Love love this poem. I saw John Agard perform this live in Reading GCSE poetry Live last year. Brilliant...an inventive, powerfully eloquent delivery of a unique, adventurous mosaic of a poem. He IS the poem and the poem is him. Love that voice, man! Would love to locate more recordings of Agard performing his poems live. When he finished reading this at the Poetry Live so, he waved a sort of salute to the audience as he left. The man commanded total respect and I got the sense, as he left the stage, that we'd witnessed poetic and cultural history taking place. Respect.
lol the teacher put this on in my class everyone started laughing and a guy in my class cried of laughter and then we all got detention. Thanks Miss Thomas
I’m praying exposure comes up. Plus j know no story other than chemistry and the darkness out there. So basically I'm gonna fail haha. Good luck tho!!! 💜
Nothing is wrong learning about English history. What he is trying to say is that when we learn, it's always about English or France, but never the black country.
Dude. The narration is "unusual" because "dem tell me" that we're taught to make a poem to fit other lines well so it sounds right and he just clearly doesn't want to follow that.
oh so he is racist is he, considering that this poem was inspired by his history class, where he saw all they taught him was a European view of history it was them that were racist towards the black people. I would say you are the racist one here, as you are assuming as he is half cast that he is wrong just because he is of a different skin colour. its people like you that don't deserve oxygen, if I ever find you, you can bet I will uphold my word. look up Anonymous and maybe you'll find I will
I am disgusted by the level of disrespect from those who are commenting about how this was played in their English class and they 'died' and were 'cracking up'. Ya'll stupid as hell and very uneducated, this poem explains black history and how many of our ancestors were able to stand up to slavery and racism for black lives. Our roots and backgrounds, this explains how our history is not taught as it should be and thats purely due to haters and uneducated fouls who like to comment dumb shit, its deep that some of the black children in the UK dont know the truth about their race because its being erased and turned on.
A brilliant man! As for the racism and the white embarrassment bout colonial crimes - hey wake up .You and your grand father are guilty of mass slavery every time you go to the Town hall or a stately home full of precious art - all bought on the back of a black slave making your sugar,
Shame your not bashing all the muslims that still sell slaves, or the Turks who had one of the largest empires in history and did mass slavery dealing, only the whites, I wonder who the racist really is, as for Agard, who expects us to teach about his history rather than our own, he is quite clearly absurd in his poetry, besides now-a-days we dont actually learn about our own national history, only the history of others, anyone who takes GCSE History knows this.
Oh yeah definitely, me and my Grandads love a good ol' bit of slave trading, in fact, it's my favourite pastime. I am not defined by my ancestors' actions. I am not my ancestors, you racist.
This is not my history we are African people sold into the slave trade however this is interesting to know that you landed in America when your people from Jamaica went to America
