The bed defense is good for trios/quads beacause in solo/doubles your first aim is to eliminate your first rush so I would prefer covering the bed with wool or if you want to then use the wool + wood combination, you can use different types of defense method, I personally prefer the sandwich bed defense.
Pro tip :- If you want to stop any zombie from despawning but you don't have any nametag, you can give zombie anything which he can put in his hand like any one block, any tool, etc things in Minecraft
I think they are focusing more on casual gameplay instead of fast paced gameplay, as a pro, I can say that the best way to win is rushing as fast as possible, no iron swords, only wool and tnt, i use only blocks and tnt/fireball, tnt is only 4 gold in solo/doubles, don't hesitate, just side bridge.
