The story of "raja janak and his dream" told by swami sarvapriyanada before getting into "madukya upanishad" gives you a glimpse.
Unfortunately most of the "Gurus" try to detach OM from Hinduism. Most of the meditation yoga classes I attend they make sure to say this loud and clear so as to accommodate every other religion. Sucks!
The inferiority complex is pretty well embedded in us since long.
Look up vishuddhi films on the history to understand why, OM is not a God in the sky or flying donkeyy religion, don't mistake art for history...OM is meta physical reality that which you see is not real. Only you real. That's turiya. Waves observed become particles, the observer is the real, anything subject to the observer is an illusion/Maya.. this is continued in the current Cosmology, this is philosophical, the books are not rules but centuries worth of debates, nobody was against for being atheist or questioning the truth... those who knew and lived the truth, turned into avatars (realized God), the idea is to realize you are not separate from the God... God is in heaven and the heaven lies within you.. same thing in ✝️
Brahmā satyam jagat mithya
You can intellectually understand it through rig veda or science or ashtavakra but you will never realize it unless you let go of your body and mind and become union with the turiya, that's how yoga came into being, yoga = union.
Once you have realized the truth of your reality, you will have mastered your senses and emotions.. since you know you are not your thoughts or the mind and others are you and you are others, which is one, bhraman... you will be filled with joy and help others with love... that's enlightenment.

This is why i say I have never met any Hindu in India. The most fundamental mantra in Hinduism 'AUM' is clearly articulated in the shortest of the upanishads - Mandukya Upanishad. But majority of Hindu's don't know about it and need a youtube pop channel to tell them that. I wonder if 99% of hindu's know anything about Hinduism except the story Ramayana and Mahabaratha ( Since it was shown in tele as a serial ) .

That's interestig what you said about a video game character. Imagine you're a character inside your head (while dreaming of course), looking out of a window (your eyes, controling you with a joystick and talking into a mic to be an inner voice. Then press pause, see where it takes you. Sometimes it's easier to press pause than get there through meditation in physical world.

I’m 50 & can’t find a Hindu who can explain the basics. It’s probably more complex than it appears. Somehow Indians have the ability to simplify difficult concepts & complicate simple things. I’m still searching & will start with the basics.

OM is not a mantra. Chanting it increases conectartion. It is good for meditation. But Mantras are different. I have had first hand experience due to my revered guru OM Swamiji. Thanks.
Well he is right in some way but he is making things more complicated. OM SHANTI literally translates to om - I and shanti - peace. It is a mantra to remind yourself again and again that the eternal religion of the self is peace. You cant seek peace outside of yourself but remind yourself you are the embodiment of peace itself.

Hinduism has many powerful shlokas nama/mantras and many more. But to leverage the power, one must lead a very disciplined life like moderate food habits, control over desires, unselfish works and regular sadhana for long hours. Otherwise they become a good info pleasing to our eyes and ears but no experiences.

OM is Krsna, the Supreme, don't beat around the bush- yes we also say names of other Gods, while uttering the word OM or AUM- but it comes from Goloka Vrindavana, which Krsna resides, it shouldn't be used for any other Gods, because even Gods who are liberated, meditate on Krsna.

Having learned from a Sanskritist, A and U in the sankrit language combine to make an ohhh sound.
It is spelled AUM but pronounced OHM
So the 3 sounds creating 🕉 are ohhhh mmmm and the echo in silence.
