  • My 98 XJ has been running hot at trail speed as of late, so I had this electric fan that I thought may be the ticket for slower speeds to keep the temps down. See what happens when I field test my E-fan install! #jeeplife #coolingmods #jeepisoverheating

    overheated with dual and tripple spal fans in the hot desert sands. always had to stop to cool down. ripped it all out back to stock with a new ZJ clutch and stock aux fan on a switch was the answer to all my problems. now it sounds like a mack truck in hot weather but never overheats. the radiator is just too small, there's no way around this.
    FYI the reason you gain power with electric fans is because it's not pushing as much air. There's no free energy!

    My dude, your rig is overheating with OEM as well as aftermarket components. It's time to do some troubleshooting with the pump/thermostat and possibly how clean the block is.

    I like this idea of a cooling series for the jeep keep it going. It is a good idea to figure out the best solution now so you and your family does not get stranded in the middle of nowhere when it is 110° out side.

    I think Jeep engineers did a good job on the cooling system.I would make sure the system is clean and replace anything that isn't up to par.The system worked when it was new,it should still work now.Just my opinion.....

      i'd bet 8 times out of 10 the issue is with the fan clutch worn out. the rest is clogged radiator and other neglected items.

    I have found that the best thing to do for me is keeping the clutch fan but use one from the Grand Cherokee HD (it will be a little noisier) and if you can there are plenty of better fans from other vehicle (some 2 speed) that can fit into the spot where the electric fans it but keep it wired to have the ability to run it constantly. My XJ's cooling system isn't perfect but it's manageable and certainly better than stock form. But I'm still always watch that gauge when I'm putting it through it's paces. Love your channel!

    NAPA part number TEM 272310 is the ZJ fan clutch that is the swap for the XJ, $40. Also make sure it has the appropriate 195* thermostat installed.

    I would suggest that you buy or make a shroud for your electric fans if you plan to run them. Without a shroud, the fans can only cool off around half your radiator at the most as there are dead zones in the center of each fan as well as around the fans.

    You need a Lincoln Mark viii fan, those move a massive amount of air, they can hang with a clutch fan easily!
    I made a video on this subject on my channel, if you check it out I’m pretty sure you’ll be able to figure out what the problem was. Cheers!

    the older model oem xj fans move less air as the more modern swept blade style. I think I remember reading that the factory belt & electric fans push a combined cfm of around 4000, with around 1k coming from the electric fan. which is something to consider when ordering electric fans, to meet or exceed that number of cfm
    with hood spacers i noticed about a 10 to 15 degree difference in guage temp, so it does help but is still no match without a good fan clutch, good shroud and good radiator.

    Auxiliary cooler with fan(s) will make a big difference. I wouldn't put it in the back. All the trailing heat wouldn't cool it as well. Up front, as low as possible with out getting it in a crash/ smash zone. I would also change the thermostat to a lower temp one. I've never run anything over a 165. Check the circulation on your water pump as well.

    I know it’s an old video but* I have a 95 xj with a snorkel,k suspension fan override, Mishimoto rad, hesco HFTH, and 195 HFT, and a 11* spall fan mod to replace the stock aux fan to be able to be on the trail comfortably in the Cali sand dunes during summer, my xj stock ran 210+ now it runs 190* 195 on a 90+ day in dead traffic with the Ac on you gotta pay to play in an XJ

    If you are overheating over 20mph, then the only way the fan is the problem is if it’s blowing backwards.
    Edit: just watched at roughly the 20 minute mark. When you come to a stop, and the temperature suddenly spikes ~30 degrees in less than a second - that doesn’t actually happen. An engine without coolant won’t heat up that fast. So you probably either have a wiring issue with the temp sensor, or a problem with the gauge, or??? I’m not saying it’s your only problem, but there is definitely something more than just a fan issue.
    Your 93 auxiliary fan was sufficient to cool a 93 XJ with a 4.0, which by any practical measure is the exact same 4.0 that is in your XJ. There is no reason to believe it isn’t good enough. I also doubt that the lack of the shroud over the mech fan is a major part of your issues either.
    Chrysler products in the 1990s may not have been the pinnacle of engineering, but I’m pretty sure that Cherokees didn’t routinely leave the factory overheating under any circumstances in 70 degree weather. It’s a Jeep. Chrysler knew people would take them off roading. There is something wrong/broken with your stock components. Throwing an oil cooler or anything else custom at it will not fix your underlying problem, only potentially mask it.
    If I had to guess, I’d say either a partly stuck thermostat, or a partly blocked radiator. It’s a long shot, but also make sure your serpentine belt is routed properly. If not, you might be spinning your water pump backwards.

      Good to read this … I’ve been running an e-fan for years (Houston & Dallas) with terrible AC. Fan died so I’ve just ordered a new fan clutch & blade to revert to the clutch fan. Nice to see that it improved AC and engine cooling for you. Did you put a shroud on the clutch fan?

    *Desert Cool or Desert Cooler monstrously oversized radiators...can make a big difference. Yes, they are heavier...and worth the cost and worth the extra few pounds. AVAILABLE FROM SEVERAL VENDORS and different makers. I would prefer the aluminum ones. Aluminum is light, fairly durable, resists corrosion, and dissipates heat very well. I am sure that you realize UNSPRUNG WEIGHT is 'on the wheels' & NOT supported by springs ... Your cooling system is , or should be, "sprung weight"...supported by springs.*

  • @jmartin9059
    @jmartin9059 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    *YES, oil coolers can work... do add oil capacity and can increase risks of OIL LEAKS... IF they are NOT plumbed for a full drain at oil change WE might not get a full " complete drain " oil change. As with many things, IF DONE PROPERLY, oil coolers do work very well. The key thing to remember: At 111 degree ambient temperatures with the a/c on, while claiming hills in a desert...^^operating at peak efficiency is NOT going to happen.^^ Keeping cool will surely burn more fuel...and cost you some horsepower and some torque. Replacement ENGINES and transmissions cost much more than the extra fuel to keep it all cool. OVERSIZED "Monerously oversized" DESERT COOL OR DESERT COOLER radiators do make a big difference. Some promise to cool 1000 horsepower...or Cool in the Mojave Desert... etc. Those are worth a look.*

    I'm confused do those things run constant. Because normally they only run at a certain degree a few lower than the motor temp and shut off if goes under. For example running down highway 65-75 they really serve no purpose.
    Maybe should put tran cooler somewhere else with smaller fans.

    • @dzlfreek
      @dzlfreek  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      the factory E-fan runs when the temp hit 210, or the AC is on. I wired these to key on battery power with a toggle so I can turn them off when I want to.

      @@dzlfreekcool that makes sense. Yep wasn't sure on temp trigger. Also AC forgot to mention correct. On my vehicle it doesn't kick until hear compressor clutch engage. Depending on AC how cold you keep it can kick on and off.
