No tech worth his weight in salt will criticize you for cutting apart a tube sheet to fix a coil. I hacked a 20 year old condenser coil apart on a 15 ton Lennox once dead center of the coil to get the thing running. It literally has a gaping hole in the coil. The piece of shit is alive and the customer is happy.

I'm not an A/C guy, but I love to watch your videos for the problem solving. Yesterday, I used what I learned to figure out what was wrong with one of our industrial A/C units a day after it was serviced. They replaced one of the two cooling fan motors, but wired it up backwards! The unit stopped pulling air through the condensor and instead just cycled it in with one fan and out with the other. I blocked the backwards fan grate with a piece of cardboard and our office immediately cooled off while we waited for them to come back. Even my maintenance guys were impressed! Thanks for helping me look like a hero!

Just watch out with the VFD since it might actually be ranging to higher frequencies than 60Hz so if you use a contactor directly and bypass the VFD you might need to check the gearing ratio between motor and fan. One point with the VFD is energy saving, but it can also be used to create higher airflow than normal to speed up cooling. Just check that first and also make sure that if it's there it's not trying to impose a too high rpm on the motor - maybe someone overrode that limit and that's why the fuses blew.

Gearing ratio? Im just wondering, how? Isnt the vfd compressor just a scroll? If you are direct feeding 60hz 208 to 230v wouldnt it just run like a normal compressor? If the blower is also on a drive couldnt you just run it to match the compressor on like lets say high speed for cooling?

Those Carrier VFD's are in the worst possible spot.
Many VFD manufacturers don't want a VFD to be in an area with over 50% realative humidity.
Putting the VFD downstream of the coil theoretically exposes to 100% RH air.

Such a large leak at that joint. Would that indicate they didn't have a complete braze at the joint? And wouldn't that joint need to be cleaned up a bit by removing the Male end of the joint? Fan setting on spray bottle can be used for pin holes that are forceful because if you basically mist the air that pin hole will push the mist. However it will be too forceful for the bubble to form over it. You can also spray it in the air to show forcefulness of flow for vents and fans. It can also show you the direction of the flow of the air to see if it is flowing smoothly. Just some old school tricks for you.

Got a love that condenser repair. I’m sure it saved a bundle of dough for the customer. Reminds me of a similar repair job I did probably 40 years ago. It was heat exchanger for a big Gardner Denver air compressor. The oil to air cooler had a leaking tube. This was a monster radiator at least 300 lbs and had steel “tanks”. So after identifying the tube that was leaking, we cut a 2x2 hole on each tank to be able to reach in and braze up the ends of the leaking tube. Then welded up the holes. This saved the customer about $3000.00.
I love watching you think through the problems and coming up with reasonable solutions.

I know you just got the fieldpiece but... So far, wich Micron gauge was the more reliable or the one that lasted you the most ?

You know you keep talking here and there about microns and micron gauge but you don't say microns of what. Are you reading microns of water column or pascals or what?

I've bought those fuses at Home Depot before. Yes you're right, they are stupid expensive, but if you need some quick I think there's HDs everywhere.

6:00 you can see the burnt on top of the vfd usually they will fail and that's a tell tale you should see when the big 45 Amp 480v ones fail

11:12 Once I had a call to a customer that had a huge industrial drier for wood in a big room with piles of wood planks up to the roof and it was determined that there was a leak in it but 2 other firms before had not found the leak. The humidity in the room was 99% and I'm not kidding you there was a light fog in there and close to 110 F. The condenser, that I suspected beyond anything, was as big as if you unfold the both condensers on this, on the video, carrier unit and then put 3 on top on each other, then you know the size of that condenser it was insanely huger, not fine finned though but quite tight anyway. I shut of everything in the room and started to listen and after only 5 min I found the area where the leak. The other guys was old ppl that couldn't hear, I was young. The condenser was around 8 inch thick and the closest tube was several inch down a bit far and close to one end of the condenser. I needed to use a hacksaw to get even close and needed to cut away quite much. But I pinpointed the leak, typical corrosion, brazed it filled with gas and it worked perfectly and owner was very happy.
