Also some other interesting facts. Using a CO2 Calculator this drive produced roughly 1.39T of C02. . A flight for two from the California coast to Wilmington would produce roughly 1.3T of C02. . A Private Jet from Cambria to Wilmington would produce roughly 22T of CO2 . We crossed 8 states over the drive. . Dates traveled were April 14th - April 28th . We were very lucky with weather, avoiding rain almost the entire trip. . The smoke you can see leaving the Grand Canyon was the very beginnings of the large New Mexico complex fire that is happening at the moment. . We were able to watch the sun rise over the ocean on the east coast and watch the sun set over the ocean on the west coast. . We decided to Timelapse west to east to avoid the sun being in the camera lens during the day.
In Europe, or Germany in particular, we would also add the CO2 footprint of going by train, which is probably a 10th of both car and plane, depending on how much of the railways are electrified. And it would also remove the stress of having to drive while letting you look out at the landscape. Too bad it's just much less flexible, even in Europe.
Hope you are all having a good weekend! This video is quite a bit different than anything else we have done but it’s just been a project we’ve been thinking about for a long time and we wanted to see if we could pull it off. Hopefully it’s kind of cool for people who haven’t traveled much within the US. It’s such a massive country and has so many beautiful spots along the way. It was a really fun trip and we hope you enjoy! We will be back to bike content again next week :)
We first drove across (most of) the country when we moved to Portland in 2015, and it blew our minds. It's hard to grasp the vastness of the US, and the west in particular, without driving or bicycle touring it in person. Great project, well done. I would've forgotten to turn on the camera by day three or something. 😄
As full time travelers who've traveled across this country... it's very interesting to watch the way the land changes as you drive. When we were kids it was an eternity but since we've been full timing on the road, the open spaces are getting smaller and seem to take less time to go through. I don't think this is because the countryside is filling up. I think it's just that we are more cognizant of how far things really are and we often wish the journey was longer. As they say, life is short - so the journey is all too often. Glad you did this video for those who've never had the opportunity. Oh and traveling in your "house" is a completely different experience than "moving across the country" or traveling by staying in motels. It's like a whole new world.
Heyyy, you guys did the I-40 trip huh? I have done close to that that twice in the last three years; once from Holbrook, AZ to I-81 close to Knoxville, TN, once from Flagstaff, AZ to 81 again. I also did I-90 from Syracuse, NY to Seattle, WA in 2019. Going back to hometown Binghamton, NY from Charleston, SC in 2 weeks and wanna do Albany to Boston in the near future to finish the 90! By the by, thanks for the cool MTB schtuff as well!
Hey you guys are great. I hope to see you in Bentonville this weekend. You both have inspired me to become a better rider and a better person. Thank you for what you do.
My son got married on New Year’s Day in 2015 in Cambria. I drove his civic back loaded with all his possessions to Summerville SC. One weekend we were looking at the pebble beach of the Pacific Ocean and the next weekend collecting sea shells at Folly Beach on the Atlantic Ocean. We drove through a blizzard in New Mexico but we got his car and goods to his new home. Would not want to do that ride again though. Thanks for the video !
Sending love from the UK. I came across you for the first time today and without doubt I've a lot of catching u to do! What really comes across and makes you both so refreshing to watch is that there are no big ego's on show. You just seem compassionate with a warmth and love for sharing with your audience. Kyle - glad to see you're on the mend healthwise. Now you can both get out there and enjoy life even more :)
Hey Kyle! I grew up in Paradise, CA almost all my life and spent a lot of time in Chico! When I returned to visit with my kids we rode the pump track there and had lots of fun. Didn’t know you made that! Thank you! Your videos are so helpful and I won my first mtb race last month! Anyways thanks for your great videos!
The quality of this video is amazing. I've done a few long (2000+ miles) road trips, and I wish I would have been able to capture them like this. Without a video [or having done this yourself], it's tough to really understand the scale of this country--how you can be driving for hours at a time, all through the same-looking landscapes and with hardly anything around, and only travel a single state (while a flight would have got you across the whole country by then)... thank you for sharing!
Hey Kyle you don't know me but you used to know my dad Shane Vogel. We both hope that you're doing well with your health and having a good time riding bikes. Stay rad dude!
Hello Kyle and April, I am a road trip lover from China. Your trip was very successful, the scenery in the United State is beautiful and attractive. Thank you for your sharing! By the way, I wonder what car did you drive along the trip? Is it a pick-up or SUV? Thank you.😀
Thank you! It has been on our minds forever. My (Kyle’s) mom hasn’t been able to travel much throughout her life and I figured it would be cool for people like her to watch and experience what it looks like going across America :)
Glad to see you guys did this. There is so, so much to this country, and even though a trip straight across gets you to see alot, there is SO much more to see. I remember driving east out of Yellowstone back in 1999 and seeing a lot of weird smoke or weird clouds in the mirrors, was the beginnings of a massive fire there too. As awful as they are, better to be on the leaving end of it. Your path gave you guys such an amazing cross section, literally, of the amazing variation across the country. Experience of a lifetime for sure! It's crazy how it can give you the bug to explore more, maybe regionally, but still. Even if it is a while until the next trip, don't let that bug to see more go away! Take care guys!
Nice work guys!! This is incredibly well done. Haven't made it through the whole video but definitely plan to as I one day hope to be able to make a trip across our awesome country.
That’s Crazy! Yeah the gas Vans over here are around 16-19 mpg and the diesel ones are maybe 22-25mpg with some going a bit higher. Glad you enjoy! It’s been a fun project we’ve wanted to attempt for a while. Kind of like a little time capsule to look back on in the future :)
Just finished your coast to coast road trip , no skipping, I have a lot of time on my hands, and I thought driving from San Francisco to Tahoe was far , glad that you are back to health, just charged my Marin alpine E2 battery for a rip tomorrow, great road trip
This is really cool. I assume one of you polished off the 72oz steak in Amarillo. The Walmart at 2:23:04 is where I stopped for bandages and Bactine after wiping out at The Railyard. I did not do nearly as well on the composite wood wall ride as April. Nice Ride Series van cameo, as well.
Thank you! It was so much fun! We just made it back home a couple weeks ago. But are heading to Bentonville again today for the bentonville bike festival
Haha thanks! Yeah it’s a beautiful country. Pretty amazing how much contrast there is with the southwest deserts and the east coast lush trees and mountains.
Great video. You passed through my hometown of Bakersfield. You were real close to our crosstown bike path. Don't know if you made any stops in Tehachapi (I lived there for a short time as a kid in the mid-'70s but Kohnen's Bakery is the best! Excellent baked goods and sammiches. A must stop if you are ever back in the area.
Congrats on a great trip! Wish I coulda waved at you as you passed through Raleigh! I’ve driven through all the continental states at some point and it’s amazing the diversity of landscapes out there; all beautiful in their own way.
I would like more videos like this on all the Interstates that cross the United States, from west to east and from north to south, because I love watching people traveling across the country.❤
Thank you so much for this! Im fourteen. I like to take timelapses during long car rides, and I also want to explore as much of the u.s. as possible. This was really cool to see someone who actually did this. If I have time I’ll watch the full four hours. If anything this is at least a really interesting glance look at just the tip of the cosmic iceberg when it comes to how small we are.
Not sure when you were on the road but would have been cool to cross paths! My wife and I did Ft Myers FL to Sedona AZ but went through Bentonville to ride and camp for 5 days. Loved Bentonville! We did 3 weeks in May for our trip…4905 miles round trip.
Love this so much. Thank you for recording this and sharing it. I just did a road trip across 8 states and wanted to pull this off but my camera wasn't up to it. What camera did you use?
How fun! I watched it in several sittings. I recognize bunches of sections through the SW from Cambria. Used to go out to Cambria often when I lived in SoCal.
Love the time lapse. I was having a recovery day today so this video was perfect. April were you driving? No tailgating. No left lane bandit action. Lol.
Great travel video I just made it through California, it’s just as good as seeing April race the sea otter or April hitting that massive jump over you, I bought a brake rotor from jenson and it came with a picture of Aprils sky jump, this is great for pounding some beer and smoke I feel like I’m on the trip with you guys, amazing seeing the back country on a trip I could never do , the music is fun to , I hope you’re married to April because she is a cute keeper , almost into New Mexican might make this a two day video, great idea , you two are amazing , decided to pop one more cold one and push through New Mexico Texas and Oklahoma, man it’s flat and bear-in out there , on a 85” high def it looks like I’m seating in the passenger seat, feels like I’m a cross country trucker
Welcome to NC! 💕 Dockside on the other side of the bridge (you passed it) for good crab dip. Oceanic for dinner with a view and Strawberries Daiquiri a Wrightsville Beach 😉😋
Hi Kyle & April I just found your channel and as a 67 year old mountain bike rider myself I am enjoying the videos. But I have to say I really enjoyed this particular travel video as it brought back memories of a similar trip I took across your fantastic country, you see I am from Australia and late December in 2017 I flew to San Francisco from Melbourne Aust then took a 3 day train trip to New York. The route the train took was a little bit more north than yours but the same trajectories through mostly the same States. The big difference it was winter and snow but I loved it. One last observation while I was in San Francisco I hired a car and drove north to Petaluma one day then south down through Silicon Valley the next day and you video reminded me of how hard it was for me from a country that drives on the left of the road now driving on the right. Thank you very much for your Channel, I will be subscribing. My name is Cliff and if you are interested my trip is on my channel CLens Media.
Seeing you guys drive through all the streets near the end in Wilmington brought back a lot of ❤ i spent H.S./College out there. Can’t believe you got a parking spot in the lot by Tower 7!
Valid question! Kyle tried his best to drive extra safe to begin with, also keeping in mind how it would probably look sped up. He also scanned through the footage the best he could to make sure things look ok.
OMG guys! That was the exact route that I took when I drove from the Bay Area to NC. I had done three times and I strongly encourage anybody to do it at least once in their lives. The drive from OK to NC is so beautiful! Texas not so much - felt like it was never ending! Are you guys permanently staying in NC for good? Unfortunately for me, I graduated from Duke and had to leave the beautiful state of NC. I was actually surprised how stunning Asheville and Wilmington were. Great content guys!
Great movie. In about 50 days I'll be road-tripping with two friends in the states. I'll make a timelapse. What are your settings? And what was the interval time between the pictures?
I made a similar trip to this way back when. I went from Camp Pendleton to Long Island New York by bus and it was nowhere near as fun or scenic. But it was cheap!
Driving from DFW-PDX, thinking about doing something similar. What is the model of your dashcam? I have one w/ GPS, but I believe it simply embeds the coords in the video. What did you do to get the coordinates + doing the overlay?
Impressive to see the landscape cross-country. Stating the obvious, the most beautiful parts are super dry and cannot feed large numbers of people (although more and more are moving there).
great vid, i want to start doing stuff like this, may i ask - did the gopro not overheat? most do - and i assume you ran it off a powerbank of some sort? thanks
I've stood at that starting point; on the beach overlook many times. The logs are still there on the sand. I too pump gas at that Chevron gas station on way to Grand Canyon. Arkansas state line is furthest I driven , but if I ever have time to drive cross country to the East Coast, I want to make it to St. John's in Newfoundland .
Great video! Did you get to ride in Bentonville? I am hearing some pretty good things about the trails there. Also, glad you got to visit Wilmington, NC, It's a fantastic little town on the coast!
I might be biased, but I like the west coast since I grew up on this side. It is a lot different on the east, I do love all of the vegetation on the east though. -April
Made the cross country trip several times while in the military. One car I had since new I finally got rid of yesterday. 335k and the transmission finally went. #volvoforlife
@@AprilRideMTB Thank you for the recognition. Enjoy as much as this great country as you can and by all means explore elsewhere. I did. Southern France is beautiful, Costa Rica was probably the most fun I've had and Kuwait was gorgeous. There are so many stories from al over and your content is an exceptional presentation of that. Go talk to people, experience what you can when you can and LIVE!
I believe you took Hwy 40, I did that trip from Nashville to Everett Washington. It was a rushed trip straight driving as my husband I had to fly to just had to get home. Unpleasant trip at the end.
this is awesome! i don't think i can watch it fully right now. it's 10 in the evening here! 😅 this looks like a great journey. can you share the camera setup used for this? i'm amazed and interested on doing something similar on a roadtrip! you guys are the best!
Thanks so much John! Yeah we used a gopro 10 on the dashboard, looking through the windshield. And used the hyper lapse feature. We had two cameras and kept switching them when they would overheat
@@AprilRideMTB that explains why the footage is really great looking. i'm impressed how the battery and memory held the whole trip filming. will be continuing on this 4 hour film tomorrow! again, this upload of yours is a gem!!! more of these! ☺️
@@AprilRideMTB The whole beach is a good spot. All the swimming along WB is safe for swimming. Next Time! (BTW, Berm is now on my short list thanks to this video)
Hellow Kyle and April I just watched the vid that you made last 2years on how to drop so now we know how to drop but how to conquer your fear in the drops because it makes me nervous and panic then crash
47:00 ish, this song is in Danny's Cruising Vol. 1 and I heard it in another MTB video just the other day. (Not a complaint, it fits these carefree videos quite well.)
Europeans often don't relate to our distance scales. If I drive 8 hours a day, it's not until mid-afternoon on the third day that I even get out of my province when heading west.
I feel like being a truck driver would be awesome. Not much pay but all you do it sit behind a wheel. Not great but not bad. All you do is chill, and you even can bring a buddy along
Cool trip :-) I took my family on a Europe trip in our Chrysler, in summer 2018. From middle of sveden over Denmark, Germany, Austria, Slovenia and to Zadar in Croatia, southeastern part. Stayed ther for a week (RBnB house) then back home again :-) 3 days down, and 3 days home. So gone for 2 weeks :-) Nice to have built in DVD in car, for the kids ;-)
As glorious as your video is, and thank you for posting (!), my minor complaint is: I like to follow time lapse trips on Google Earth. I do wish you had put the Route numbers of the highways you were travelling on. Your music choices are fabulous, by the way! John Shaw Calgary Ab. Can.

A US gallon is just 0.833 of an Imperial gallon, so that's 21.6 UK mpg. Not much of an improvement, but something.

Great watching the scenery change.
It always amazes me that USA has such a huge population but there remains so many stretches of vast (relatively) empty space.
That's because it doesn't have a huge population relative to its size. China is about the same size but has more than 4 times the population.

Hi Cliff! Glad to hear that this video sparked some fond memories. It was one of Kyle’s goals with this video for people.
Seeing you guys drive through all the streets near the end in Wilmington brought back a lot of ❤ i spent H.S./College out there. Can’t believe you got a parking spot in the lot by Tower 7!
One thing I have always wondered with long vids like this do you watch the whole thing to check everything is alright
Valid question! Kyle tried his best to drive extra safe to begin with, also keeping in mind how it would probably look sped up. He also scanned through the footage the best he could to make sure things look ok.
Thank you! Very interesting
What a fantastic adventure.
We were just doing a road trip with fun stops on the way. The trees were so amazing on the east coast!

@@AprilRideMTB Yeah I didn't click it! I knew it wasn't you guys!
You guys should stop howler bike park just opened last month in walnut shade Missouri an hour and a half or so from Bentonville
Nice
Great movie. In about 50 days I'll be road-tripping with two friends in the states. I'll make a timelapse. What are your settings? And what was the interval time between the pictures?
New Subscribers here Buddy! I liked the Timelapse, I hope I can do my driving tours here as well. Thank you for sharing, this was a long drive eh!
Wilmington resident, this was awesome to watch! Interesting you took I-40 to Wilmington instead of US 74 from Asheville.
Impressive to see the landscape cross-country. Stating the obvious, the most beautiful parts are super dry and cannot feed large numbers of people (although more and more are moving there).
Beauty’s in the eye of the beholder. Used to live in a very scenic area of the West but moved back east because I missed the green.
Thanks for sharing!
great vid, i want to start doing stuff like this, may i ask - did the gopro not overheat? most do - and i assume you ran it off a powerbank of some sort?

Which coast do you like best? I’m down in SoCal, haven’t made a trip to the white sand beaches of the east coast! Great video
I might be biased, but I like the west coast since I grew up on this side. It is a lot different on the east, I do love all of the vegetation on the east though.

*In the 1980s or so, when HBO showed short films between features, one of them was cross country in 18 minutes.*
1:55 *How fast is that? 300 mph?*
That overturned 18 wheeler in Nashville!!!

Made the cross country trip several times while in the military. One car I had since new I finally got rid of yesterday. 335k and the transmission finally went. #volvoforlife
Sounds like a lot of memories with your car, that must have been sad to get rid of it!
Thank you for your service
@@AprilRideMTB Thank you for the recognition. Enjoy as much as this great country as you can and by all means explore elsewhere. I did. Southern France is beautiful, Costa Rica was probably the most fun I've had and Kuwait was gorgeous. There are so many stories from al over and your content is an exceptional presentation of that. Go talk to people, experience what you can when you can and LIVE!
Wow. Thanks for the great views of the American countryside. 👍🏽👍🏽
Glad you enjoyed it! Thanks for the comment!
great vid. i want to do the same on my bike travels ... how did you integrate the map
Make it to the burgh someday! Let us take you to Alameda!!
This is super cool. Wish I could get away from work for a couple weeks to take a trip like this 😁
I'm new to the channel. Love the music choices.
Thank you!

I believe you took Hwy 40, I did that trip from Nashville to Everett Washington. It was a rushed trip straight driving as my husband I had to fly to just had to get home. Unpleasant trip at the end.
Great video. Note: if someone is lazy to calculate gas money. They can use free tool from AAA.
this is awesome! i don't think i can watch it fully right now. it's 10 in the evening here!
Please tell me you stopped to ride in Asheville?! Please tell me you went swimming at Wrightsville?!
We did ride at Berm park and berm peak. But we did not go swimming, if we had known there is a good spot I am sure we would have!
@@AprilRideMTB The whole beach is a good spot. All the swimming along WB is safe for swimming. Next Time! (BTW, Berm is now on my short list thanks to this video)
Is this 5x speed? Looks smooth. What's your dashcam model/brand?
cool video thankyou, minus the stops, how long were you guys driving for?
Thank you! Without stops the drive is 46 hours.
A road trip in USA ... 🤩 I hope sometimes dream come true.
Even it's not mtb this timelap is a good idea 👍
Thank you!
Hellow Kyle and April I just watched the vid that you made last 2years on how to drop so now we know how to drop but how to conquer your fear in the drops because it makes me nervous and panic then crash

This is very cool, we’re y’all driving on Route 66 during the first part?
Yeah we basically followed route 66 which was replaced with Highway 40
I bet that was really cool
Amazing how you traveled such distance in 4 hours
47:00 ish, this song is in Danny's Cruising Vol. 1 and I heard it in another MTB video just the other day. (Not a complaint, it fits these carefree videos quite well.)
It's superb video! it's a long trip.🛣
Thank you!
Europeans often don't relate to our distance scales. If I drive 8 hours a day, it's not until mid-afternoon on the third day that I even get out of my province when heading west.
Ontario?
@@lincolnlu9869 Yup. To be honest it's probably the worst case. :-)
I got lost on yt and found this channel. I'm glad I got lost.
Glad you enjoyed it!
I feel like being a truck driver would be awesome. Not much pay but all you do it sit behind a wheel. Not great but not bad. All you do is chill, and you even can bring a buddy along
wdym not much pay? thepay is insane. at least here in eastren europe :)
I've thought about doing this same thing but facing the camera toward my kids in the backseat.
😂😂
Thanks
Thank you so much!!
ironically i was at that I-40 stretch near the arizona border just a few hours after this recording and there was a huge accident but on the westbound
Also I may of passed you Near Kingman/Flagstaff Arizona opposite side
Cool trip :-) I took my family on a Europe trip in our Chrysler, in summer 2018. From middle of sveden over Denmark, Germany, Austria, Slovenia and to Zadar in Croatia, southeastern part. Stayed ther for a week (RBnB house) then back home again :-) 3 days down, and 3 days home. So gone for 2 weeks :-) Nice to have built in DVD in car, for the kids ;-)

Bike Goals🥰.
As glorious as your video is, and thank you for posting (!), my minor complaint is: I like to follow time lapse trips on Google Earth. I do wish you had put the Route numbers of the highways you were travelling on. Your music choices are fabulous, by the way!
