  • South Koreans involved in the local economy surrounding US military base Camp Humphreys share opinions on the upcoming US-DPRK summit, with talks between the North Korean and US leaders in Hanoi just days away, speculation is building that the pair could agree to a peace treaty -- in return for denuclearisation measures -- and that the withdrawal of US troops might follow.

I’m from Edina Minnesota. I’m a Micronesian-American (Pacific Islander) or I’m just American so never mind my ethnicity. Thing is, I really hope this topic is brought up again. People criticize American presence and want them out, and that’s okay since they have the right to say what comes to mind. I also think the same people don’t realize that there is quite a large sum of us here in the U.S that want our troops to come home. We have our own problems all of which are domestic, and even a little over across the north and south boarders. South Korea and Japan are beautiful countries I’m sure, but with the economic miracle South Korea went through, and Japan still being a powerhouse in more ways than one, I’m sure they can handle their own conflicts. They are strong after all, so nothing is stopping them from upping their military prowess either. This may sound bizarre as well, but maybe we could even use our military at home by expanding the active duty and reserve’s reaches into their already “first responder capable” skills like the National Guard. Perhaps even homeland security if they don’t have that section already, that is. And as I’ve said about the capabilities against the enemies of Japan and South Korea both foreign and domestic, I’m sure they can figure things out. No hate, no fear-mongering, no nothing. I respect their opinions, observations, needs, etc. We just want our troops back. 👍🏽

But we have recently realized that it is really dangerous to rely heavily on a country for our security. We MUST be nuclear-armed and defend ourselves without a U.S. troops in Korea.

S Korean government should always remember what Henry Kissinger said. "America has no permanent friends or enemies, only interests" good example what happened after US station THAAD in S Korea. Also during Vietnam war, Henry Kissinger said "It may be dangerous to be America's enemy, but to be America's friend is fatal" good example is why Israel rely on themselves for defense even with strong support from Washington and telling people that Washington is working for it's own interest because it's set up that way. Thus S Korea must build its own tactical nuclear weapons and nuclear submarines for its own defense. Alliance doesn't mean anything but just piece of paper to Washington.

Also N Korea can't start a war because they have no food or gas to run old 1950s weapons. That's why N Korea can't give up nuclear weapons because they have no chance with conventional warfare with S Korea. It's funny that they only filmed old guy and woman like I said. S Korea can build its own nuclear weapons and nuclear submarines and defend itself. LOL

jeff strong the thing is, I don’t think you realize how expensive those are. Even for Korea, there is a reason they don’t have them yet. I’m not denying, nor insulting you, what you say is true, but the cost of that for South Korea might be expensive. Sure North Korea has a few, but why waste so much money on them when a nuclear bomb would damage ourselves simply from the shear range? I think a lot of Americans aren’t thinking about the cost, and are underestimating the north. Whenever you hear from the media North Korea has outdated weapons, they underestimate the shear numbers. North Korea will probably run out of food sooner or later, but by then the southerners would probably be almost dead.
