The city of Los Angeles (downtown that is) is located at that particular spot because its where the river first empties out onto the river's flood plain and so drops it major silt load there. It is probably the most fertile soil in all of SoCal. Its kind of a shame that its all paved over now.

I live in Bowness in Calgary Alberta. I love walking down to the Bow river. It is a very majestic river. However, I don't love when the river comes to me as it did in the 2013 flood. That was very stressful for me and my family. I love the Bow when it is tame but hate it when it is in my house.

I was fascinated with the Glendale portion of the L.A. River since I was a kid. Was hoping you'd show the L.A. River 'cats,' cat-like covers of tunnels - probably part of flood-control - that are large iron circles with cat-like ears on the tops of them. I did a painting of that portion of the river back in the 80s.

Way back in around 1972, those 'cat covers' were painted with cartoon-like pictures of cat faces. They were very cool.

DoubleMrE Yes, I remember them! They were all painted differently. They were very cool. I'm sure the paintings are long gone, but are the cat covers gone too?

J Blake Oh good. I wasn't completely sure we were talking about the same thing.
But unfortunately I have no idea if the covers are there anymore. My family moved from LA to Honolulu back in the 70's. ;)
I really liked those things. I guess that's obvious since I still remembered them for all these years.

DoubleMrE Yep, same thing. I've moved away as well. I know they were there in the 80s. That's when I did the painting. I probably took some shots of the cats when I took reference photos to use back in my studio. No idea where those photos are, but I'm sure I still have them.
Just ran a search, and they're still there! This guy paints some or all of them:

J Blake Awesome! Thanks for posting that link. It was cool seeing some of those after all these years. . . . I only remembered seeing the big ones like in the top photo. We would see them across the river from this one street we used to drive down on occasion.
      Anyways, they're still very cool . . . Aloha braddah! ;)

The movie "Them" about giant mutant ants was filmed in one of the main tunnels (Frogtown section) off the Los Angeles River. I'm glad there has been effort made to restore the natural beauty of the river and add some parks along it.

Not only are there a lot of birds down there at the riverbed, if you stay there long enough, you'll run into some pigs.

You should do a piece on the Arts District.
