    Here's how I made "Clarence 2.0", the internet-connected call bell. Clarence lives at a local non-profit radio station, and every time a donation is given online, the bell dings!
    How does it do that? Well, watch the video and find out.

    With an ESP and a micro solenoid I bet you could fit everything inside the bell.

      Possibly! I'm considering what to do for V3, so could be based on a smaller controller!

    • @ManfredAckermann
      @ManfredAckermann 3 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      A Pi is a total waste of resources. I agree on the ESP approach and think a micro-relay will also do the job even be cheaper than a micro-solenoid.

    • @ManfredAckermann
      @ManfredAckermann 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I don't want to be rude... It just hurts to use a full blown OS when a ESP does the job even better for 1/10 price. And I have to admit that I like ESP more after working with both for such jobs for not only price but also energy consumption.

    tangential to this project, I have a story about office shenanigans.
    several years ago, my father in law and I used to work in the same office, and the whole bunch of us were known for playing little pranks on each other when we went on vacation.
    we got wind that he hated the sound of a desk bell. I happened to have a spare android phone. So I set up the phone with an email account, and set the notification sound for that email to be a desk bell sound. I turned up the volume and hid it in a binder near his desk, and everyone in the office took turns emailing the ding email account.
    It was hilarious! I kinda miss those days of office pranks.

    • @JeffGeerling
      @JeffGeerling  3 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      Honestly hadn't gone that far. But it would be fun to connect it up to that action.
      You could haphazardly get the data out of TH-cam studio based on percentages, but that data seems to lag by a day or two at least.

      One thing I've never understood about the notification bell is, why? When I go onto youtube, I go in to Subscriptions, and push on what I wan't to see there. I only have time to watch youtube when I sit down at the end of the day, so a notification earlier that day won't do anything....

    • @JeffGeerling
      @JeffGeerling  3 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      @@Wrasko There are many people who don't realize the power of a feed (RSS, subscriptions on TH-cam, or otherwise), and they like having notifications jump up on all their devices all day long. I don't understand them, but according to TH-cam, 10% of my subscribers are like that!

    OpenSCAD is great, despite its rough edges - I do all my "utilitarian" modeling in it. Particularly for dimensional (rather than artistic) models, it's excellent to have a tool that makes it so easy to make everything parametric, so adjustments and iteration on the design are very fast.
    It's also nice that it's completely free and open source, since Autodesk has been gradually tightening the noose on Fusion 360 and I haven't found a lot of other good options that make parametric modeling a first class citizen.

    The flyback isn't needed because the spring back action. It's needed because of the coil of wire in the solenoid. When turned off, that field collapses and that causes the inrush of current. Relays need flybacks for the same reason.

    For V3 you should consider using MQTT to send messages to the PI. Email received events (or maybe YT sub notifications?) send a message to the MQTT topic broker which the PIs client subscribes to. AWS and Azure have good IOT brokers, but it’s not hard to setup mosquito as well

    • @lululombard

    At bed time I have to check if my garage doors are closed. What envision is small box with 2 lights on it. When a garage door, the relative bulb turns on. And if course when the door closes the light goes out. I could position this near the TV where I spend most of time.
    I currently I have a Wyze sensor on each door. I have a Tasker app that responds to the sensor, and currently just says Garage door left is opened/closed.

    Once you're done with the prototype, you can probably get a "real" version made with JLCPCB. You can use a free tool such as KiCAD to design the board, plot the GBR files and have the board made for you. A small PCB like this costs about $2. Shipping is usually the most expensive part of the whole process.

      So far it's been fine-the 5V rail is connected directly to USB at 5V, and I'm using a nice 2.5A power supply that doesn't have a drop when the solenoid hits. If using a cheaper PSU it could be an issue, but it hasn't been in this case.

    • @dduncane
      @dduncane 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@JeffGeerling I'd still go with a decoupling capacitor, current drop can pretty much mess your SD card if they occur at the wrong time. 1000µF/16V should do the trick just fine :)

    I definitely wouldn't pull an amp consistently from the +5v rail. That's gotta be close to the polyfuse limit on the zero. If you've got a mosfet, just connect the mosfet directly to the power source and connect the grounds together.

    • @JeffGeerling
      @JeffGeerling  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I thought the Zero passed through the 5v direct from USB? Maybe I have my Pi models confused...

    • @silverywingsagain
      @silverywingsagain 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@JeffGeerling It seems like you're right, the Zero/ W doesn't have the polyfuse as a cost cutting measure? All of the other Pis have a 1A polyfuse. I'm a little confused too because the Pi Foundation doesn't recommend powering the zero via backfeed current through the usb port. In any case, if there is no protection then the current limit of the +5v rail is determined by the trace thickness on the board. Maybe they intend for the Zero itself to be the fuse? I don't think there's any danger, but I'm just imagining the worst case where the software hangs and the solenoid gets stuck on. Things would probably get warm pretty quick.

      @JeffGeerling  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@silverywingsagain I actually did have solenoid stuck on at one point in testing a long ringing script. I pulled power to the Pi pretty quick... definitely didn't want to burn up the one set of parts I had on hand at the time!

  • @wskinnyodden

    I would have used an ESP32 or Arduino for this project, the PI is overkill. That said you should be able to add features and capabilities to this that the ESP32 or Arduino are not be able to handle, I just don't have a clue what those could be. Considering I do not know the radio station and what they do, how they do it or anything else that could drive ideas this is not surprising.
