The original Buena Vista Social Club album was recorded for World Circuit Records over six days at the vintage EGREM studios in Havana. Released in 1997, the album went on to become a worldwide phenomenon, selling over 8 million copies and contributing to the rise in popularity of Cuban, as well as Latin American, music.
Since forming in London in the mid-1980s, World Circuit Records has made its reputation by producing some of the finest albums of the past three decades. The label’s prestigious roster includes Buena Vista Social Club and associated solo artists (including Ibrahim Ferrer, Rubén González, Omara Portuondo and Orlando ‘Cachaíto’ López), Malian blues pioneer Ali Farka Touré, Malian divas and social activists Oumou Sangaré and Fatoumata Diawara, master kora player Toumani Diabaté, the illustrious Orchestra Baobab, musical iconoclast Cheikh Lô, and Fela Kuti’s legendary drummer and co-creator of Afrobeat Tony Allen.
With reissues and brand new releases coming soon, World Circuit continues to bring diverse, genre-defying music to a wider audience.

LYRICS
(Spanish)
De Alto Cedro voy para Marcané
Luego a Cueto voy para Mayarí.
El cariño que te tengo
Yo no lo puedo negar
Se me sale la babita
Yo no lo puedo evitar.
Cuando Juanica y Chan Chan
En el mar cernían arena
Como sacudía el ‘jibe’
A Chan Chan le daba pena.
Limpia el camino de paja
Que yo me quiero sentar
En aquel tronco que veo
Y así no puedo llegar.
De Alto Cedro voy para Marcané
Luego a Cueto voy para Mayarí.
(English)
I’m going from Alto Cedro
to Marcané
Then from Cueto, I’m going
to Mayarí.
The love I have for you I cannot deny
My mouth is watering
I just can’t help myself.
When Juanika and Chan Chan
Sifted sand together on the beach
How her bottom shook and
Chan Chan was aroused!
Clean the dry sugar cane
leaves from the path
So I can get to that trunk
I want to sit down.
I’m going from Alto Cedro
to Marcané
Then from Cueto, I’m going
to Mayarí.

I lost my documents in Mexico when I was 21 and couldn’t get back to United States for few days. I remember sitting in a hotel balcony in Puerto Vallarta staring at the sunset and this song was playing on the radio. Although I was stressed about my situation I thought to myself “life is beautiful indeed”....
Haha cool story

I heard this song once but didn't know its name. You have no idea how crazy it drove me. All I could remember were the guitars pieces and what sounds like bongos. No lyrics, no video but pain. It played nonstop inside my head until now.....
Now.....I'm free.
Fly, friend.. fly free.
Same thing happened to me. It just popped one moment and tortured me the whole day. Fortunately, I could hum the melody and Google helped. I too feel free now.
@Marc Reiter lucky you
SAME. I always heard this on people's radios, in the background of restaurants, etc. and could never get the name.

Everytime my father was expecting guests this music was playing all around the house. Instant mood to prepare a party. My father died in 2013 and has been an example how to enjoy life to the fullest. I miss him everyday. I love how this album brings back so much memories of him.
Music is magic !!! you can travel in time!!!
The souls will return with quantum wormholes!!!! probably near when the singularity happens in 7 years :P
Yo, my dad died in 2012 and im forever thankful to him for showing me this track. Lets pass it on to the young and keep it alive, even if you dont have children yourself, this is worth sharing. big love.
Beautiful and sounds like top notch father!

Dear 'Chan Chan', I have known you for many years now. I have danced with you, on my own, & with strangers, & with loved ones too, some now gone. I have played you, sang you & even performed you a handful of times. You are one of my song-friends. A piece of music that has grown with me over the years, & collected memories. I don't often listen to you, but when I do, it is always with an intention. A homecoming within myself. A moment of nostalgia. A need for a good cry. A soft solitary dance. And you are always there, welcoming me back, every time. Thank you.
Maybe it’s time for another dance, x

During a business trip to Havana I went out to dinner in the beautifully restored part of the old city...as I ate a group of musicians came along...and asked what Id like to hear..the album had just come out and I said Chan Chan...they smiled and for the next 30 minutes played the album and more....man Id love to relive that night.
@Perry Cloete Dang ! I hope you gave them a big fat tip, I know I would have.

This was my father's favourite song, and we used to listen Buena Vista in those happy times when we were together. Today (22.02.2022) is a second anniversary of my father's death, and I am listening this song in his honour. I miss you, and I want you to know that everything I am today is all because of you.

To me this is definitely one the best song ever written. Everything is perfect, vocals, guitars, emotions. Compay Segundo and Eliades Ochoa voices sounds like paradise
Yes it is, I like Eliades Ochoa too.
This is one of my mother's favorite songs. She turns 60 today and keep singing it. With a broken spanish. She has a beautiful voice and likes the melody a lot.
When I was 17, i left my little countryside for a few days in the beautiful city of Bordeaux, France, where I live now. I went out to a cuban bar with my friend, and after, at 3am, we met this group of musicians from Argentine. There was Andrés, the guy who was playing guitar, Luna, the dancer with the red dress... And when we arrived, they were playing and singing this song in the night, chilling next to the Place de la Bourse. Among all the songs they could have played. They chose this one. I started dancing a bit with Luna, and then we enjoyed the music and drank red wine.
It was one of the most beautiful nights in my life.
Keep memories awake through the music, guys.

It took me 40 years of living to finally appreciate the richness and depth of Cuban music. This song wraps itself around me, I want to succomb to its charm. This is a masterpiece whose balance and harmony will be enjoyed by many for centuries to come. What's the value of music? It is God's gift to humanity.
It's my favorite Cuban song, a masterpiece. The feeling it gives is indescribable
My Abuelita was from Cuba. She was the great grandmother to my sons. I learned most of my horrible Spanish from her. She had a terrible time in Cuba. She had to give up her daughter when she was only 6 years old during “ Operation Pedro Pan”. Her husband was tortured and killed, she was imprisoned. She had a perpetual sadness in her eyes but she was very proud and strong. I love that woman and I’m glad her blood flows in my son’s veins.

Totally spot on. I was picturing a room with somewhat low ceiling and wood-paneled walls, never stopped to think why I was picturing that.
jeremy segal I always picture like a dancing saloon. Picture frames and paintings on the walls, old and young couples dancing. All this while the sun rays shines through the open windows hitting all the little particles in the air which makes everything feel like time slowed down.
Having been to Cuba I can imagine this in somewhere like the Hotel Seville or a music hall and as said people old and young dancing, the country now has a faded grandeur about it, a beautiful country, the people the music the food, the cigars and rum (my personal favourites) I would go back in a heart beat, this time I'd want a motorbike to ride though so I can go out and explore on my own and not just go on organised trips the more touristy bits.

Cuando es buena, la MUSICA NO TIENE FRONTERAS
I'm an American in my 50s. I first heard Cuban music from a cd called Conga to Cuba. I'm in love. I feel like this is the world's music I don't care where you're from this music will move you.
I first heard this song when I was sitting in a small hidden park on the island of the river La Seine in Paris. This small park is located between the two river branches and at the end of the island is a very old willow tree which leaves its branches trailing in the water. Under the willow tree, protected by the leaves, a man was sitting still looking to the horizon listening to this song playing outloud on his phone. I passed by and ended up sitting right behind him for the entire song, and I remember thinking that life had never seem that peaceful before.
A lovely red headed woman invited me to their show, at the last minute, in Milwaukee. We were taken by the beautiful sounds and the people on the stage, it was like the music was sent from Heaven. We drank, danced and cried at the beauty of the amazing sounds. I believe it was the last show they ever did. It's one night I will NEVER forget.

There are lots of great songs where you have someone thinking about sex, sunshine, or yearning for a loved one, but this one has a basic purity, simplicity and honesty that's really primal, a moment of lustful yearning frozen in time, or an old colour photograph.
There's something about the idea of a journey to re-connect with a magical moment that has an eternal vibe about it (even if one suspects the singer is only dreaming about making the journey).

I'm obsessed with this song learning how to play bass guitar. My daddy would be so proud all the way from San Salvador. RIP pops
Orgulloso de mi cultura y de mi origen LatinoAmericano...nacido en Uruguay con toda la honra de este mundo, y Uruguayo hasta los huesos y hasta la muerte...
I had heard this track once on the radio, and sought out the name of the artists & title. When I found what I needed, I purchased the CD, and played it constantly.
It is one of maybe 4 albums that I listened to, with the player set on 🔃. For months at a time.
And I have searched for each of those albums online, and have gathered what I can, just so I can listen.
I'm almost selfish about it.. I don't tell people why I love the music that I do, those songs just touch my heart & my soul.
Hahaha I perfectly understand you.
I don't understand a single word, but I absolutely love it.
It's about differents town in Cuba: Alto Cedro, Cueto,Mayari and Macaney. Really small town. Not too much there but Compay Segundo love it because he came from these places.
@@sandysandor1699 wow, thanks for that! Really beautiful.
You don’t have to understand, you have to feel :)
This song takes me back to a very special time in my life. An evening that will never be forgotten. It’s a song of deep emotional beauty. It will forever live. I promise.
First heard this song in a small cafe in Las Terranas, far away from the tourist resorts. I had just met this incredible Spanish woman and we decided to take an impromptu 3 week trip to the Dominican Republic. We made awesome memories exploring the jungles, isolated beaches, and the people. When I heard this song I immediately loved it and at that moment realized I loved this woman deeply. It always takes me back to a good place. Now she's my wife.
Bravo Señior 👏🎉 I wish you all the best 💙
Love from Kurdistan ❤️🔥
This song right here, I feel it all through my soul! just amazing.
Thank you Grandad for marrying my black African American Grandma! Cuba is in my heart forever!
Mi disco favorito de todos los tiempos, una representación de la música Cubana.
Yo por las clases xd
Had the pleasure of seeing them in person. Not a single person was sitting, they were on their feet.
