How do Toilets Work?

  • Toilets are one of the marvels of the world. While you might not think so, they allow most of humanity to never have to think about their waste. You might not think much about the toilet in your house, but you’d certainly think twice if you didn’t have a toilet there.
But, how do these porcelain thrones actually work?

Watched a few videos explaining how toilets work before seeing this one, and this one was the only one that explained how filling the bowl with water made it flush. Thanks for clarifying things!

Yes, most videos don't even address this, which is arguably the most important part: the S trap

When you showed the siphon operation, you should have shown "all" the water in the bowl be siphoned away. Water would not have remained in the bowl the way it was shown, because this would create a vacuum in between the departing water and the remaining water.

I literally found out how this works yesterday, so I'm here to tell you how you got it wrong! 😜 Your illustrations are of two completely different types of toilet tank. 1:02 Your side view shows a US style toilet where the handle opens a flapper valve in the bottom of the tank that just let's the water out downwards. But the inset diagram labelled "Graphic with more detail" shows a UK-style cistern, where the handle forces water up a tube that forms a siphon, as labelled, so there isn't a naked hole in the bottom of the tank like there is on the main image.

Why does the overflow tube in the tank where the water re-fills the tank not fill up with water?

The demo does not empty the entire toilet. I’m curious how that works.
    1. How water level is kept constant in a toilet after emptying all that were before.
    2. How (what force) it empties in the first place.

Can you make a video like this one but show the differences between the way the different types of toilets around the world work like you did American toilets? How does the UK toilet work with the American toilet?

Toilets are a crucial part of modern sanitation systems, designed to efficiently and hygienically remove human waste from homes and buildings. The basic components and functioning of a typical gravity-flush toilet are as follows:
    1. **Bowl:** The toilet bowl is the visible, open part where waste is deposited. It is usually made of ceramic and has a water-filled trap that prevents sewer gases from entering the bathroom.
    2. **Tank:** The tank is mounted above the bowl and contains water. It has a flushing mechanism that releases water into the bowl to carry away waste.
    3. **Flush Valve:** The flush valve is a large opening at the bottom of the tank. When the flush handle is pressed, it lifts the flush valve, allowing water to rush into the bowl.
    4. **Flapper:** The flapper is a rubber or plastic seal that covers the flush valve opening. When the flush handle is released, the flapper closes the flush valve, stopping the flow of water into the bowl.
    5. **Fill Valve:** The fill valve is responsible for refilling the tank with water after a flush. It is usually located on one side of the tank and has a float that regulates the water level.
Here's how a typical flush works:
    - **Flush Activation:** When you press the flush handle, it lifts the flapper, allowing water to flow from the tank into the bowl.
    - **Siphon Action:** The force of the water creates a siphon effect, pulling waste and water from the bowl into the drainpipe.
    - **Refilling:** After the flush, the flapper closes, and the fill valve begins refilling the tank with water. The float on the fill valve regulates the water level.
    - **Tank Ready for Next Flush:** Once the tank is filled, the toilet is ready for the next flush.
It's important to note that there are different types of toilets, including pressure-assisted toilets and dual-flush toilets, each with variations in their flushing mechanisms. Additionally, some toilets use a macerating system or a pump to facilitate waste removal in locations where a traditional gravity-flush toilet may not be practical.

Fun fact: in the streets before toilets was made people threw their poop out in the streets and it became a hazard for cities so they made toilets

8 mar 2022 11:26 pm est(utc-5):thanks . my mother use coloring-agent-liquid to check why sometimes toilet inhale but no one is flushing . and that coloring-agent-liquid enter toilet-bowl occasionally while no one is flushing , telling that piston is automatically-sending little water gradually to toilet-bowl until water-tank become semi empty then water-tank self-refill water while making inhale-noise . piston-renewal fix that problem . now toilet inhale again occasionally but my mother is in foreign country . so i want to know how toilet work.

Now to answer the mystery of why Americans feel like they need 100 litres of water to pee/poo in when Australia and the UK has proven you need a few cups full 😂.
The amount of times my hand ended up in water while pooing in America was beyond a joke.
