I would have loved to be a fly on the wall to know what went on internally at Nikon for the past 5 years since they botched their mirrorless entry back in 2018 to then turn things around starting with the Z9. If they took this approach initially back in 2018 they would have been in a much better position but Nikon's hubris for change is well known.
I've to know behind the scenes as well. Both nikon and Canon have delayed major mirrorless cameras. The R1 for Canon and the Z8 for Nikon. It would have been smarter for Nikon to go with the Z8 first and the Z9 last as there is more demand and more revenue for the Z8 series.
@@OrdinaryFilmmaker The only thing I can think of is that the R&D was way behind for the Z8(smaller body) and they needed something so they decided to use the Z9 as kind of a halo product that wasn't intended for them to really make much $$ at all as it was priced really low but to generate lots of buzz knowing they wouldn't be able to fulfill demand for a long time with production.
Hey Simon, I strong suspect the rumoured weight/size is correct. This will be to avoid overheating and align with what D850 shooters are used. The Z6iii/Z7iii bodies will be the ones for people who prioritise weight/size over capabilities. Nikon shooters generally don’t tend be as preoccupied over size as other brands from my observation. The Z8 will hit a sweet spot for many imho.
The R5 isn't a light camera by any means. A body that size can easily manage heat if architected right. To me it's a weight for a larger body like the Z9 or R3. We will know soon enough buddy ;)

when hardware moves lots of data, a lot of heat is generated, to avoid overheating you need good heat sinks, which result in weight - but as you said we should all know on the 10th!
960g for the Z8? That's heavier than a 5D Mark IV! I hope that weight is with battery and media included. The Canon R3 body is only 822g; 1015g with battery and media. It's gonna be a hefty beast.

Sony is the worst for getting leaks even up to the announcement. Nikon starts to leak within a few months, but this camera has a lot of bad leaks. Leaks that should not have gotten published.
Like everyone else, I'm really curious about the Z8. Do I really need these advanced specs compared to my Z7? 8 fps raw works just fine for me as well as 4K videos for the rare time I use those features. Paired with all my Z mount lenses the photo quality is excellent in the 7. I guess wildlife and sports photographers can gain an edge with excessive frame rates, but I shoot weddings, portraits and landscapes, so buying into a camera with a bunch of specs I don't need does not make much sense. I'm still using a D750 along with my Z7 for weddings, with results my clients are happy with. Hopefully the Z7II"s (with its 2 card slots) price will take a nosedive when the Z8 is released, then I may find it worth my while to finally retire my 750.
I heard that some camera shops already have a list of names for pre-orders, so even if you pre-order on 5/10 you will be way down the list. Fortunately this is a camera I don't need unless it has an AI chip like the Sony A7r5.
If I'm not mistaken, the z9 has insect eye detection. Maybe not for all insects. I think a saw a video where they used a macro lens with their z9. If the z9 has it the the z8 will. I hope ask these tracking modes go into all the lower bodies.
I’m perplexed, if we are getting Z8 which is also a mirrorless D850 replacement, it needs to be outstanding. Something that isn’t just a better Z7ii but falling short of a Z9 doesn’t feel right. If the intention is to present the world with a cut-down Z9, it’s going to be, in my view, a major fail. The Z8 should be a professional complementary camera to the Z9 with something the Z9 isn’t really optimised for.
Hi Simon, seems like the Z8 will be heavy indeed and that's no surprise to me. Few weeks ago I commented on one of your many video's I expected it to be close to 1kg (by simply subtracting the weight diff between R3 and R5 from the Z9) and I mentioned it would be close to the R3, and hey, the Z8 is almost 100grams lighter ;-) I assume this is due to the internal thermal system to allow 8k60, and the excellent stabilization (see the latest via of Jan Wegener!) Also the CIPA rating may be correct, even when indeed not realistic. Our R5 is rated at 320 or so .. yet on a day in a bird hide, shooting mostly electronic bursts, I had reached 12800 stills (and some minutes of video) before my first 2 batteries were drained. 20 times better than CIPA, I kid you not 😀
I'm pretty sure the camera to be announced will be the Z8. I am not 100 percent on any of the capabilities other than it will sit well on the shelf with the R5 and a7 R5.
Nikon seemed intent on this being a surprise release, lots of faked photos which may be a combo of different cameras to give us what it really looks like without giving away the leakers. I’m still hoping for 2 or more cameras being launched. 2 more days

Those ‘cleverly’ hidden details are nowhere to be found on Nikon’s website. 🤷♂️ Wishful thinking by Nikonians and rumors to back their wishful thinking? This is gonna be a LOT of money for a random camera. In your heart of hearts, even given the specs, do you think most of us need one rather than learn how to learn and use our existing cameras better. Just not seeing or feeling it.

They did have a lot of issues with sourcing parts... It's been dogging and since 2020.

My D850 is actually lighter than that leaked weight. I think a heavy z8 will really have to earn a place in the carry on bag.

We had the same discussion on the R5 before it was released... for a while, the the heat was a problem, but now, it goes for hours and no overheating.
Obviously, the pending announcement is alluding to a new Z series 8mm fisheye 😉

For local camera stores, yes that's true. But for the big chains, they have an automatic preorder system so you have a chance of getting it quickly.
