  • Mount Merapi, located in Indonesia, stands as one of the world's most active volcanoes, posing a persistent threat to the surrounding region inhabited by millions. Its eruptions, fueled by interactions between magma and groundwater, exemplify the unpredictable nature of volcanic activity, necessitating vigilant monitoring and preparedness efforts to mitigate potential disasters.

I live in the North Island of New Zealand. That's more than half of our country's population on that island. We have a few active volcanoes, too. We also have a large caldera called Lake Taupo. It sits in the middle of the island. From satellite views, you can see that the entire North Island is one massive super volcano.

I was raised in Auckland, which is literally an active volcanic field... White Island (Whakaari) to Ruapehu is perfectly aligned with the active subduction zone. Rotorua is perfectly placed in a very weak spot in the crust. This line goes all the way through Wellington City. I now live close to the Southern Alps. There is no longer any activity here as the plates rub against each other rather than go under. Akaroa and Dunedin were Volcanic and make sense if the plate went under.

And yet every report seems to indicate that for most catastrophic scenarios, including super volcanoes going off in other parts of the world (notably the USA and Italy), New Zealand is the place to be for holding your end-of-the-world party. All the richie-riches and broligarchs of the world have fall-out shelters on the South Island but now that you've reminded me there's a ticking time bomb on their doorstep too, pretty sure I'll sleep more soundly.

Makes me feel quite lucky, surprisingly, to live in california, we're wildfires are the number one type of disaster that happened. People not from here think that earthquakes are the number one here, but not at all. The last major earthquake I've ever felt was 1989. Wildfires or fires in general are the only containable type of disaster / natural disaster that I can think of. All others, everyone has to just wait till it's done to start the cleanup and damage control. Never realized how lucky I was living in a fire prone area instead of anywhere else that we could live where yearly or decade level disasters are common

Yea Japan is one of the last countries you want to experience an emergency or need aid after a traumatic event in. Just ask all those passengers who survived an airplane crash and were minutes from being rescued by American Marines, but because the crash was in Japan they felt they were perfectly capable of carrying out the rescue, so they refused to let the Marines land and render aid, the Japanese crews didn't show up until 18 hours later cuz they wrote everyone off as dead only they found 3 people still alive with horrible tales of listening to survivors die in the night waiting for rescue. Moral of the story...DO NOT NEED HELP IN JAPAN!

Most often the sirens go off and people are told to evacuate, they do and nothing happens EXCEPT someone took advantage of their absence and robbed them blind. Villagers have come to believe that most often the sirens amount to nothing, and would rather stay and defend their crop and possession than come home to nothing.
Either way they die... someone steals everything you have and you starve to death slowly...
Or you stay and get killed quickly by the destructive flow coming down the hill
If it's a false alarm and being at home protects your property and secures your family lives another year, than it's a good day.
We westerners need to stop judging the third world by our first world standards.
If this was a first world nation we would have insurance on our property, we would have friends and family to take us in or in the very least a social safety net for unseen expenses or relocating costs. We are viewing their reactions through the peephole of our first world experience and standards.

The soil around volcanoes is extremely fertile. Agriculturalists will flock there. The property values are high due to the beautiful views. People may be foolish to live there and return, but you have to have a place to live.
Look at the Mississippi or Nile deltas. Yearly floods, disease, and uncomfortable climate yet people still live there. Humans accommodate themselves to their surroundings.

If only all of the potential energy of earths volcanoes could be tapped to release the "dangerously built up pressure" that, if tapped properly, could be saferly releasing the dangerous pressures through an impeller, to turn generators for electricity, for free!
Sea water can not only cause explosive energy releases when brought into contact with magma, but also, with electricity, from the steam driven generator, can we get hydrogen, from the electrolysis of seawater? Then free electricity, and free hydrogen? Maybe?
