  • Today's video is a quick overview of MX4SIO, where if you have a ps2 that can boot special build of OPL, then you can boot games off a sd to microsd adapter that is inserted into slot 2. The project does require some soldering, see link below for a reference schematic.
    Enjoy!

What better way to start the new year than with a new PS2 project? If you have done MX4SIO yourself, please let us know how you like it and hopefully the project will get better as time goes on. Enjoy!

Pretty neat thing, but I personally would rather network load from a USB HDD. 2tb Drive connected over USB to a raspberry pi 1 running psx-pi-smbshare and connected to the PS2 over ethernet. It's a bit clunky but it allows much bigger storage capacities for much less money.

    • @tnaplastic2182
      @tnaplastic2182 2 ปีที่แล้ว

YES, some games which don't run via SMB, or have problems because of the IOP running on 100% via SMB occasionally, run better via MX4SIO.
The bandwidth is slower than on SMB, so an FMV *might* stutter via MX4SIO, while it doesn't via SMB.
It is way better than USB in pretty much any case/regard.

I’d love to see a portable PS2 made using this! Most use USB and deal with the slow speeds. I think a couple use a built-in raspberry pi as a “game server” over the network interface. This method is nice and compact, and would speed things up a bit.

@@tnaplastic2182 While maybe true in benchmarks, what you get is still slower than the DVD drive speed and only a margin faster than USB. Network loading becomes bottlenecked by the CPU in handling the network interface. Even in best case scenario (copy only) it was recorded to be around +- 3.3 MB/s. During gameplay, this penalty can be higher, at which point you are 1:1 with USB transfer speeds. Not enough to alleviate FMV stutter in some games, and not enough of a noticeable improvement over USB to consider sacrificing power to “run a raspberry pie server”.
Benefit is in storage size by hosting games on a server. Just my 2 cents.

      @@Vans_WW Yes, 28MBit/s on a video on my channel... I know... ;)
Yes, the bottleneck is the IOP.
"In best case scenarios..." You forgot to mention "in-game", but it seems obvious that you talk/write about that!
UDPBD is less dependent on the IOP and could yield 12.5MiB/s (100MBit/s)!
Access times are faster on any storage compared to discs though and that IS very noticeable!
I agree, that "SMB" puts a lot of "load" on the IOP and that it can even dive a game's performance BELOW that of any of the other devices!
That usually doesn't occur on FMVs though!
It rather sounds like your setup (or the setup where those issues were present) is running in 10MBit/s mode!

While this is cool as shit, I'd like someone to make a PS2 ODE (Optical Drive Emulator). That way you could you still load games off of an mSD card, but you'd be replacing an aging DVD drive in an older PS2 and games could still be played (and it'd be simpler and cleaner even if soldering is required internally)! The PS1 has one as does the Dreamcast and GameCube... I'm sure someone'll figure it out for the PS2 as well!
