  • This is a digital remaster done in 2017.
A 2002 documentary about gentrification in the black neighborhoods of Portland, Oregon.
In the early stages of gentrification improvements are often seen as a solution to persistent crime and blight. But as homeowners replace renters a new class bias can emerge that transcends race.
This edition of the film was remastered in 2017 for improved color and sound.
The Story: Nikki Williams struggles to provide a decent life for her 10-year-old daughter. She takes on drug dealers and a developer intent on creating low-income housing in her neighborhood. While public officials emphasize the need for new affordable housing that will prevent displacement caused by gentrification, opponents fear that the new property will attract crime.
NorthEast Passage is a unique and complex portrait of a neighborhood in the midst of dramatic change. It chronicles the clashes between those who advocate making rental properties available to low-income individuals and those who promote homeownership and increasing investment in an area, even when it comes at a human price.
As seen through the eyes of one woman, this film examines an issue that challenges nearly every inner city in the country.
    [Film contains mild profanity]
A sequel to this film, Priced Out, is scheduled for release in 2017. More details at www.pricedoutmovie.com.

Sure they can afford to live there. If you earn a proper education and meaningful degrees (nothing with the word, “studies” in the title) and then you will hard, then you can afford to live there. The neighborhood is cleaner, greener, safer, and relatively crime free.

But yet because of history we are at the bottom of the racial wealth gap and systematically keep from generating wealth in this country. Unlike other race groups, we can’t pass down inheritance. Just like the wealth from slavery is still in the system- the poverty is too. WE CANT IGNORE THAT! That’s the reason that the problem still exist!!!

@@sepulcher8263 I just Googled "income by ethnicity" and found that East Asian-Americans fall well below South and South East Asian-Americans in terms of income. It looks like the only East Asian-American ethnicity consistently in the top 5 are from Taiwan. Those from India and the Philippines have higher household incomes that those from Japan and Korea. The Chinese are closer to 20 on the list. I'm sure East Asian-Americans would love to erase these facts, since they discriminate against SE Asians. True, he poorest Asians in America are refugees from SE Asia, but the wealthiest Asians here are also from SE Asia.

I feel like people do not realize that gentrification especially in Portland effects not just black people but poor people in general. MANY asian, Hispanic, and caucasian people. My family lost our home on 6th and shaver that we had owned for over 65 years. I feel that if we stopped trying to paint this as just a black issue, and instead as an issue effecting EVERYONE, then we would be more successful in combating it.

Beautiful old homes torn down to put up condos and larger, modern homes.
Now Portland is a pretentious place and unaffordable to the younger generation.
