Did Trump Defeat Canada and Mexico?

- With the arrival of February, the great American emperor, Donald Trump, prepared the commercial cannons and opened fire: he announced a hefty 25% tariff on all products-except energy-from his two neighbors, Mexico and Canada, and a 10% tariff on all imports from China.
This announcement triggered a political tsunami that ultimately worsened relations with Canada and Mexico. Why? We'll tell you.

Mexico: we'll put 10k troops on the border
Also Mexico: Already has 15k on the border
I actually served on the border and worked alongside Mexican federal forces and their hands are usually tied. Those numbers barely even keep the peace in some sectors.
The main concession the U.S. wanted out of Mexico was to for Mexico to stop allowing immigrant caravans from being escorted to the U.S. border.
Every once in awhile the Mexican Federal forces would put on a show of force in front of the border and break up a caravan, but they allow camps of literally ten thousand+ illegals to set up just South of the Rio Grande.
So we get 25k Mexican troops watching the southern border without any cost to Americans? Sounds like a win

I would not put much weight on what was said to be agreed today but await to see what changes happen in one month .
I think that's an important point. Still, these people came into Canada legally at airports with passports and visas. I'm sure they do the same in the US, just like all the 9/11 hijackers did. I'd like for both our countries to have higher standards for frisking newcomers, really. But how possible is that?
Also, can you imagine how many security threats came in through the wide-open border with Mexico _among the total of 10-million-plus?_
@ the people coming in legally I think will be the point. People on the watchlist are not allowed in the US so if they arrive to immigration they are immediately sent back. They cross the border illegally from either Mexico or Canada. I suspect that a month from now we may see that Mexico, Canada and the US will link their watch lists so that people on any watch list is not allowed in any of the three countries. But will see.

Trump is a negotiator, a business man. At least that is how he likes to see himself. “The Art of the Deal” is a book he put his name on. It doesn’t matter whether he wrote the book himself or had a team of ghost writers, he put his name on it which means he believes in it. When he says something is non-negotiable he is lying, mostly to himself. He LOVES negotiating. Everything is negotiable. His comfort zone, his home terf is at the table. He will say whatever he needs to say to get the upper hand in a negotiation including blatant lies and claiming that nothing is negotiable. But, make no mistake his ultimate goal is to negotiate. Whether or not he is any good at is in doubt. Other world leaders are probably catching on to this and will use it to their advantage because as long as they can give him anything that he can spin as a victory they can get whatever they want from him.

Canada brushed it off… but Trump didn’t budge on his demand and imposed the tariffs. At the last hour Canada committed on better border controls as Trump request. And this is why the tariffs are suspended to verify Canadian action during these 30 days.
Everything Canada is doing they already announced they would do in December other than appointing a "fentanyl czar". So the damage to the US image and soft power in the world and the tanking of the markets was worth that one (likely useless and ceremonial) position being appointed? No this made him look like a fool to the world and make them more likely to band together to stand up to further bullying. This weakened Trump's position and was a very bad move.

The border with Canada is the largest and safest border on earth. So little fentanyl comes thru that border that it’s statistically insignificant. There is absolutely no reason to nuke Canada/US relationships and the humming US economy to force this peaceful border into a militarized zone.
Only a MAGA nutcase who eats conservative propaganda for breakfast believes otherwise.
You make some good points but you lack the greater picture.
With enough Gov funds to set up a "Fentanyl Tsar" and staff, I'm confident we can DOUBLE the amount of fentanyl seized at the US Border -- from 43lbs to 86lbs.

Don't really agree with the last part, that all the stuff done after is to "hide" the tariff debacle. They've done so much since they took office it's been new stuff every day. The stuff after the tariffs was most likely just continuation of that. Why would the plan have been to do a lot of stuff, then the tariffs and then stop doing stuff.
Action action action, change change change, as much and fast as possible and see what sticks seems to be the tactic. If it doesn't stick, hopefully it's forgotten in 4 years. Which the tariffs themselves is are an indication of.

Smart moves by Trump. Time to in source manufacturing back into America.
Something Biden has been doing the last 4 years without needing to collapse economically with tariffs 😅
You do that by offering incentives for domestic investment, not by making production more expensive! DUH! And BTW, the whole idea that the country needs all this domestic manufacturing is kinda strange--at least from a quality of life perspective for ordinary people. The huge corporations selling the goods are making bank. So the thing to do is tax them appropriately (as opposed to hardly at all). You had companies that were spending their profits on stock buybacks instead of investing in increased production or increasing wages for employees, etc. Republicans since Reagan were DEAD SET AGAINST any sort of tariffs, even in the special cases where they may have made sense. And they happened to be right. Where they are wrong is the entire domestic policy angle, lol, but free trade is GOOD! You tax PROFITS, not BUSINESSES EXPENSES. The goal isn't to create jobs, it is to increase productivity. It would be better just to have the federal government cut checks to the poor and middle class than institute such insane tariffs. Then you raise corporate tax and tax it back in on the other end. You can't just raise corporate tax to infinity, but ours is REALLY low. Absurdly low. Manufacturing isn't good in and of itself. The goal is increased quality of life, not "jobs". There are many ways to get people increased quality of life. The problem is that the entire Republican (and to a lesser extent, many Democrats, too) ideology of "government spending bad (unless military or in favor of corporations)" doesn't allow for that. They spent decades desperately trying to indoctrinate people (since reagan) that government doing anything is bad, and they don't wanna tax their donors, so they had to go with this. They needed someone to blame for economic hardship, so they blamed foreigners. Right-wing populism 101. This is just stupid. What matters is what it is doing.

Oh, like no one saw it coming.
5:41 He is so dumb. Trade deficits mean nothing. They simply mean Americans are buying more stuff from another country than people from that country are buying from Americans.
If you think it’s a problem, then you could say the problem lies with Americans for buying too much.
Why doesn’t tell American consumers to stop buying stuff if he thinks these deficits are a problem.
Exactly. And how could Canada or Mexico even buy more from the US than the US buys? The US has a much bigger population and far more wealth per capita. Plus, many US products are overpriced/overhyped junk like Oreo’s, Coca-Cola, McDonalds, Nike shoes - the list goes on.
China has a bigger population, but much less wealth per capita, and they run a trade surplus with virtually every country due to being the factory of the world (a position that they’ve held on-and-off for essentially hundreds of years - most of the gold plundered from the new world was spent in China on silks, porcelain, etc).
Ultimately trade deficit doesn’t really matter. Identifying unfair business practices, like China’s massive subsidizing of certain industries, is a good reason for targeted tariffs to protect and encourage domestic manufacturing.
@@wayward-saint Exactly. An economist would point out that we all run huge trade deficits with our supermarkets. It means nothing except that we can afford our groceries.

How you explained his lost, it seems like a calculated bet. If he won with the tariff and the other 2 countries made concessions, he'll win big; if not, he'll just take the tariff off the table and doesn't lose much.
1) Imposing huge taxes on your own companies and citizens is not a win.
2) Trump severely damaged the reputation of the United States for no good reason. You can't trust Donald to follow his own deal (CUSMA) - No point in engaging with his administration
3) U.S. businesses have lost billions, contracts ripped in Mexico and particularly Canada. Now, there is a general movement to reduce U.S. purchases to derisk trade being weaponized in the future.
No it actually weakened him and showed the rest of the world that he's a fool and also weak and will back down when stood up to. This will give the rest of the world a stronger backbone to stand up against him in the future... first rule of being a bully is not to bully someone who will punch you back. @@aruak321 yeah, I can see that. I can see how most European can follow Canada and Mexico and push back because they aren't as reliant on USA military support or foreign aid.

VisualPolitik is right in saying Mexico has promised before to change but failed to actually change anything and so have the Trudeau Liberals, but this time it's different - they will both acquiesce because Trump is serious and Canada and Mexico know it.
Exactly this channel has gotten so anti trump. Alot of misinformation here. They use to play both sides but clearly not now
@@SIMSNYC When has this channel been pro trump at all? It has always been anti trump
@@dean_l33 not saying pro trump but more center then it is now. Now its a everything trump does is bad channel
What's different this time? Mexico sending 5000 less troops lol?
This channel looks dumb when Trump got everything he wanted from them!😂😂
Nothing will happened except chaos like Feb.3/25
One thing is certain, you guys will have tons of work during Trump's tenure.
Yeah, trudeau sucks but god damn, did he do a good job this time
I was at Walmart today (didn't stop to think that it's American), complete ghost town, it was eerie, like i was back in covid times. People here are offended as hell and shocked our best friends would bully us like this and slander us. Had we had adequate time to prepare for tariffs we really wouldn't care but the US would lose access to things it needs as it'd make more sense for Canada to sell to other markets and build the infrastructure to do so. As our alleged ally, the US should have allowed us to prepare, not shake us down for cash because they know we have no other currently accessible markets to move our exports to. Even if the tariffs do not materialize, you'll be shocked to see how poorly US companies are doing here next quarter, purchases with alternatives will take 70% loss in market share (based on my own speculation and barometer on Canadian collective pissed-offedness) The damage is done and Americans will feel this unfortunately
Some of us value mutual respect, courtesy, and cooperation. All I ask is that you remain mindful of this, and don't look at us as if we have one group mind or something. Trump's electoral victory was just a little too narrow to infer that, to say the least. There are millions of Americans who are mortified that this is how the current administration (well, I should say 'regime', as they don't seem to be too interested in actual administration). I know we're gonna feel it. And, of course, it's gonna hit the people least able to deal with it the most. I can't imagine there is one credible economist who would endorse this. Economists have known how counterproductive tariffs are for hundreds of years before there even was such a thing as an "economist". Frankly, I think Trump and his allies simply want to wage war on the established order. They simply want citizens to suffer.
Trump went against trudeau not to the canadians...a big difference..you have a horrible government a stupid in power a dictator against free speech...or you dont remember how he went agains YOUR TRUCK DRIVERS????? DO NOT FORGET
@@bsadewitz Canadians understand that, unfortunately we have limited ways to respond so a broad boycott is pretty much the only option. i intend to stop the boycott when the orange boy is gone, i do think others will develop shopping habits that will be hard to change though, it's a lot of effort to find alternatives if you dont intend to use them for a long time
@@dylanm4339 Today someone from Quebec said that he was GLAD they are making deals with China instead of the US. That is the sort of antipathy I was referring to. I completely understand your position, and, indeed, wouldn't expect you to do anything else. It is the appropriate response.
And it puzzles me even more that they are announcing this in the comments section of a channel which specifically caters to people who dislike Trump. Why not go to a Trump channel and tell them! And of course, it had hundreds of "likes". This disturbs me, as these are the people who constitute most of the "left" in America. Hating one's own country and elevating others isn't leftist! Leftism is about class solidarity and egalitarianism. It doesn't matter whether the target of the hatred is foreign or domestic! Really, that's just another branch on the same tree that Trumpism is on. One should hate people based on what they do, not their nationality.
Can someone please introduce the Republican president to Milton Friedman?
Actually is the land of Mexicas, Aztecs was a term created by a german dude named Alexander von Humboldt.
I’m not your friend Justin.
This host is an idiot. We Canadians need to fix our country and that starts with serious border control, not just talk about it.
@clynng5536 You do know it is one of the longest border in the World.... it will take a huge sum to have serious border control. that is why Canada and US (during Biden) agreed to strengthen the border together, Trump is just trying to steal the deal...as something he did, even though the plans were in place since Dec. All countries need to be fixed, because times change and different priorities are needed.
@@tonespeaksI never liked that side of Trump, coming in at the last second changing a comma to a point then claiming responsibility for the whole deal.
Yes..Far too many guns and drugs come from America into Canada. I hope the new border czar can get right on that problem.
To protect against americans? It's really weird US/Canada complaining to each other about not protecting one anothers borders when it's the only border canada has.
@@gonnaga9302 Canada has more than 1 border.
You’re judging the result of the negotiations before they’ve even happened..?
🇨🇦 Canada 1st
he has caused irreparable damage to the reputation of the USA and moved the USA closer to isolation and decline. All in just 2 weeks, well done!
I don't understand how 3 countries with an FTA, should ever be even threatened with tariffs in the first place. What's the use of FTA then? What's the use of agreements or MoU then? Even if you are getting things done with tariff threats, this is only making other allies look forward beyond the US. What will happen even if the US gets the manufacturing back, no one other than the people of the US will consume that because the dollar's becoming extremely strong, and other currencies are tanking because of the repeated threats. And 25% on immediate neighbours and allies, but 10% on an enemy. I'm shocked that people aren't asking this basic question to him.
Plus the trade treaty in place is Trump's very own. In 2017 he demanded terms which he subsequently got, immediately declaring a total victory. Now he calls them unfair.🙄
Simple, you never open negotiations with what your goals are. start with asking for a lot more, settle for what you actually want, the other side thinks they got something out of it. Trump has said from day 1 he likes to use tarriffs as a negotiating stick when the carrot fails. His goal was to stop illegals and drugs flooding into the country and got both neighbours to do something about it
I don't ask my neighbour to lock my door when I go to bed at night.
No, his goal was to have some inane right-populist MAGA talking point to run on. If he ever believed in it, that's even worse. What LEAVES Canada is not Canada's responsibility. Countries are responsible for their own borders. It's that all of his other border stupidity failed. He sabotaged a bipartisan border security bill that Sen. Lankford (R) did an excellent job negotiating. Christ, talk about a slap in the face. There were all sorts of Republican priorities in there that the Democrats caved on. But Trump wanted to run on the border being insecure, so he said "NO, NOT WHILE THE DEMOCRATS ARE IN POWER!@#".
What we already agreed to do end of last year before trump to office .
@@davidbruce6414yeah now you actually have to follow through though not just talk. Or else those tariffs will collapse your economy

In 20 years, you'll thank Trump. For those that don't know, the US gov't don't plan for a better tomorrow. They plan for a better future (20 years). They have 20 year out look.
Justine got schooled....
Go Trump go....
