Always assumed it was in g with the capo on the second fret. But the second guitar playing in a, standard tuning, sounds really good listening to it with a fresh side of ears. That plus the fact The Beatles typically played the same chords and different positions to give their songs a certain feel, having the a shapes along with the g shapes would give it an unmistakable originality. I think you nailed this, I'm not surprised.

This song has a LONG history-so old it was a thing Paul played on piano as a teen on those family gatherings shown in his LET 'EM IN video. it was just an instrumental then until years later.

I like doing this one solo on my 12 with Capo, and do the intro just strumming it and leaving those ascending lines for my invisible partners.....
According to session notes, Paul, George, and John all played guitar (no bass). I assume Paul is also playing G shapes capo II, since he still uses the G shapes, though without the capo. George is also playing G shapes at capo II on the 12-string, though I'm not sure if he plays through the whole track or just plays the lead parts. Which leaves John playing the first position A shapes.
I love how instead of just putting a capo on the guitar you're holding, you pick up a different guitar with the capo already on ;) I know, it saves time on adjusting the tuning (in theory at least)
You are correct one the 12 string theory back in highschool 60s something 😆 me and my guitar buddy worked that song to a T thats lifting the turntable arm finger slowing the vinyl😂😂 and came to the 12 string capo'd f sharp standard tuning we worked out alot of Beatles tunes back then chicks were enamored 😂😂😂
Back in the day when I played this I always played it on my six string no capo with G C D I guess it suited my voice better and mixed the solo notes into my strum just to be as loud as I could. Sounded right to me. That said nobody ever said , "hey man your playing that all wrong"

The intro almost sounds like a gut or nylon string, which would suggest George again, but could be Paul on his Texan. Don't think Paul had a lefty 12 at this point.
It would be great if there were documentation or George or Giles Martin or maybe Peter Asher chipping in with their take on who played what. When Rubber Soul came out, my garage band buddies conferred and said that couldn't be Paul on classical or 12 string.....he was a bass player after all and the Seen A Face tracks were uptempo and intricate. Little did we know that McCartney played as much lead guitar as he did the bass, just that we wouldn't learn that until much later... ...lol.

Just an FYI, during the Wings Over America tour, Paul was on a 6 string Ovation Custom Legend while Denny played a 12 String Glen Campbell Artist. They both played the song in G (no capo), with Denny play the lead... straight up the low E string.

The Beatles had four guitars, a 12 string, a six string and then one electric guitars and a gut guitar according to Hal Leonard’s complete Beatles. Ringo played the maracas.
Don't put a lot of stock in Hal Leonards complete Beatles. It was four guys of Asian decent deciphering all the Beatles songs . They are way off on many of them . As JJ could tell you there is no Electric Guitar on this song.

Hey dude, The next time you get on a Jimmy Page kick, what about breaking down something more unusual like, "Radioactive"? There might be some tapping in that song (the a-tonal part). Interesting to think how it might or might not have been inspired by Eddie Van Halen. I vote probably wasn't.

It suggests that that band was never meant to be anything other than a vehicle to keep the musicians active and touring. That sounds like an excuse to me for a project that didn't take off. Too bad.
I might have been too hard on The Firm. It sounds like both Paul and Jimmy viewed it as a vehicle to pull Jimmy out of a funk. If true, that sounds like a pretty good friendship, indeed.
I’ve just always played it with the capo on 2 for the same reason you noted; the sound of the solo’s finish. Also, JJ has giant elephant-ears. That’s why he hears so well and why we will never see his face. He’s quite hideous.

Yeah I think he moves it down to G because he struggles to sing in A but I’m not 100% sure.

My very favourite version of this is the live one by Wings when the late, great Jimmy McCulloch kicks in on bass and just drives it home. Played in G.

Makes sense. Maybe George played 12 string rhythm (including descending bits) on basic track and overdubbed the solo?

Great lesson. The only thing though is having a capo at 2 wouldn’t affect the frets the intro runs are played on.

Actually, Paul Rodgers played all the lead parts on Radioactive, including that atonal riff.
