    In this episode of Electronic Basics I will show you how to use N-channel and P-channel MOSFETs as switches in order to turn on and off your electronic load with a control signal. This way you can, for example, use your Arduino to control loads that require more current than the output of the Arduino can handle.

    Thank you for demonstrating at 2:42 how sensitive MOSFETS with floating pins are, I always hear about using a pull-down resistor to fix them but never saw it inaction.

    Love these vids, currently doing a project involving controlling different loads with the electricity sent through nerves, and this vid really helped me understand these "bundles of joy" (especially when it comes to the magical smoke)

    @3:48, P-Channel MOSFET, you say voltage on the gate (VGS) shuts off the MOSFET, but the scope shows the opposite behavior.

    I really enjoy your videos.
    I learned electronic principles years ago, but much of what I learned has regressed to where I only remember how isolated components work, but not necessarily how they affect circuits when combined with other components. I'd really enjoy hearing you walk through the theory of operation for a simple circuit explaining how the current flows and is affected by each segment through the circuit. Just in case you are ever looking for a topic your audience would enjoy... I'd vote for this :-)

    thank you for the links. I'm trying to move beyond my 16 channel relay board (that clicks very loud) into using mosfets - just very wary because the supply is high amperage (10A/12v)

      If you want transistor tutorial stuff, I would watch a channel called Ben Eater. Yet he only explains transistors, logic gates, and complex logic circuits(his 8 bit PC), not other components.

    Hi GreatScott! how you feel to use opto-couple/opto-transistor on Arduino pins?? you will get then a complete voltage and a current isolation ( when use 2 separate power source for PCB/Arduino and MOSFET ) from MOSFET + small amount of hfe.
    Minus can be opto-couple/opto-transistor frequency of switching.
    Many Thx and I wait for other videos.
    Human can learn all LIFE and in the end HE realise the he die stupid :)

    I wanted to use an IRFz34N for a simple speed control circuit to my linear actuator (5-8 amps) controlled by my micro-controller.
    I ordered the parts and I have the pull down resister, but am I limited as to the switching frequency due to the issues you mention?

    Hi Greatscott, very nice video as usual. I have a logic level n-channel mosfet(FQP30N06L) and switchin on-off by appliying 0 and 3.3v Vgs from a gpio pin. Drain side I have a load operates at +5V. After the pc turns off, PC pulls up +5V all GPIO pins(Vgs). As a result after pc turns off it turns on the load again. How can I prevent the gate voltage if more than 5V at the logic level mosfet? Best.
