The training room, the practice floor, and your off days are where the real work is done and Shaq - as he openly admits, was NEVER about that. It's why Pippen NEVER questioned Jordan, Worthy and Scott Never went at Magic, and the other Celtics followed Bird; those guys ate, slept, and sh#t basketball and you were going to have to KILL them to take it from them. Again, Shaq prioritised having fun over being serious about his craft, and that's what it got him. (2) Phil, as the "old sage", had the perfect situation in Chicago as he had an Alpha Dog who always set the tone AND was charismatic, so all he had to do was manage egos and strategize. In LA, after the first Championship, he has a "charismatic leader" - Shaq - who has poor work habits, and a "workhorse leader" - Kobe - who is socially awkward, and he , in my opinion, never figured it out. In fact, I think he took the easy way out, by making Kobe his whipping boy - like he did with Pippen - but that didn't go over well; I would say that he made the situation worse. I think that the ultimate solution was to trade Shaq after they lost in 2003 - who was the primary reason they lost to the Spurs - and properly build around Kobe, but they weren't going to do that. Phil improperly handled two Alpha Personalities : Shaq needed to get his ass in shape but Phil wasn't going to bash him because he was sensitive, and Kobe needed to become a different kind of leader, but Phil botched that as well. (3) "Young Gun" Kobe's main issue was that he didn't play well with others and was a perfectionist. The only world that existed for him was the gym, and nothing else, as plenty of his contemporaries have said. A lot of his issues were "environmental" as he didn't grow up in the same social atmosphere as a lot of his peers. The closest player to him would probably be Grant Hill, as he came from a privileged family, went to private schools, and attended Duke. Kobe grew up in privilege, lived in Italy for many years, went to school in the suburbs, but never got "socialized", like Grant did, in college - he never had his adaptation phase, he never had to deal with "reality". That bubble burst with the Colorado rape trial, and suddenly, he's no longer America's Golden Child, and his team is mediocre. It isn't until Phil - to his credit - returns and a team builds around him that he has to organically grow with. He's still a bit of an Ass, but not to the extent that he was earlier in his career. I do give him more of a break because he was the youngest of the three, and he didn't know better to know better. Also, as a side note, I will always BASH the Lakers for this : they NEVER got the right wing man for Kobe who could take the ballhandling responsibilities off of him so he could pace himself.
