hello, Thx for talking about the background of QGIS: I asked myself this kind of question to know how it is organized. for "Raster Image Fill" : Have you thought to add georeferenced raster option or wms option? It would be practical to have the rendering of rasters while retaining the functionalities of vector editing (orthophotomosaic, inlay of raster zone on a vector map... rendering variable over time) You would need to have the link to the rasters to use in an attribute of the vector layer. I try with th python API (it seems doable) but it's super complicated for me to manage the display according to the scale with current settings.
