// ABOUT THIS VIDEO
In this woodworking project, I'm designing and building a custom cabinet for a record player. This project features lots of angled joints and seems complex, but it really isn't, it just has a lot of steps and requires a lot of going back and forth to get the job done.

I'm working on a documentary right now, and I've never heard truer words. "My ideas are more advanced than my abilities". From one artist to another. I feel you. Keep up the good work man.
Thanks AJ :)
Such amazing work. I have my first table saw coming in at the end of the week and got a handheld router for christmas. I found your channeling looking for something to store my records in. This really blew me away. Your such a great artsits. I hope one day to be as good as you. Also thank you for helping us see we all have fears in doing new things.
A lot of the woodworking videos on you tube always come across as problem free efficient and smooth running. We all know in reality when we try to reproduce the projects we see there is a lot of learning that goes along with trying new things and a certain challenges create difficulties. I really appreciate your openness to talk about things like skill limitations and mistakes and aspects that are good enough. I think you have made some incredibly beautiful pieces and I really enjoy your videos. Thank you.
Thanks Bob! Yeah, this project was full of little mistakes. I go into more detail about them on a past episode of our Podcast (Modern Maker Podcast) but, in the end, they were all fine. :-)
My heart rate slows by simply watching your videos and listening to whatever you have to say haha. This is perfect relaxation. Your work is amazing btw.
Thankd Didier...I appreciate it :)
I'm a listener on the podcast and this is the first video of yours I've watched....I'm hooked! Excellent story telling and the cabinet came out great! Nicely done! Subscribed.
Thanks man...glad you found me and are enjoying :)
I really love the idea of a parallelogram for record storage. Records naturally wanna lean to one side or another anyway. I think it works quite well. Awesome design.
The focus on the design and your thought process that goes into your projects makes your channel stand out.
You do some of the best videos on YT. I usually hate it when people blather on & on. You are so thoughtful and precise in your words, that you are a pleasure to watch and hear. This was a tough project, and I wouldn't put this in my house, but it was well done & I thank you for sharing it with me.
Thanks Myck. :-)
i'm a creative/art director of 20 years, just finding my way to woodworking and I'm so excited about learning a new way to make/build beautiful things. i stumbled on your channel and not only do i love your aesthetic and design thinking, i really appreciate your transparency and philosophy about the process. you're a huge inspiration -- thank you!
Thanks Kev...really appreciate the kind words :)
Chris, I finally had time to watch the complete video. I agree with your comment about problems and how to solve them. Thanks for sharing a slice of your time and work with the rest of us!
Hey Matt, thank you for watching, and the support :-)
Just beautiful. Beautifully shot, edited and built. Thank you.
The video was worth watching just for the last 30 seconds. Great job Chris and a wonderful message at the end. Keep up the great work.
That came out bad, I didn't mean the video wasn't worth watching save the last 30 seconds. The whole video was great, but the last 30 seconds were really great and made the video that much better. Is that better? Anyway, you did another great one my Friend. Is this one called the "Drunken Bad Larry" ? ;)
haha...Thanks man - no offense taken. I got what you were saying. I like that "Druken Bad Larry" :-)
A refreshing video with less focus on the actual measurements, sizes and so forth. The production quality is exemplary. Thank you! Subscribed.
Thanks Mads...appreciate it!
Your videos somehow have a calming affect. I'm sure your videos make many people happy :) Thanks for sharing your work.
Thanks Jarryd. Appreciate that :)
Amazing video production quality, don't find many woodworkers with an aptitude for both woodworking AND videography. Amazing stuff.
Thanks Caleb :-)
I waited like 4 weeks to watch this video from when you mentioned it in the podcast, checking in everyday lol, the wait was totally worth it. This piece is beautiful, probably my favorite one of your builds.
Thanks Filipe...that means a lot to be able to meet the hype. Appreciate it :-)
Seriously the build is beautiful, but the story telling is incredible. You have an amazing way with words that truly captivates the audience.
Good work Chris. You are very inspiring.
Thank you kind sir :)
I come here woodworking and stay for the life lessons. The line about problems and perspecitves was great!
+Gopal Sapparapu I come here for woodworking and mute the irritating hipster commentary.
Thanks Gopal!
Your on a different planet then the rest of us. Why PBS hasn't hired you yet for a show is beyond me. Great build. And cheers
haha,...thanks James. I'm still waiting for that call :)
Beautiful and minimalist. I'm still waiting for a shop tour Chris.
haha...I'm working on it :-)
I absolutely love the style of this furniture. It is weird i normally hate modern or contemporary furniture, but everything on this channel i keep saying "man i would love that in my house". Great stuff and great way of presenting it. Love this channel
Thanks Ian :)
Yo! I love these videos. I don't own any type of anything, like not even a hammer. However, this my new favourite channel. It's so beautiful! Thanks
Thanks Zee...that is awesome. I wish more people in your situation would find the channel. I think lots of them could enjoy it for different reasons :)
chris I have been watching your videos for a few months now, I am absolutely loving your channel. You are by far my favorite youtuber and so down to earth, inspiring me to build more each time I watch your videos! Your content always sparks new ideas for me to explore in my own woodworking and that I appreciate.
Thanks Brian - appreciate the kind words. Love hearing that kind of stuff from the viewers :-)
Very nice again young man. What a fantastic way to end my day, watching and listening to you woodworking and inspiring me. Thank you, William
Thanks William. Appreciate that !
I absolutely love your videos. Good content mixed with awesome dialogue. Love how you voice over instead of recording audio as you work.
Thanks. Yeah, that would be tough. Already enough going on with building and filming :)
Well, y'know, the thing about the direction of the cabinet is that a right lean is just much more aesthetically pleasing. It may not be as functional in this application, but while a left-leaning cabinet would improve the function, the form would have a much different effect. It's like in film or photography, if you have objects moving across the frame from left to right, it feels very natural, whereas objects moving from right to left create tension, unease, suspense. This is mostly to do with the direction we read our written language, as these "rules" of composition are reversed in regions where they read right to left. But that all said, a right-leaning cabinet definitely elicits a different response from a person versus a left-leaning cabinet, and I feel like the response from a right-leaning cabinet is the one you'd actually want in your house.
Dave...it's funny, somebody else just asked about this. They were wondering if it could have to do with being right/left handed. I had never thought about it, but said this comes more natural to me because of the way we read (as you stated) and I also used side-scrolling video games as an example...with are overwhelmingly designed to move from left to right.
Yeah, exactly, video games is another medium that's heavily left-to-right-oriented, largely because of the reading direction of the regions games were developed in. It's surprising just how much impact that has on a culture.
woodworking plans
Chris Salomone couldn't you just have flipped the piece around which give you the opposite slant, a left lean?
Looks stunning
Extremely impressive Chris. We all work through our intimidations in this way. Finding work arounds to compensate for what you don't know is how you get really good in the long run.
Beautiful cabinet. And that Smithereens record shows you have excellent taste.
Thanks! That's actually my Dad's record. But I remember listening to it plenty as a youngster.
ALWAYS AMAZED that end narration tied it all together
You are a true story teller. Beautiful all around; project to vid. nice.
Thanks Link :)
Very well done.
I would suggest you to build a vertical panel saw, while you are cutting a lot of plywood sheets. It will make you life easier
No space for one. Also - it's only about once a month that I do this. If it were a daily thing, I'd find the room :-)
yes! this was what I've been waiting on. Hearing you, Ben and Mark (lol) talk about mistakes and finding solutions for em makes me feel at ease. Idk why I assumed everyone had everything figured out and builds should be super smooth. Def helps my confidence. Keep it going, I look forward to every video you put out!
Thanks Silent! Indeed. The project I'm working on now has (I won't call them mistakes) but some unforseen obstacles. They all do :)
In today's video, Chris uses the bandsaw! Nice build!
I don't use it often, but when I do...it's just what the dr. ordered :)
Keep up the work dude. You'll have a million subscribers before the end of the year :)
I doubt that...but I really really really really hope that you're right :)
If you could live from TH-cam, would you do it?
I never have donated to anyone's Patreon but you keep tempting me with the quality content. The furniture is great, the camera work is great, the music is great, and the occasional witty jokes are great. I suppose I should pull out the ol' wallet..
Do it, Do it, Do it!
Boy this video was so nice and therapeutical. It really calmed me down. Also great looking piece in the end!
Thanks Nuno :)
Chris, you're an incredibly talented woodworker, designer and builder. Thanks for doing these videos and sharing your craft.
Appreciate it Tyler :)
I really like that shape chris! Setting the extra layer or dado layer adds an extra 'level' or 'depth'. I think it makes it more cabinet that making it with making the dado's in one layer. looks great!
Thanks Sebastiaan :)
Your work, and the projects by the other gentlemen on the MM podcast, have inspired me to start designing and building my own furniture - slowly phasing out the Ikea, thrift store finds, and hand me downs. One of the firsts will be a console stereo and bar display cabinet. Thank You. (also, you have some fantasic vinyl there)
Nice! that's cool to be a part of that journey :)
Your videos are so relaxing to watch. Great work on the cabinet!
:-)
Seriously, need to do some meditation tapes lol
I enjoy your voiceovers almost as much as I enjoy the art that you create. You always make a great point that relates to each video and I really wanted to tell you how much I appreciate that. You are a rare breed in an endless sea of mediocre creators on youtube. Keep up the great work, Chris.
Thanks man...you're too kind :-)
I love watching your videos. You are a woodworking poet. A craftsman philosopher.
Keep up the work Chris!!!!!
That angle set for the cabinet is really cool.
Awesome dude! I really love those end caps you used to avoid half laps, really smart and nobody would ever know!
...unless of course you broadcast it to the world. ;-P
Another stunning project
Wow, just wow. What a refreshing, approachable, educational, and thought provoking piece of work (cabinet and video as whole). Beyond just a simple woodworking video. This is the video I needed to see today.
Oh awesome, I just got that U-Turn Orbit for my wife this week. Hoping to get it up and running tomorrow. I should build her a cabinet too ;)
Nice...yeah, the record player itself is pretty quick to put together. The cabinet took me a while though :)
Oh my days!what a beautiful design of record player cabinet.Mate, you're so talented.Amazing and stunning works.Well done!Cheers!!
Thanks Mohd...appreciate the kind words
You definitely own your style! I'm a huge fan of your designs.
Not sure if you would be interested in making tapers using only your jointer or if it would cut down production time. But you can get excellent repeatability by tapering using only your jointer.
Thanks! I'd be down to give it a shot. I'll try looking it up :-)
Absolutely amazing designs of all your furniture...very inspiring...if i were rich i would buy them all.
haha...can't wait for you to hit that lottery :)
Turned out great Chris!
Thanks man!
the dynamics of this piece is just stunning!
incredible beautiful piece
I really love the design of this, even if its not your original design, i think it came out great. Ive been a little excited, waiting for this video since you talked about it in the podcast. Keep on keepin on.
Thanks lee...hope it lived up to expectations :)
beautiful as always
Wow! It looks great!
Beautiful design and build. Very pleasing. Great video also. Thanks
GREAT build. Really liked it.
He just gets better and better.
Thanks Craig :)
Beautiful piece.
Another beautiful video Chris, both in terms of the design and the filming. Super inspiring and captivating, definitely going to incorporate some of your filming techniques in my videos :)
Hey J...thanks - really appreciate it! Also, thank you for pitching in on the comments, answering questions etc...
No problem, happy to help & thanks again for the content your produce!
Beautiful video, creation, and storytelling! I would love to have something like this in my house.
:-)
been working on something similar for this last year, Big thick lines are so great on the frame! Love that you tried the slanted approach!
:-)
Gorgeous! Thank you for sharing your process.
Thanks Lee :-)
Absolutely love it!
I've been thinking of building something to sit my record player on top of and house my LPs and when you spoke of this on the podcast I've looking forward to it! You've given me some great ideas and inspiration! Thanks
Nice...if you do it, Tag me in instagram. Always love seeing people's stuff
You do beautiful work.
Beautiful piece Chris.
I really like your style and your documentation of the buildprocess. There's just one thing where I'd like some more detail; the finish.
Thanks. There's a link to what I use in the description. It's pretty much a simple wipe on. :-)
U turn orbit is a great record player!!! Nice project as well.
Yeah...haven't actually listened to it yet...but aesthetically I love it!
Wish he did more videos. So inspiring and satisfying to see such simplistic and interesting designs
Wish I could too JT...maybe someday :)
This is awesome. I have a vaguely similar design for an entertainment center I want to build, and there's quite a few lessons in this project that I can use. Thanks for sharing.
Nice... yeah, I doubt it's a piece that many people will actually build, but hopefully there is something in here to take away either technically or as inspiration/motivation for people :-)
your videos are amazing - both the builds and the insightfulness. very appreciative of well thought out, and passionately produced, content.
Thanks John :)
Thank you, Chris. You are an encouragement and not just in woodworking. Thanks again.
Hands down one of the best looking cabinets I have seen. Would love to own this. Brilliant work! 👍
Thanks Ryan!
Chris thank you for the amazing videos! You are truly an inspiration to keep pushing myself! I trying to catch up to your level as fast as I can, and you have set the bar high.
Beautiful job Chris. Great storytelling. Creative problem solving. That piece has to weigh a ton though 😉. Love the look of it. The stepped design gives it more depth and really adds to it. Thank you for sharing. Love your movies and your projects. They always leave me wanting more...can't get enough.
Thanks Pat - really appreciate the kind words. Yeah, this thing is pretty hefty. I can put up the box (without base) by myself in a pinch, but I don't enjoy it.
your videos are so peaceful
Wonderful build and approach to life. Thank you for sharing
Yes!! finally lol been following along on the new podcast with Mike (a.k.a. Mark) and Ben. I've been pretty excited to see the final piece and you definitely delivered bud looks pretty sweet!
Thanks Mason...glad you dug it and it was worth the wait!
There is nothing wrong with knowing your limitations. As long as you've tried and found them. And are actively working on moving them away from you. I'd love to see another video of you trying the original design, just to see what it would look like and to see if your imagined limitations are real or not.
Thanks Daniel :-)
I agree with Dave Starr that a left lean would improve the function but I come from the point of view of the experience of pulling out a record. I'm a record collector, and I believe like most collectors, I place my records into the shelf with the spine facing out towards myself, making it easier to identity a particular record by looking at the colour or title on the spine. This also means that the cover will be on the right as well. If you have a left lean, it would make reading of the spine easier. And when a record is pulled out, the cover would first be seen rather than the back. Just a thought for your consideration, otherwise it's a damn gorgeous cabinet!
Thanks Ong....on our podcast we talked about it more, and I actually posted a mirrored pictures for people to see. Modern Maker Podcast on instagram from the pic.
Such a beautiful video
Ok,I could not handle the tilt to this thing, I'd get seasick just looking at it. But I love your work and I love that you are doing this credenzas. Someone needs to bring them back in to style.
:)
absolutely beautiful work chris!
Thanks Graz!
Nice going! I dig your outlook.
Another great build! good job Brother! My thought on being a furniture designer / builder is that its more problem solving them wood working some days....and if you can think 3 steps ahead your build will go smooth!! Keep up the awesome builds and excellent videos!
Amen to that!
Hi there from Portugal,
Nice :D
Obrigado(Thanks)
awesome vid , nice project, and well narrated. looking forward to the next one
Thanks Patty...already in the works :-)
I so love your videos on many levels
:-)
Awesome, dude! Thumbs up! Salute
Salute!
Great video. Narration has a very “This American Life” vibe to it!
Beautiful!!
Great work! You're inspiring me and I'm sure many others!!!
Thanks Eric!
Just fantastic! Really enjoyed the story as you went, as usual. That is one beautiful cabinet.
Thanks Bruce!
Wow! Really loved this one, the project and the video. Excellent!
This is super rad. Keep doing what you do.
Geeze, you'd think with all those expensive tools a guy would know how to check for square... LOL! Great build, I've been patiently waiting for this to come out for a while now. And like another comment said, and pair of parallelogram speakers to match would be awesome!
I had misplaced my tape measure...and all hell broke loose. :-)
Nice build and beautifully filmed and edited as always. Thanks.
