Hymer Van S500 motorhome tour

  • This is the Hymer Van S500 motorhome, measuring only 565cm in length. Indeed a large part of the length is taken up by the long nose of the Mercedes base. Nonetheless the inside of the motorhome is very compact with almost everything a fulltimer could want with two noticeable shortfalls - lack of space in the garage for a bike (although there is an external bike rack) and lack of hanging space as the wardrobe is not high enough. The vehicle can be parked anywhere a car can go - as its footprint is roughly the same size as many family cars. A really strong point is the insulation. You can see how cold it was outside in the film, nevertheless I was really warm inside so full marks to Hymer and Truma for that!
    I live in a motorhome full time and travel around Europe in it. I spend most of my time in Poland, Germany and Italy. Vanlife is my life.
    In my TH-cam channel, I present reviews of recreational vehicles. Here you will find campervans and motorhomes from the cheapest camper vans to the most expensive luxury liners, from various companies including Hobby, Hymer, Carthago, Westfalia, Wingamm, La Strada, Frankia, Clever Vans, Pössl, Bürstner, Niesmann Bischoff, Action Mobil, Reisemobil Manufaktur, Robeta, Trigano, Challenger, EuraMobil, Laika, Forster, Mobilvetta Design, Affinity, Globe Traveller, Benimar, Roller Team, Adria, Tourne, Megamobil, VW, Mercedes, CS, Renault, Ford, Fiat, Carado, Sunlight, Baileys, Chausson, Balcamp, Knaus, Weinsberg, Mitsubishi, Woelcke, Reisemobile Bürow and others.
    I do this by regularly attending trade events such as CMT Stuttgart, Abenteuer und Allrad, Caravan Salon Dusseldorf, Warsaw Caravan and Camping Show and sometimes others.
    I cover equipment, including 12v electrical equipment and talk a lot about lithium batteries.
    I also show some of the places I have visited in Europe in my own motorhome, as well as the places you can stay at! I try to give as much coverage as I can to official campsites and free places which I use for overnighting. Therefore you can find here the aire or stellplatz that you are possibly looking for.

    Towels make you slip :P
    Arguably the more I look at this RV the more I think a van conversion is more cost effective and better overall.
    Ducato van conversions to name some: Adria Twin, Possl Roadcamp (also Globecar), Hobby Vantana, Knaus Boxstar, RollerTeam/Chausson/Challenger/Caravans International on the 540/600 cms wave.... they all have something in common.
    I'd trade this RV anytime with any of the above, keep some 10-15K of change to spend on what truly makes it home on wheels: sat-nav, TV set, radio, spare cassettes or macerator w/ aux tank, solar panel, inverter, generator...
    If I were really fussy about the quality I'd go for a Westfalia that for my impressions it's built to a higher standard and still have cash to spend.

    This is nice but best use of space is essential on small vans of this size. I think the Chausson Flash 500 has a better layout with the dropdown bed. I'm not a great fan of drop downs but when you have this sort of limited space a drop down gives so much more living space. And it's a lot cheaper than the Hymer.

    Take off the dinette for a larger bed, bathroom, kitchen or whatever! I never understood the idea wich is behind this concept: smaller the van, more seatings/sleeping space!!

    Is there an AC for summertime in this van? What powers it?

    • @VanlifewithAlan
      @VanlifewithAlan  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      There would be if you install it. It is rare for vans to come with AC except that which is provided by the vehicle manufacturer - in this case Mercedes.

    • @VanlifewithAlan

      As far as I can tell, GoPro has an even narrower angle than the camera I have and furthermore does not have stabilisation. However I could give it a go if you send me one.
