The first indian movie with sound itself had 7 musical numbers...so i think you could say music and dance were inseparable part of entertainment in india.
Shahid Kapoor (the male lead in Jab We Met) is a great dancer, he was part of a dance school and actually used to work as a backup dancer in movies before he debuted as an actor. You didn't really get to see it in the film of his you saw, but he's up there. Hrithik and Shahid are some of the few actors I've seen really do justice to Prabhu Deva's choreographies.
Sunidhi and KK dominated.. damnn Also, we dont talk enough about Neeraj Sridhar and Mika Singh for how many hits these two have given to the industry Edit: obviously Sonu Nigam too. He’s 🛐
Songs I *HIGHLY RECOMMEND FROM THIS LIST* :- 1. Ek Pal Ka Jeena(sung by Lucky Ali who was once a very famous Indian pop singer) 2. Dard E Disco(sung by Sukhwinder Singh who's an absolute legend and has one of the most powerful vocals you can hear in Bollywood) 3. Love Mera Hit Hit(sung by Neeraj Shridhar who's also a legend. He's originally a band singer, his band name being Bombay Vikings. He was very famous in the 90s due to his band's really fantastic remakes of old classics and bringing new sounds in Indian music industry. He then move on to playback singing) 4. Twist(also sung by Neeraj Shridhar) 5. Aai Pappi(also sung by Neeraj Shridhar) 6. Dus Bahane(sung by two legends KK and Shaan)
Shahid Kapoor ,Aditya from Jab we met is actually a fantastic dancer . He started his career as a background dancer . You should checkout his dance numbers. They are awesome. Also please react to Phir milenge chalte chalte by sonu nigam its just mind blowing and mv is also insane
Indian people have a longer memory for music and dances than the movies themselves. That’s why the biggest stars are the ones with the most iconic songs like SRK, Katrina Kaif, Madhuri Dixit, Salman Khan, etc. You can’t really become a superstar (as in a star of the MASSES of India not just the big cities) without iconic songs associated with you. You know you’re a superstar when the audience in theaters literally starts cheering and dancing with you when your songs come up. There are videos on youtube of this happening with Katrina Kaif and SRK and Salman songs. It used to happen all the time with Madhuri and Sridevi too.
"sir in the red tie" is Govinda- he is ICONIC. You guys should react to some of his stuff. he OWNED the 90's. all his movies were megahits. he can also dance really well
Tumse milke dil ka, Phir milenge, dhoom again.. these define the dance numbers to me 😌. I can always see some random group of students dance to these songs on every saturday cultural evening. They missed Desh rangila tho, such an iconic one.
So, the songs you are talking about are called "Ïtem Songs". They are very specific to Bollywood movies. And It has been in the industry for very long. Since the 70s (but don't quote me on that). The very first dancer/actress that comes to mind is Helen ji. She is a legendary dancer. You should check her songs out. Also, Zeenat Aaman. These songs, yeah, they don't really add any value to the plot or anything. They are just there for commercial purposes most of the time. These are the songs that are released in trailers just to you know hype up the movie. Also, these songs go on to become very popular sometimes. The movie might turn out to be shit and do badly at the box office but these songs do hella well. Also, these are the songs that get performed in award shows or other such events because of their scale and popularity. Hope this helps a bit.
I was just gonna comment that. In addition to what u've said it also comes with the genre that is so specific to Indian film in general i.e. "Masala movies/mass movies". It has all types of genres mixed in it like a blend of spices that's why it's called 'masala'. It's there to cater to all kinds of ppl be it villagers going to theater once in a year or the common middle class families or the people in the cities trying to escape from their monotonous life. So these movies definitely have 1-2 of those 'item songs' where it's just for fun & enjoyment of those people going to the movie theaters & dancing there itself. It's like a celebration of some sorts as u may not know those persons but u start dancing on the same beats & start bonding with each other. This is why theater experience in India is a very different thing
Here are 10 missing best dance numbers from Bollywood 2000s decade from this Video list: (1) Song: Ishq Nachaya Kare-Movie-Karam (2) Song: Door Se Paas-Movie-Musafir (3) Song: O Makhana Ve-Movie-Dil Maange More (4) Song: Dhoka-Movie-Johnny Gaddaar (5) Song: Pyaar Aaya-Movie-Plan (6) Song: Ishq Sammandar-Movie-Kaante. (7) Song: Afreen-Movie-Bhagam Bhag. (8) Song: Jaan mein Dum-Movie-Dum. (9) Song-Fanna-Movie-Yuva. (10) Song-Rabba-Movie-Aks. Wonderful Reaction. Take Care. Cheers👍
These kinda dance numbers were popular because before the days of streaming music and youtube, there would be dedicated tv channels to play these music videos all day, so that probably played a big part in the inclusion of these types of songs in the movies even though they necessarily didn't move the plot of the movie forward.
some dance numbers dont make sense at all but in yeh jawaani hai deewani, the diliwali gf song was part of the sangeet (dance showdown tradition in indian weddings so they did attempt at least to make it part of the plot), some take place as part of a nightclub scene in movies, or dance numbers are part of like a courting stage of a guy tryna impress a girl, most songs are suppose to metaphorically represent the leads falling in love or going through a heartbreak etc so yh dw u will eventually get used to it but ofc for me i have songs i detest or eventually grow to love
The guy who made this compilation has precisely put all the best songs of their time. And with this kind of quality and production, most of them could have easily rocked in UK, America, and overseas.
Songs through Dream sequences are the most effective way to fit in the story line.... dream song from Movie "AWARA" (1951) is known as the starting point of this trend in Bollywood.... now these item numbers you rightly said are through celebrations, parties, festivities in the story line .... folklore including children songs is the cultural tradition of story telling in Indian Culture...
Origin is Natya Shastra. The oldest compendium on theatrics in the world. Natak means dance and acting, therefore drance is integral to theatre in India. Bolliwood has derived these antics from Natya Shastra and Folk Culture ..
The fact that main aisa kyun hoon video song ft. Hrithik Roshan was not even included in 2004 list even though it won the National award makes me wonder does the video creator even know about best dance videos😂😂😂
I think sometimes, these "dance" numbers are mindlessly added to increase the appeal of the movie, inducing the movie-goer to step into the cinema. But many a times, it is an actual device for the plot. For example, in Kaho Na Pyaar Hai, the "dance" song, 'Ae Mere Dil' (1:56) is where the female protagonist sees the male protagonist for the first time (at a club, where he is leading the dance) and this quite possible in reality as well. My husband and I first met at a Bollywood night, meaning that the club plays Bollywood songs and you dance on it! It is very integral to how we spend our free time (dancing on these numbers) and connect with our core emotions and form core memories. So yes, sometimes it is just an "add-on" but sometimes it represents real situations which include dance.
All these songs.. The feels 🥺 Yes dance and musical numbers has been intricately connected to bollywood as long as I remember.. All dance numbers are not item numbers but both has presence in movies since long back.. And yeah we dont need to think about how to incorporate it.. It doesn't matter.. It could be dream sequence, randomly music playing and everyone dancing, starting on streets or beach, at sone function, marriage, at the start or at the climax or even if between a sad scene through memories or flashback.. Its automatically ingrained in our brain to accept it.. 😂 That towel dance "jeene k hai chaar din" which you were wondering where do you fit it.. Its one of the song with iconic hooksteps of bollywoood.. 😂
Watch Rakesh Roshan Full Episode of Indian Idol...Because there Hrithik Roshan's father says Hrithik's secret information. A doctor tells Hrithik that he will never be able to dance. But he fought that weakness and now he is a best dancer...
It's not suck-winder - Effra. It's Sookh-vin-der. He has some great, vocally challenging songs. Listen to his "Taal Se Taal Mila." 100% will blow ur mind with his voice and percussions for sure.
If you want see the classic Dance number you will play Piya toh se naina lagey from movie Guide or Hoton mein aisi baat from movie Jewel thief. Lata mangeshkar voice is so soulful here. My favorite song is Nindiya se jaagi bahar from the 80s movie Hero.
Check out this song called "Kanaa" Its not from Bollywood or Tollywood just an underrated south Indian song but the female singer and the humming is so addictive i swear 😗
Though there are lots of dance songs that are missing in this video... even after that one can see how many Songs are sung by SONU NIGAM ❤️. But I don't know why you people are not taking about it. Sonu Nigam's range, versatility is exceptionally brilliant.. The energy he put in those songs will make anyone to groove on it.
The old bollywood numbers had some essence and creativity that is lacking in now days movies same old same old things back in the days lyrics were fun and meaningful as well .
Actually , in India it's like for musical numbers, movie was created not the other way around . I just know a bit history . We are under british rule for almost 200 years and for motivated ppl everywhere through theater or through truth lyrical music some great, brave persons who fought for our land motivated others to join with them. And also for pray to god we have so many musical scores to sing . That's the reason may be it naturally come into our movie cultures since very beginning. 🥰🥰If someone know more properly please let me know. Because , in bengali I heard this history that some newspaper sellers that time also motivated through songs.
Ayyy don't tease "Pappu can't dance", the songs from that movie were acc really good! You need to do a long 2000s songs podcast with some of the ones from this list, that era was THE BEST.
A lot of these songs are definitely not necessary for the plot but these songs success boosted the success of the movies back in the day. There were no TH-cam songs to go and watch back then so to see the visual performance of this chart topper song you had been listening to on the radio for the last month, you had to go to the cinemas. Music and Movies have always been intertwined in Bollywood. There have been more than a few movies with just simple cookie cutter plots that have reached amazing heights just because their songs and dance numbers were bangers.
Been asking to react to Pranavalaya and Tose naina laage songs 🥲, please check them out. Especially Pranavalaya video song is literal art. Both are absolutely beautiful songs. Would recommend to check out Pranavalaya live rendition by the singer too, at the audio launch of the film. Gorgeous.
In the eighties, hindi movie songs moved to outdoor locations with dozens of dancers in the background. So thats where the scale really multiplied but since budgets were low they were usually a bit cheesy. In the 2000s the budgets followed and the settings changed to clubs or football fields.
"Guli Mata" sung by Shreya Ghoshal & saad Lamjarred .. this latest new love song , And this song is in hindi & aerobic lenguage , you both should react on this song☺️🇮🇳
Pleaze please please check out Crazy kiya Re with Aishwarya and Sunidhi - Aishwarya is a rare star who has had absolute bangers sung by both Shreya and Sunidhi - both of their voices suit her so perfectly!
Basically dance no.s are start by Legend Shammi Kapoor in late 50s and 60s and then Jetender from 60s - 80s . And on your question before srk there was many actors who make dance no. Hits like Mithun and Govinda and there was Salman Khan before him too who make iconic dance no. From his first movie MPK.
4:51 Dance and music is always part of indian film industries way to the beggining. Also the main aspect this film is to Entertainment. Approach is very different from western film industries. But there main purpose is Entertainment.
The peak is movie: Hum Aapke hai Koun (1994) with about 14 songs and one of the longest movies of that time. It's Madhuri and Salman Khan for the movie
11:06 you know those dance battles at weddings you were talking about? *SHARARA SHARARA* was THE IT GIRL song for girls. Any girl who thought she was hot was dancing to that number and you bet there were fights to claim it. And the movie was a certified flop but the song is a cultural reset.
Dance numbers are important because indians love dancing in weddings, parties and such songs become hit and popular in no time which will eventually help the movie to succeed...
14:18 yeah they are still my favourite irrespective of who created the compilations. Especially Neeraj Shreedhar' songs. I can't believe you haven't reacted to Neeraj Shreedhar yet. He is a legend. We want a Neeraj Shreedhar special.
i love bollywood and it may seem not adding anything to the plot but it did. the lyrics of the songs were actually told a story about the scene itself~ in malaysia, we always get a bollywood movie on a saturday evening every week and we got the whole translation for the song themselves, and next we'll be crying along with the scene 😅 on the sidenote i have to agree with efra on nowadays bollywood movie, the songs did feel as a filler instead
The dance numbers and songs are the identity of Bollywood, people in west know it's Bollywood because of dance songs itself. That's what makes Bollywood different from other film industries. You won't find these kinds of dance numbers in movies anywhere else in the world, because we show our cultural aspects in movies. And it's for entertainment so it's successful as long as it's entertaining audience
Dance and music are an inseparable part of Indian performance and celebration. Our folk plays were full of them and that translated onto camera too. We don't care if it goes with the plot (largely). If you're an artist performing an act for me, I'll like it more if you sing or dance or both. :)) Like someone else here mentioned, even the first Indian films had plenty of songs.
Highly recommend (if you wanna check out some more form Madhuri Dixit) "Kahe Ched Mohe" from Devdas cause you just skipped it out all this time. Kavita Krishnamurthy, Sanjay Leela Bhansali, Classical Kathak Composition. Everything you guys and we LOVE
7:40 right side of the guy 90s superstar Govinda. We all have grown up looking him as inspiration for Dancing and acting. So should react to his 90s songs.
The thing is that Hrithik Roshan had an operation on his knees and the doctor said that he should not dance , but here he is dancing like he does not have any issues.
Did you know that Hrithik Roshans maternal grandfather was born and from Sialkot, punjab, pakistan (before partition) and his paternal grandfather was from Gujranwala, punjab, pakistan (before partition)... lots of people in thr bollywood industry has roots/was born in Pakistan... here's a list of some: Dillip kumar (a.k.a Muhammad yousaf khan) Prem chopra Amrish puri Dev Anand Sadhana Shivdasani Govinda Twinkle khanna and her father Vivek oberoi Gulzar (a.k.a Sampooran Singh Kalra) Nargia fakhri Madhubala Kirron Kher ...these are people who are ON TOP in the bollywood industry...and it also explains why there's probably a lot of urdu used in bollywood
Yeah..But all those songs included were actually quite a rage back then.. I remember loving nikamma kiya and dil ding dong ding and grooving and all songs from mujhe kuch kehna hai.. The time when tushaar kapoor gave chartbusters one after another 👀
Since you said you'll watch a movie from India.. I've been crying out loud... WATCH "Jodha-Akbar... This movie is big... It is epic.. It has Hrithik, it has Aishwarya.. It has AR Rehman, It has Sonu Nigam, it has Medieval History of India ( not very accurate), it has war, it has romance, it has politics... Aah.. Watch it..!!!
I think Bollywood lost it’a uniqueness after 2013-14… it heavily relied on punjabi songs after that and romantic songs sung by Arijit and jubin but before 2012-13 you had versatile singers and music directors like Himesh and anand raj anand,Viju shah. Even Pakistani bands and singers were given chance. Now Bollywood do not have good music director.
The first indian movie with sound itself had 7 musical numbers...so i think you could say music and dance were inseparable part of entertainment in india.
Back then musicals were quite common in the American film industry too
Shahid Kapoor (the male lead in Jab We Met) is a great dancer, he was part of a dance school and actually used to work as a backup dancer in movies before he debuted as an actor. You didn't really get to see it in the film of his you saw, but he's up there. Hrithik and Shahid are some of the few actors I've seen really do justice to Prabhu Deva's choreographies.

Main Aisa kyun hoon is one of the iconic dances. Choreographed by Prabhudeva and danced by Hrithik, complex moves and great sets
Songs I *HIGHLY RECOMMEND FROM THIS LIST* :-
1. Ek Pal Ka Jeena(sung by Lucky Ali who was once a very famous Indian pop singer)
2. Dard E Disco(sung by Sukhwinder Singh who's an absolute legend and has one of the most powerful vocals you can hear in Bollywood)
3. Love Mera Hit Hit(sung by Neeraj Shridhar who's also a legend. He's originally a band singer, his band name being Bombay Vikings. He was very famous in the 90s due to his band's really fantastic remakes of old classics and bringing new sounds in Indian music industry. He then move on to playback singing)

Good music helped many bad films to recover the investment from selling music albums and copyrights.

Pleaze please please check out Crazy kiya Re with Aishwarya and Sunidhi - Aishwarya is a rare star who has had absolute bangers sung by both Shreya and Sunidhi - both of their voices suit her so perfectly!
13:39 THIS! The actor the song the video I feel like everything about this is soo underrated!
Now this is the time to react Helen dance numbers 50s,60s,70s
When almost every bollywood movie had a banger music video , good ol nostalgic times for 90s kids
Srk is such an underrated dancer. He gives his 100% in dance no.s
This is just too much nostalgia. Bollywood was at it's peak from 1990-2005. It's sad we all are getting old.
Next movie should be Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara (ZNMB) of Hrithik
You Guys should do a Podcast on these Songs ❤, It would be a Banger🔥
The peak is movie: Hum Aapke hai Koun (1994) with about 14 songs and one of the longest movies of that time.
It's Madhuri and Salman Khan for the movie
Kindly plz react to dhoom again song. The song the choreo and just aishwarya and Hritik as dance pair is just 🔥
11:06 you know those dance battles at weddings you were talking about? *SHARARA SHARARA* was THE IT GIRL song for girls. Any girl who thought she was hot was dancing to that number and you bet there were fights to claim it.
And the movie was a certified flop but the song is a cultural reset.
my fav songs!!! 2000's always best songs
Dance numbers are important because indians love dancing in weddings, parties and such songs become hit and popular in no time which will eventually help the movie to succeed...
Surely missing Kambakht Ishq in 2001 songs.
Y’all should check out main aisa kyu hoon. The moves and the lyrics are amazing
all of these songs were a happy place for me
14:18 yeah they are still my favourite irrespective of who created the compilations.
Can you please react best bollywood horror movies songs as well. Nice reaction BTW ❤❤
If you like the dance do check out Hrithik Roshan's- mei aisa kyun hun from the list... It's really good❤❤❤❤❤
Did you know that Hrithik Roshans maternal grandfather was born and from Sialkot, punjab, pakistan (before partition) and his paternal grandfather was from Gujranwala, punjab, pakistan (before partition)... lots of people in thr bollywood industry has roots/was born in Pakistan... here's a list of some:
Dillip kumar (a.k.a Muhammad yousaf khan)
Prem chopra
Amrish puri
Dev Anand
Sadhana Shivdasani
Govinda
Twinkle khanna and her father
Vivek oberoi
Gulzar (a.k.a Sampooran Singh Kalra)
Nargia fakhri
Madhubala
Kirron Kher
...these are people who are ON TOP in the bollywood industry...and it also explains why there's probably a lot of urdu used in bollywood
7:32 Waleska, don't sing Jhalak Dikhla Ja too much, ghosts will appear.
The two must reviews out of the 2nd compilation are dhan te nan and move your body :)
Huge respect for the guy who included Tushar Kapoor in this list, because nobody could thought him to be a good dancer.
He danced well on some other song than this song .. he danced really well there!
You should definitely to react to Hrithik’s all time iconic song with iconic dance move called “ek pal ka jeena”
Hrithik actually is a really reallly good actor! That's why he is just so special 💛 Best mover and amazing actor
You guys have to react to crazy kiya re and Dil laga na from dhoom 2!
