    True baroque interpretation of the piece! A very baroque setting too, in a church like this.

      What makes this recording more of a baroque interpretation compared to other pieces?

    I am so used to hearing this with vibrato. Thank you very much. You brought tears to my eyes without even vibrating.

    Beautiful. I prefer the typical style as opposed to Baroque, but this is actually one of my favorite recordings of the Chaconne.

    Amazingly beautiful. It just baffles me 1. how someone can play something like this and 2. read the music to do it so flawlessly.

    Some of you have asked about recordings. I'm happy to announce the release (Sono Luminus March 25, 2014) of a landmark recording of all 12 Sonatas for Two Violins by Jean-Marie Leclair, available for the first time as a complete set and in high-definition on PureAudio Blu-ray. It's a baroque violin tuned to A=415 Hz and he is using a baroque bow which is typically a few inches shorter (depending on when in the Baroque period) than a modern bow.

  • @bbbartolo

    absolutely glorious, and not in need of vibrato at all, even to my modern ear. unlike with the cello suites, a baroque performance of the violin sonatas and partitas is hard to find on CD. can anyone recommend one?

    • @AnHebrewChild
      @AnHebrewChild 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I've been enjoying Amandine Beyer's sonatas and partitas since I came across it on here. The recording quality is remarkable, even played through youtube. th-cam.com/video/aZEBGRh59H0/w-d-xo.html So I'll definitely be picking up a CD of it...
      enjoy

      @@ronkalinovsky6898 Thanks. I since discovered James Ehnes, who as I recall doesn't plays on a Baroque violin but performs in a modified Baroque style. I'm very happy with his CDs.

    You and Rachel Podger have inspired me early on to pursue true baroque violin. It's so beautiful and simplistic. I recently switched back from my gut strings tuned at 415 to some 440 tuned Evah Pirazzis for solo work, and I miss them incredibly. The response is better, but they aren't as full and deep. How did you get used to playing without a rest? It's almost painful for me. Thanks for a wonderful performance!

    • @45thparallelfiddler
      @45thparallelfiddler  11 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Duncan - when I learned how to support the violin with my left hand (even while shifting) rather than squeeze the violin with my chin, it became much easier to play without a chinrest. When a lot of shifting is required I do still find myself stabilizing the violin with my chin, but I try to limit it to a momentary action. Try practicing for a week without using your chin at all...if you can stand it ;-) And thanks...btw.

    Although this is not the best version I've ever heard, I do apreciate that he plays on a baroque violin. I would say: either a bit more baroque or more emotion, you shoult not forget that Bach wrote this piece after his first wife died, so try to keep that in your mind while you're playing.

  • @keithosmarferrer
    @keithosmarferrer 12 ปีที่แล้ว

    originally for baroque, the notes that is played with 3 stops or 4 on the sheet should be played all connected, not simultaneously played double stops and then another double stop to have 4 stops...it's only played like that when using a modern setup, the 3 or 4 strings should be played all at one time...that's why baroque bows are like that, and baroque bridges should be flatter, yer bridge is not of a baroque, that's why you can't play 3 or 4 strings at a time.

  • @alessandrovaccari782
    @alessandrovaccari782 9 ปีที่แล้ว

    is it possible to combine the baroque approach (and instrument setup too) with Szeryng's revision?

  • @CRS1952
    @CRS1952 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    This bowing and tone production style is quite different from your modern style (which I have heard). Are there treatises on the style that one could refer to? It is clear to me that it is not an inevitable function of the instrument, strings or bow. It is clearly an aesthetic choice. I am interested in how it has been established that this is the authentic sound of the baroque.

  • @IndelibleBeings
    @IndelibleBeings 10 ปีที่แล้ว

    I liked it.
    Nice location too.
    Have you noticed much difference in playing this "baroque" style vs. more modern? I'm assuming you trained on classical/modern and developed this skill. I'm asking because I noticed some fingering choices that support needing to use the left in a different way (for me, I'm reduced to concentrating on the challenge of what I'm doing with my bow more than anything else).

  • @timefortea1931
    @timefortea1931 10 ปีที่แล้ว

    Very well played- I like the sound of this violin over the modern one- sometimes modern ones can be shrill- this is not.

    • @jackhousman6637
      @jackhousman6637 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's partially due to the fact that the E string on the baroque instrument is gut, while that on the "modern" (circa 1870 or so) is steel wire.

  • @keithosmarferrer
    @keithosmarferrer 12 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    baroque violins don't use chinrests

  • @keithosmarferrer
    @keithosmarferrer 12 ปีที่แล้ว

    not a complete baroque violin, the tailpiece and the bridge is for modern, the attachment of the neck to the body is not of baroque, and the neck and fingerboard is longer and thinner than a baroque...but as it is played with a baroque bow, without a chinrest(he should had also removed the shoulderrest), and the catgut(i dunno if that was a catgut), it still can function like a baroque :)

  • @aepceo1
    @aepceo1 13 ปีที่แล้ว

    Ouch, no chin rest? But I'm pretty sure I see one there...

  • @jonathanvalk726

    • @jonathanvalk726
      @jonathanvalk726 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The chaconne is beautifull, I know how hard it is to play, but I would like to hear something the spirit of a dance in especially the gigue.

  • @adamdegraff
    @adamdegraff 13 ปีที่แล้ว +1
