Indefinite articles - when to use "een" in Dutch

It seems a rather basic topic, but believe me, countless of students seem to be struggling with the concept of indefinite and definite articles and when to use one or the other. The indefinite words in Dutch are easily recognizable: we either have “een” or nothing at all / nada / naught / niente in front of the word.

What about when it is about a profession or other things that can be countable at least in English? For example "Hij is (X) bakker." I know people contain multitudes, but how is it that "a" baker is uncountable?
