    I'm working on new study music - subscribe to my music channel to hear it when it's finished! th-cam.com/channels/mqK2G-3AL_WP5KffH_wqAA.html (or on Spotify: open.spotify.com/artist/2Qch08zdpJ5rMPkHqNU7Be?si=R8tb4i6aQJWEEq5DeVTFcw)
    Here's my 1% Rule log for this video:
    - Spent a lot of time learning new techniques in Lightroom and Photoshop for making better thumbnails. Can you believe I didn't know what the burn and dodge tools did before this?
    While I didn't have time to work it into this video, I started learning Adobe Illustrator this week. Next week's video will have some dope motion graphics as a result!
    What is the 1% Rule? Essentially, it's the idea that you should aim to get 1% better with each piece of work you do, instead of pressuring yourself to create "perfect" work. Over time, these 1% improvements add up as long as you're consistent. More info, along with my journal for all videos, here: thomasjfrank.com/my-1-rule-journal/
    P.S. - What other tricks do you use to get yourself to start your work?

      physically writing down what I need to get done today and how much time to spend on each of them helps me.
      although i have a little trouble when it comes to more learning-based tasks cuz you cant define exactly how much time it will take.

    Being in flow is an egoless state. Its when you're doing your work just for the sake of doing it with little concern about the end product. This frees you up to not only enjoy what you're doing but also helps you produce your best work.

    I can't even begin to describe how important the distraction journal is.
    I recently started writing "Morning Pages" to get my thoughts out in the morning, allowing me to trap my anxieties on paper. It's amazing how much clearer the rest of my day is when I accomplish this.

    • @eljefe4300
      @eljefe4300 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      What do you actually write down?

    • @neverendinchaos4800
      @neverendinchaos4800 4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      @@eljefe4300 I actually do this a lot. My mind finds literally anything to distract myself with (e.g. typing this comment). I guess, I just write down whatever that important thought was that I had and then I get back to whatever other thing I was doing. Sometimes, I come back to what I wrote and flesh the thought out a little more so I don't forget the full idea, you know? I write down literally anything that is distracting me, so it doesn't have to stay in the back of my mind, waiting to be forgotten. It could be a random song that popped into my head that I wanted to listen to; some other task that I just remembered I had to do; some cool video that I wanted to watch. Literally anything. It's all about relieving your mind of having to remember the million other thoughts that are spinning around in there as you're trying to focus on the task at hand.

    I guess I'm in a flow state when watching youtube.

  • @its.dragaton
    @its.dragaton 4 ปีที่แล้ว +51

    i think this is why i'm so good at getting stuff done when it's on a whim and i didn't really think about doing it beforehand. like the other day, i painted an entire wall in my room. but the day didn't start out with me wanting to paint a wall; i just wanted to dust and vacuum my room and that small task turned into the much bigger task that i normally would have had to psyche myself up to do.

    • @LaraNaomi
      @LaraNaomi 4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Totally! I find this as well. Especially if I start with the smallest piece of a puzzle I often end up finishing way more than I intended. Now I clean my house every morning for at least 30min simply because I wash my coffee cup after I finish it.

    • @monkiram
      @monkiram 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Yeah I notice this so much with cleaning especially. If I plan to clean, it becomes this huge overwhelming thing in my brain so then I procrastinate to avoid it which makes it even more anxiety-inducing and it never gets done. But if I happen to do a really small part of it one time, I usually end up happily spending the rest of my day doing that because I just got really into it. The mind is a strange place and mine rarely cooperates with what I want it to do.

    Great tips in here, Thomas!
    I'm a game developer and, whenever I sit down to start coding something, I always get that mental barrage of "things I must think about", like you on your music production endeavours. I start thinking about the code, the project's architecture etc and usually get paralyzed, just sitting there, thinking, and going nowhere.
    I'll try to adapt what you said about just "start messing around" to "just start writing some code", so I can see a clearer picture of what I'm trying to do. Thanks!

    THANK YOU! This is something I’ve been looking for for so long. I always felt so lazy but I knew my intention was strong. Now I’ve got a question for you that you mentioned at the end....how do you deprogram your skill, ease off the accelerator when you “know too much”? I’m an actor, and I know I can “sound real” but I know the most value I’m gonna get out of it, and hopefully an audience, is gonna be by going into it without skipping steps that I pretty consistently do skip frankly. Hope that makes sense...great content as always!

      Yes. What also helps is writing comments, line by line what you expect to do/what should happen then remove the comments as you implement it.

    Hey, Thomas. Great as always.
    However, I think these three tips are very useful for creative work, but they don't work so fine on other kind of tasks. Maybe for long projects they do, but if we are talking to trick your mind to get a lot done everyday (specifically non creative tasks), maybe there's something missing.
    Anyway, the non-Newtonian liquid example is a good metaphor. I think that the 'warm-up' strategy work in any circumstance.
    Thanks a lot for your work. I love your videos
