    I'm sitting here hand-stitching a summer dress and realizing I could have just taken the fabric, pinned it at my shoulders, and worn it with a belt and it would have been just as cute...

    I am consistently impressed with what can be done with a rectangle of cloth. These chiton look quite elegant, and it's just a rectangle draped, folded, and pinned. The sari of India and the pareo from the Pacific islands, and this probably before either of those... it's all really amazing.

    • @sreelekhasen7969
      @sreelekhasen7969 8 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      the sari from India is a very ancient clothing and is not after these clothes. We can say they are contemporary or much older than these. Even today sari India's national dress.

      For all we know Neanderthal Man might have worn a form of drapery. But yeah, Greek and Indian seem to be the oldest forms still in existence.

    I'm glad you checked :) Hoplites (soldiers) provided their own armor. Equipment was not standardized, but often passed down from father to son. They wore knee-length chitons. Poor hoplites wore no armor at all. Better equipped hoplites wore a linothorax, made of stitched or glued linen, leather and/or fur. Generals wore the muscle armor you might be familiar with, which was called a panoply. Other standards were a helmet, shield (aspis or hoplon), spear (doru), and short sword (xiphos).

    I may be wrong but I think that in a book of robert flacelière it's written that it wasn't acceptable even for men to wear a himation without something under it, as they would be perceived as mad, the only exception being philosophers for some reason

    Thanks for being so hands-on and clear.
    When I have tried to google ancient Greek dress, the illustrations have been
    at best a photo of a sculpture, at worst a photo of a pot decoration,
    and the terms have sometimes been contradictory from place to place.
    I wonder what the women wore under. (Especially, and I am asking
    for a...friend, what big breasted women wore to manage their...friends.)

    Khaire Elani Temperance! Eirene kai Hygeia! Thank you a lot for your website and TH-cam channel, specially this video about how to dress peplos and chitons, and I´m sure for the others videos I still had no opportunity to watch. For a long time I want to have my own chiton, but I didn´t know how to dress it. I still don´t know about the size of the rectangular cloth, height and width, could you tell more about it? How to prepare and measure the size of cloth? of a chiton?

    So, is the first one worn under the second one? If not, what is worn under the second example? I know more about what the Romans wore than the Greeks, and I have to dress as Calypso for a JCL convention this summer, and I'm not sure I'm comfortable with the whole right side of my body being leftexposed, like in the first example.

    It is correct that for the men's version of the doric chiton, it only comes to the knees?

    • @ElaniTemperance
      @ElaniTemperance  8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      That depended on a couple of factors. A woman's chiton would always be worn at ankle length. Men wore the long chiton during the Archaic period, but later wore it at knee length, except for certain occupations such as priests and charioteers, and also the elderly. They wore it long even later on.

  • @ElaniTemperance
    @ElaniTemperance  11 ปีที่แล้ว

    Because I tend to have to repin it anyway. Usually, I take the time to pin it right the first time. If I am preparing for a multiple-day even will keep the pins in, though.
