler gear replaced on the engine and a variable timing solenoid replaced, for engine reliability the older simpler engine has the edge even with 16 spark plugs.
It is a good buy. You don't have dynamic seats so don't have to worry about the air bladders in the seats blowing. Has a M113 motor with a 722.9 transmission and its probably had the updated electrohydraulic control module replaced. other than some front and rear suspension joints/bushing repairs its in decent shape. Just have to keep an eye on the ABC and SBC pumps. Those are the kickers
The 3M Trizac 3000 pads, can get a 10 pack for 35 bucks, is what to use on that light oxidation. Then a slow, careful wipe on of 3M UV resistant clear, in two coats. One Trizac 3000 and two UV clear wipes are for sale as a kit around 10 bucks. Really beats buying a bunch of sandpaper grades and having to mask everything off to spray clear to make it last. For heavier oxidation, just use 800-1200 grit sandpaper before the Trizac. 500 before that if it's completely destroyed and needs mowed down. I have tried everything. As you've learned, don't trust any single pass solution.
We have the same year same color. So far changed driver's door paw, voltage teg and brush kit,hyd hose for hyd shocks, front and rear air pods for shocks, overflow hose i leaned on and broke, and pulled the wifes hat out from under the seat so the seat works now. The wife loves her car. And both batteries.we keep it covered under the car port. Watch out for mice as the wiring cover has some kind of vegetable it was made out of so im told. I think that button your talking about is to pop the trunk. O and adj the glove box. Things missing tow screw, passenger seat cup holder and key cards.we love ours smokes all the muscle cars. Love the slap shifter.
I worked at a Benz dealership from 1986 until 1993, and after the 1992 S Class debacle, and the cheapness of the 94 C Class, I could see trouble ahead. Left to work on Toyotas and never looked back. That said, I still have a soft spot for the W123, W124, W126 bodies. I think that they are the best looking ever too. I am under the impression that 2003-2012 had the disintegration of the wiring harnesses. And of course the " Brake by wire" issues too.
I have an '07 SL55, awesome car Mrs. Wizard :-) The broken button is the remote trunk release/ closer (pull to release, push to close). The trunk open warning light is also there. On the drivers side hinge of the hood there is a tab that will let you open the hood ALL the way... Very handy when admiring your engine :-)
I really do not understand why people want convertibles. I owned a Fiat 124 Spyder, and while it was fun to drive with the top down, it....Wasn't that much fun. I was very young and the car had no air conditioning, so that's what I had to do. Other than the greater ventilation, I did not get any practical value from this system.
See my comment, I was surprised to see other comments involving Citroens, not many of us weirdos who have had experiences with the french nightmare ! Lol
Try Sumtech Bright Solution Headlamp Restoration kit... they have $20 kit that you can try out. My tip is to use the precleaner to get all teh yellow out first. Then use the polish a couple of times... all steps by hand... no sanding... once you got the polish done... let it dry for a minute... then use a dry towel and rub it clean... the headlight lens should be clear... and finally apply the protectant to give it the sparkle and crystal clear finish. No sanding unless it is extremely yellowed and opaque.
Looks like hoovies sweet sweet TH-cam fame has finally elevated the wizard to more than a Midwest shop......new motorcycle, multiple new cars, new full time mechanic .....business is good and well deserved.....good job growing this channel....
Great job. Great video. Congrats Mrs Wizard on the new fun car. Great info on this car. I just can’t wait to see how it holds up as a fun car so I can see if I want to buy my wife one of these or stick to the Honda Fit or Kia Soul my wife regrets selling to get a 7 passenger Mitsubishi Outlander to haul the Fam Damily, grandkids on the weekends. I think I need a Merc SL500 now so thanks. You all are the best. Thank you so much.
The Mitsubishi Outlander is one of the best, compact SUV's in the used market, especially the third-generation and the solid, 3 L V6 engine. I am still waiting for a buy this, not that video for Mitsubishi and it should be up this afternoon, I hope. The third-generation, Toyota Highlander is also another option for an SUV and it is mid-sized. It also seats eight-passengers.
Hey you should train Mrs Car Wizard to know what happens when the system goes into secondary brakes as you said. If you go into diagnostic mode the system does exactly that. Because it's very unusual to brake that way. Becausr there's only brakes on the front axle no abs no brake booster and it comes right at the bottom of the brake pedal. You usual operating area is completely dead and uf you don't know it you won't push far enough and you can't when sitting wrong
ABC suspension SBC brake system Speedometer failure Tank baffle knocking Water leaks to boot and ECUs Roof glitches Broken interior switches Balancer Shaft issues (mainly 3.5) Timing chain and guides Some reasons not to buy.

Car Wizard those rubber boots on abc struts are like 60 bucks on ebay both or 60 a piece genuine from mb, it would be wise to replace them because of dirt ingress. It would be also wise to flush the complete abc and put fresh hydraulic fluid (febi makes fluid for abc , FEBI 21647) drive the car and check for fluid color if it needs one more flush.I change abc fluid and control aby filter every 3 years. If taken care of abc suspension can run for a long time like citroen hydractive and activa suspensions here in europe do.
i love my autel scan tool been using them since 2011, i currently have a maxisys pro with the J2534 box as the VCI and before that i had the original maxidas ds708, these tools have made me the go to guy for technical things at all the shops i have worked at, they have so much capability its amazing i even get into some key coding and programming with it.

I know there is a warranty on the SBC pump. I just cleared the counter for now until I can get the car in to claim warranty.

“She still has that car...” dude, you’re Homer and Bart is snapping that whip...
There is a reason these cars are basically free in the used market.
$5,500 is basically "free"? He already said good examples are in the $10k range. "Basically free" cars are cars that don't get cared for, the oil doesn't get changed, and the indifferent owner drives the car into the ground while looking for the next car to destroy.
TIL $10,000 is free.
Brian Weir yes free. I sold my dads that was $105k when new and I got $5250 and I can assure you it was mint, spent it’s life in Arizona. That’s free. Total money pit for sure. I dare you to own one.
Player nope I’ve owned one. Leaks from half a dozen places like all German cars after 80,000 miles. Total junk.
Michael's going to be the next mechanic with a TH-cam channel. This guy knows his stuff.
Michael sounds like a Great Tech and Addition to the Shop!
I find myself, with all the craziness in this world, looking for this kind of normalcy. Living for it even. Thank you Wizard.
Well put
As for car to buy the SO two years ago next month I bought my wife a brand new Mazda 6 to replace her 2006 Honda Pilot that was closing fast on 200k miles. There was strategy involved that paid off. It put us in position to get me a 1996 Miata this Spring rather than be scrambling to replace a REALLY long in the tooth Pilot.
Mercedes lens are coated, I had to use a 3m headlight kit to restore mine. The clear has to be sanded off, wetsanded and buffed out.
You car is near perfect and you'll feel amazing driving with the roof down on a sunny day 😁😁😁
I knew the SL500 could boogie ... But i didn't know it could Dance !
Mercedes hoods usually have a service mode as well that allows the hood to be put 90 degrees and it will stay there.
Not if the struts are broken, it can still hold it on 60° angle but not 90°
@@abdullahbouhamdan9666 I've put plenty of mercedes in service mode with bad hood struts. My daily cls55 was one of them. You just have to move the hood with your opposing arm instead of relying on strut pressure.
The wizard is the TH-cam champ gonna really go very far with understanding and unbiased Outlook while doing a great job teaching civilian's the proper way. I hope you continue making videos because I've learned so much watching your videos I was a shade tree mechanic but now I try too be more proactive love it keep the content coming !!!!!!
you know you have seriously auction addicted customers when they try to pay their lamborghini repair bills with cars instead of money :P
Another great video. R230 has crazy strong handling and ice cold a/c here in 104* Vegas, but rear struts, ABC pump, 3 hyd roof failures. Your roof works perfectly, enjoy it.
Mercedes officially extended the warranty on the SBC system to 25 years back in 2018.
Nice...
I am sure there is an endless pool of qualified personnel to take care of that SBC error.
Why did they use that system instead of a normal ABS system
@@neilmurphy845 Because Germans. It really is an impressive system but also very costly
When i work at a Mercedes-Benz dealer as a tech. We hated working on cars with the ABC system. Pain in the ass
5:44 The Mercedes channeling its inner lowrider.
I like the fact that Michael gets more involved with the videos and that way gets the appreciation for his (knowledge of) car repairs.
Your SBC is under extended warranty in the US. Should have taken it to Mercedes and they'd fix it for free.
Wow, it's like 25 years/unlimited miles, right?
Yeah it’s cause wizard likes to waste shop time
The 3M Trizac 3000 pads, can get a 10 pack for 35 bucks, is what to use on that light oxidation.
The Car Wizard is a lucky man ;)
haha
That was cute lol. More mrs wizard!
Congratulations ! The SL is on my radar. Enjoy be safe and of course prosper.
The idea of the Allánte was great, the actual execution, not so much. The XLR came far closer to being an SL fighter, but, alas, GM shat the bed.
Mrs Wizard deserves more screen time! :)
Michael looks like he just loves to get punished..........with Mercedes, lol
The storage room in the trunk is better than my 2016 BMW Z4 was and is better than the trunk in my SC430.
That kid Michael is going to be a great asset for your shop!
He's a man
He put 3 of the lift arms under the Mercedes in the time it took the Wizard to do 1. LOL
Shots fired Wizard!!!!
Kid? He looks 35-40.
Yes. He would be a great asset. Can it be done?
@@OMGWTFLOLSMH fr he’s gonna end up screwing Mrs Wizard if he hasn’t already
I really do not understand why people want convertibles. I owned a Fiat 124 Spyder, and while it was fun to drive with the top down, it....Wasn't that much fun. I was very young and the car had no air conditioning, so that's what I had to do. Other than the greater ventilation, I did not get any practical value from this system.
Wizard playing with his suspension: "That's really weird..."
Citroen owner: "Meh."
I’d like to see him with a Citröen in his shop. It’ll be a long video
@@ProctorsGamble That, or one VERY short one. Pull in an XM with a Hydractive fault and watch Wizard pull his hair out.
When Mrs Wizard is around I be quiet, but when she walks around the corner, I be talking again..... Lol
You can use the vice grip pliers on the struts to hold the bonnet up.
Congratulations Mrs. Wizard, it's a very nice car!
Looks like hoovies sweet sweet TH-cam fame has finally elevated the wizard to more than a Midwest shop......new motorcycle, multiple new cars, new full time mechanic .....business is good and well deserved.....good job growing this channel....
The missing switch on the driver's door is the trunk release.
These are going to be a great investment! Beautiful car
ABC suspension
SBC brake system
Speedometer failure
Tank baffle knocking
Water leaks to boot and ECUs
Roof glitches
Broken interior switches
Balancer Shaft issues (mainly 3.5)
Timing chain and guides
Some reasons not to buy.
Not every one of them are affected.
He did call it a "hooptie/hoopty".
better than a bmw though
Really sharp looking car! The 3 m kit is the best one to repair the headlights. It sands the plastic using different grits. Mrs Wizard must be very happy!!
Michael looks like a motivational public speaker who decided to work on Mercedes.
Daniel Jennerman he’s one of our undercover agents
Daniel Jennerman Screw you too man.
@@CarWizard he just seems like a really nice guy.
@@danieljennerman7549 ? your first comment was a backhanded compliment..you complimented michael but in turn also insulting the wizard as being dirty and stupid. perhaps rephrase your comment next time...
@@megamachine7818 I'm curious as to what it originally said.
Mercedes Benz really used some interesting technology I thought the Sensotronic was odd but this definitely took the cake.
interesting technology = pay MB when it goes wrong (as it does) One of the worst cars made in the 00's I owned 2, SL500 and SL55. Rubbish cars
What was sensotronic
i love my autel scan tool been using them since 2011, i currently have a maxisys pro with the J2534 box as the VCI and before that i had the original maxidas ds708, these tools have made me the go to guy for technical things at all the shops i have worked at, they have so much capability its amazing i even get into some key coding and programming with it.
Mrs. Wizard needs to get a youtube Emmy for her camera skills
hahahahahahahahahaha
0:42 and there I was thinking how nice it was with the wizard letting mrs wizard do a segment. Very funny.
That’s a sweet ride Mrs Wizard!
$5500 for a 500SL ?!?!
Yep, that’s how you can tell they’re garbage. There’s a reason a 90’s SL will cost you $10k and a 2000’s SL will cost you half.
@l was wrong about everyhting At this age condition is everything. Quite often, when watching these videos I wonder how the cars would get on in a British MOT (safety inspection) test. I'm sure they leave the Wizard's shop safe but you here some horror stories from him about rust etc.
Love it! Mrs. Wizard is very deserving given all the work she does to shoot & edit videos! I hope she really enjoys her new Merc.
That's one of the best model, if Im car wizard, i can buy such car and make it like brand new again...😁😄🤗
I would totally watch Mrs. Wizard and Michael inspect cars she likes. It felt like a good flow for those first few minutes.
Oh sorry wizard forgot to say one of only a few cars made that can do 140 mph all day without breaking into a sweat really strong fast gt car
Love how you appeal to folks that don’t work on cars and us folks that do! Great technical information and entertainment All at once!
