For the Mercedes-Benz Future Truck 2025 is sparing on resources, reduces emissions of all types, ensures maximum road traffic safety and increases the level of networking in road transport. Goods traffic in the future will be safer, more efficient and more connected as a result. The Future Truck 2025 thus marks a revolution for road traffic and its infrastructure, the truck driving profession and the haulage industry as a whole.

+sgtsnakeeyes11 It will take a while for that. For those cars to "self drive" you need good quality roads, good road signs/signals and let's not forget, good gps units. I think that we are a little bit behind with all these... I can see the self driving trucks working for very well known roads, but when I am driving (in Germany included) on roads that are not on my GPS after many years (and hell, some of them are parts of highway, 2-3 lines for a lane), please forgive my reticence to accept that the self driving cars will be ubiquitous in 20 years. Maybe 50.

I don't see this completely replacing human drivers YET, but it could be something like an airplane's autopilot system. It would free the driver to do other things while covering long and boring stretches of highway, but qucikly alert the driver and put him back in charge in case of emergency.
Now that 8 years have passed, I wonder what are your views on this matter

My mother and I always spoke of owning a car that drove it's self ( as she never learned how to drive herself), sadly she passed in 2003 and now i see that Mercedes Benz has a almost self driving car in the new E Class, maybe the time has come for me to purchase a E Class in her honor ,

I'm looking at this in 2016 thinking, wow, we've done so much technological progress and we will still be burning oil in 2025 as well? Seem ridiculous. They should really focus more on making these trucks 0 emissions. That's the innovation. Saving this planet.
The problem is, that today no battery technology exists that can support a vehicle like this on electricity. A truck needs a very high range and weighs very much. As long as no new batteries are developed this won't happen.
As a truck driver i know that this technology doesn't need me to take the wheel. It can drive safely to any destination. Most don't know this but there are also Automated Fueling stations where the truck position itself and a machine completely refuels your truck with no human intervention.
There are automated factories with automated forklifts that can load and unload a truck. This technology is amazing and the need for human labor is no longer relevant and only exist in any form due to the outdated concept of monetary economics.
We need to accept this technology so we can start living our lives instead of living the lives that monetary economics has forced us to live.

+XrossuX from what this video shows, it could simply be following the road's lines while avoiding other cars. A few cameras, a radar and a simple computer can do that without needing any form of network.
+Paulo Paul what data are you talking about ? It could just be following the white lines while avoiding other cars. Very little data is required for that. Also, you could easily fit all the world's current roads on a single map in a regular hard drive. GPS sattelites are just there to pinpoint the user's location on them and give additionnal informations, such as the weather or trafic, which are not needed for a simple highway auto-pilot.
Now, if you wanted to completely remove the driver and allow the lorry to drive itself on any small roads i would understand, but nothing shown in this video could not be done without networking.

You are right, but Germany is very socialistically-conservative (if you know what I mean). They would still rather pay a driver for doing nothing at all in the cockpit, just to say that they are employed and doing work. Also it is easier than to change the laws there.
So Mercedes is adjusting to this nonsense.

Noah S. Seriously though, wing mirrors have a serious effect that multiplies itself as reaches the back of the car. Wing mirrors seriously screw up aero if they're not done properly.

Good concept, but the reality is a different story. Those cameras for the side view are already on the trucks in 2020 and there are many complains from the drivers due to the lenses obstruction in the rainy and snowy weather. Good point for aerodynamics but not critical. On 40 tons truck there are many other ways to save the fuel. I'd rather have the regular mirrors. Way less expensive for maintenance and replacement. Front grill of course doesn't have to be with so many fancy LEDs. Anyway, thanks a lot for your video. All the Best!

Cool work and everything from Mercedes, but its never gonna work in general haulage. Reality of transport in Europe is rather opposite of what is shown in the video. So driver is still gonna have to be in the truck, so you will still have to pay him, so why pay for all this technology if you gain nothing. Salary for truck drivers is allready as low as minimum wage or even lower in many cases, so I think it will not get you the driver for better price. Its another story if you could use it without the driver, maybe possible on some terminal to terminal routes, but only applicable if the laws will allow it, but even in that case there will have to be extra staff to unload/load, check the vechicle for tire cuts and things like that, plus extra cost for servicing autonomous truck, will it pay off? But for most work done by trucks this will not work, there are so many situations where a driver is needed not for driving, but for many other things like visiting the customers office, fixing the load, working with transport coordinator, finding solutions for problems that happen, Also don't forget that trucks drive ïn roadworks,big cities, ice covered mountains where chain use is required, they also travel east where there are complicated border crossing prossedures, and the systems in those countries are years behind western europe.

The reasons for automated vehicle and the system is, its better than human beings. Human beings have their boundaries in response, observing, attention...and technology tries to overcome them. Vehicles can be faster, safer and more efficient if they will be based on automated systems and can communicate with each other.

Steven Farm understood, I have just always found the logic that technology is more reliable than humans since humans made the technology. But perhaps it's more an issue of the human condition deteriorates over time and is less reliable across the differences in human talents and capabilities. Technology then therefore has the ability to be more predictable than a variety of humans at the same task.

+DA DEPTHS You're actually not in control in a vehicle unless you're drivina a gear-driven vehicle anyway imo. Otherwise, you're riding, not driving. As for all the modern technology, you cannot stay in the past. A lot of old stuff that one may like, becomes out-dated. I currently drive a 2011 E-class, but the body-style is starting to look dated to me.

What an amazing piece of technology. It does everything but takes away the joy of driving with all those tech support. But it will be a lot safer truck to drive. Kudos to Mercedes Benz for making another great vehicle.

In the uk it is illegal to drive without a licence as it is in most places round the world. That said would autonomus vehicles need one,or the program that runs it and would the truck or car need to sit a driving test.

While I love the technology behind this all, I don't like the fact that a computer basically removes the need of a human driver. Thats annoying. And what about it this comes to consumer cars, I love driving, its fun. I don't want some stupid computer driving for me....
I don't know about you guys but I kind of prefer a car that still has a steering wheel directly linked to the steering wheels. I like the idea that if a cars gadgets fail, a car can still be driven perfectly normally and safely.
The amount of times an engine kills itself simply because a sensor gets damaged and the engine fucks up as a consequence.
I hate the amount of people control a car has already. Cruise control is the absolute limit for me. I still like to be aware and in control. If you want to get from a to b without worrying about controlling yourself. Get on public transport. That's a lot easier to automate.
People just need to accept the risks in driving and do thier upmost to not be the cause of accidents or incidents.

TechExplorer Yeah I also found that a very interesting approach, that's why I wanted to share it with you. What I find a little bit funny is that the lower front looks "blurry", the structure obviously is made that way that it optically looks like you would have set an artificial blur there in the editing. Do you see what I mean?

Call me a sceptic, I learnt to to drive properly with a conventional vehicle and frankly just feel as amazing as these advancements may be there taking the human element out of everything bit by bit, I do not like the thought of A) relying on a essentially a computer to drive and B) taking the need of truck drivers, couriers, bus drivers etc away aka actual jobs, if and when these roll off the factory line for commercial use there'll be innumerable drivers who have years of experience basically kicked to the kerb because computers are so "superior" I hope they're to expensive to buy to ensure the guaranteed jobs of drivers.
As it stands it could be argued most of the times accidents are human error yes however computers have there share of problems to, if the system fries or has a bug it'll screw over the driving system and probably cause just as bad an accident and who is negligible then, the computer technician who monitors the damn thing, the one who gets hit or the computer? More to the point if the system is to dependent on the the software etc and it does have issues who's to say it's even capable to drive without those systems and more importantly what if the drivers behind the wheel are so acclimatised to the computer doing all the hard work they're incapable of actually driving themselves, there's to many if's and maybe's about this I'd rather we stick to the tried and tested method of real people behind the wheel.
Human drivers can get drunk or simply sick behind the wheel and cause accidents. This auto driving technology will become more mature with time and time will come when the probability of accuracy will be greater for machine then compare to human driver. Remember days when cars were actually driven by humans, nowadays we give instruction to our steering wheel(by moving steering) to turn, which in turn give instruction to computer and computer actually turns the wheels, same with accelerator and brake. Now we just give instructions to our car and rest is done by computer. Now imagine instruction given to onboard computer directly by sensors and decision making computer, this is how such systems work. trust me I am a Robotics entrepreneur.
The main reason for all this is because humans are lazy and through-out our existence we persuaded the dream of ultimate convenience. So in the end we will all be very lazy fucks ;D
bilbo baggins Not for once do I nor anyone else believe you're a robotics Entrepreneur. If you were then you will know that no matter what their will ALWAYS need to be a human element. Aeronautics is far more advanced then vehicular technology, you don't see them taking pilots out of the equation. It's simple it will never work because noone will ever trust a vehicle of that magnitude to the operate on the streets alone. A vehicle with that weight driving along side soccer moms ect. We can't stop planes from falling out of the sky, but yet you speak of taking humans out of cars......?
GonZilla0214 There is human element involved, the passenger is human who is the consumer. In aeronautics pilot is required for takeoff and landing. But fortunately vehicle can be safely driven from point a to point b by computer, and even if some malfunction occurs there are many safety interlocks which make sure that accidents don't occur and if there is some malfunction in vehicle, the vehicle can safely park itself to service lane and call the service support. The system don't compensate for others fault, means if some other vehicle slams into such car, the computer can't do anything, neither human driver can do much in such condition. Any ways let see what comes in future.

Cool concept, but a few questions... where are the road-illuminating headlamps? What about sufficient intake and cooling air?
zshadows The lights are supposed to be all integrated in the front, you just dont see them when they are not on. Hmm air cooling, good question - maybe at the lower end?
