Hi Robin, Basically, we use FOS in WSM for materials, and it is the ratio of the strength of the material to the permissible stress. Using FOS we restrict the stresses in the material induced by the expected working load (Service Load). And we use FOS assuming the reinforced concrete behaves in a linear elastic manner.
