    Great advice on volleys. Choking up the handle & keeping the non dominant hand involved are tips that will help a lot. Tnx!

    Thanks for the video - clear, helpful advice again. Hadn’t considered chocking grip with standard length racquet(def for extended length). I expect the trade off for less reach is better anticipation, movement, etc that comes with the confidence gained from so many more quality backhand volleys struck!🎾💪

      You’re very welcome Anthony! Yes, you don’t have to choke very far, just a little higher should make you feel a difference without losing too much reach!

    Very good! The "pinching" of the shoulder blades is precisely what I teach--both with the bh volley, and the 1 handed slice bh--it prevents the front shoulder from flying open--and gives more impetus to the racket arm. Do wish you had included 2 things: the importance of volleying with a straight racket arm...and how best to hit a 2 handed bh volley...more players are utilizing the 2 hander

    Why not setting the racket in upward position? It's close to your head, so you have good control.

    • @TheTennisMentor
      @TheTennisMentor  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I find players tend to hit the ball downwards from this position. It can be ok if you’re receiving a high volley but not so good for a a mid height or low volley.

    • @sergiosimbula
      @sergiosimbula ปีที่แล้ว

      @@TheTennisMentor no exactly plus you want to keep your racket face a little open to get some slice in your volleys. A racket face in upward position doesn't allow for that.

    Wow, extremely helpful. I play at an advanced level and I didnt know these tips. I play with a very heavy racquet, very relaxed wrists and grabbing always at the bottom. I have an issue with the racket dropping on the volleys and in effect, I was struggling at the net (and it sucks coz I play very aggressive). This video is probably gonna change my life.

    Excellent tips. I don't choke up on the handle because I think it will reduce my reach but I will try it out. Rafa has gotten better but he done so by crowding the net. The positions himself within 2 feet from the net and so he is prone to get hit by the ball as was demonstrated by Kyrgios. When my opponent does the same, I will aim at them also to send them a message to back off. If you are really a good volleyer, you can volley 4 feet away and still get to balls.

    • @TheTennisMentor
      @TheTennisMentor  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, Rafa is also brilliant at choosing when to come into the net. He makes his volleys look easy as he always goes in behind a very good approach. Let me know how choking the racket goes… you only need to move up an inch or so to feel the benefit!

    Thanks for this super helpful video! My backhand volley is definitely a weak spot and I don't really feel confident trying to poach with it, so will try some of these tips.
    If possible, could you do a video on the overhead? I generally have decent serve mechanics, but the overhead is much harder for me. Usually a lot of videos talk about the similarities between the two shots, but something explaining the differences between them would be amazing

    • @robmillsop3581
      @robmillsop3581 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Actually a lot of players struggling w their bh volley when using "continental"--find it far easier to use the "eastern"..that allows for the racket face to already be set slightly open--beneficial with the racket hand being in front of the racket...if the ball comes to your fh--due to your hand now being behind the racket--its much simpler to adjust the racket face depending on the height of the ball to perform a successful volley. Continental works well for you...but there are plenty that see great improvement going to eastern

      @@TheTennisMentor I think the holding the racket with the offhand tip works best for me as it stops me swinging or pulling the racket side ways across my body as much, both of which I have a tendancy to do even though I know I shouldn't as it messes up my volleys.

    Hi there, Ive watched some youtube videos on the backhand volley now. I have 3 questions for you:
    On the forehand volley, I understand that the index finger gives a good support.
    How about the backhand volley? Would it be a good idea to reduce the space for the index finger and raise up the thumb for stability instead? (some youtuber gave that idea)
    Regarding my own volley problem, I've been volleying with a continental grip for years now. On the forehand side it works perfect, but on the backhand side I have Zero control. The ball goes high a lot and with wayy too much slice. When i use two hands for example, I get good stability, but I dont do it, cause i was taught differently. ...Can you tell me your thoughts about using two hands? (I guess women do use this more, right?)
    And also some words about the contact zone? Coaches often say, contact has to be in front, but then my raquet is even more in a "slice" or cutting positing and the ball goes high.
    Should it be more sideways to your body, when using the continental grip? Ideas how to the good contact zone?
    Thank you!

    • @olliepearcetennis
      @olliepearcetennis 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I would say that it is impossible to tell without seeing you volley. But what I would say is if you are volleying the ball very high with lots of spin then it would probably be one or a combination of these two things. You are probably starting you racket to low underneath the ball which cause the ball to generally go higher and/or your strings are to open (strings pointing upwards) which again would cause the ball to go high. If you are using a continental grip I would recommend trying to point your strings more at the net (less upwards) to see if this helps to get rid of the ‘floaty’ volley’. But as I say this is a an educated guess, much easier to tell if I/a coach could see in person

    • @TheTennisMentor
      @TheTennisMentor  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You’re right about the trigger finger having more effect on the forehand volley than the backhand volley, but it definitely still helps. I see club players using their thumb as extra support but I don’t encourage it. If you’re receiving slow balls then you can get away with it, but it’s no good when the pace is faster.
      2 hands is ok but can be restrictive with reach. I’d focus on my third tip. Aim to stop your racket with your strings pointing the right direction and you’ll be able to flatten it out. If you’re playing at a level where you have time to change your grip, you could move your BH volley around closer to an Eastern BH grip.
      You’re also right about your contact point. If it’s further in front it will open up the strings more. However, I would encourage you to keep your contact point in front of you but not too far.
      Like Ollie said, it’s hard to pinpoint without seeing your volley but there is some general advice.
