This is something I've wanted to do for a while, Halloween season felt like the perfect time for its release. GMK is one of my favorite Godzilla films, so I decided to revisit it with a fresh, in-depth look - closer to the style of my Showa Era videos. This is not a re-upload; it's a 99% new experience, with just a few early parts carried over from the original. So dive in, enjoy, and Happy Spooky Season! Notes/Corrections: 53:23 - As some have pointed out, the subtitles were based off the dub which changed the lines. More accurately, the woman interprets his good wishes into Japanese, and doesn’t add the “you’re all going to die.”
I'm Japanese, but I watched your video while translating it. It was really wonderful. I've never seen a video in Japan that researched every detail of a work so deeply. When the footage of Shinohara Tomoe's past TV shows and Niyama Chiharu's commercials came on, I couldn't help but laugh at your thoroughness and enthusiasm. Thank you so much for making this video. If I may add, a woman evacuating from Yokohama is smiling carefree and waving her hands, saying to the military, "Soldiers, do your best! I believe in you!" I feel that this scene is an irony towards the Japanese people who have forgotten the horror of past wars and cannot even imagine the tragedies that will occur in the future.

44:39 Thanks for including this part. Her Baragon roar is adorable, iconic, and a great piece of behind the scenes lore. Keep of the good work, Bill. Your Godzilla movie deep dives give justification to the existence of the internet.
Thank you so much for citing my book throughout your video. It's highly appreciated. Your video brought back a lot of fun memories. One thing: There's a story floating around in the West claiming that Tomoe Shinohara was used in GMK to elicit cheers from audience members who find her TV persona annoying. This couldn't be further from the truth. Director Kaneko used her in GMK due to her popularity with young women, and he even used her in his next film, "To Sing of Love." Moreover, Kaneko greatly respects his actors and wouldn't think of degrading them in such a way. I hope this recently created rumor gets laid to rest quickly. Lastly, that quote in David K's book about the time Sano, Chiharu, and I watched KKvsG before shooting the Digital Q scenes originates with me. I'm pretty sure it's in my book too... It might come across as a bit of mansplaining by today's standards, but that wasn't how Sano expressed it to Chiharu. A lot of males in Japan also don't understand this part of Tsuburaya's tokusatsu philosophy. He would have defended Tsuburaya in the same way to a man as he did to Chiharu.
Thank you so much, Norman, and even more importantly, thank you for writing your book. I could feel a deep sense of sentimentality in your reflections on your time behind the scenes. Also, thank you for clarifying the Tomoe Shinohara scene and the Sano story. I have a bit of a silly question: did Kaneko ever mention if this Godzilla was meant to be the resurrected version of the original, or are they supposed to be two different creatures? That was always the one thing about this movie I wondered about. Regardless, thank you again for watching and leaving the comment!
@@BigActionBill I figured it would have been a crime not to write the book considering how forthcoming all the staffers were (and still are). Just wish it hadn't taken me 20 years to write. lol You know, I never thought to ask Kaneko your question. My instincts tell me it's a different Godzilla but I'll ask him next time I see him.
Just finished watching every Godzilla movie in chronological order, and these videos exploring the history of each film in such depth have been an amazing supplement. Incredible content!
@PopSmashCult yeah but if you put your ear up to Shin's head, you would hear a dial tone (not much happening in there). With Gmk Goji, you would hear the gnashing and wailing of angy souls.
We're down to one Godzilla suit actor😢😢😢. I had the opportunity to meet all three at New York Comic-Con back in 2015, but a portion of my spending budget was spoken for so i ended up only meeting Haruo Nakajima🙏🏾🕊
GMK is my favorite Godzilla movie of the millennium era Godzilla movies. Bill, if you’re reading this, I enjoyed your updated video on the history of this movie providing new facts about the production. Keep up the excellent work, you haven’t disappointed me.
BAB-Can’t thank you enough for your content. Seriously, this is incredible work you’ve done here! Also, GMK is my favorite G-film, so I could watch information on it 24/7, and yours is by far the best!
I’m glad you pointed out all the numerous parallels to Godzilla ‘98 in this film. There are so many. But what I like about the fact they referenced the ‘98 film so much is they actually tried to make all of the references important to the plot. They aren’t shoehorned into the film, but deliberately there to show how the ‘98 film could have used these plot points better.
The one nice thing that came about with the weird way the movies got paired for blu ray release in the USA is that GMK, and Godzilla Against Mechagodzilla came paired together. You can prefer one over the other, but they are, without question, the two best of the Millenium era.
Always love seeing expanded videos from you, though I am a little sad to see all the older Goji videos you’ve made go away.. have you ever thought about throwing them in a playlist where all the old/outdated ones can be preserved? It’s been an amazing ride seeing how this channel has evolved over time and how the Godzilla content and deep dives has continually been flushed out further and further, and I’d love to be able to turn back the clock to see those old videos again and truly see how much they’ve changed
That’s a good idea. I think if I ever did something like that it would be in the form of me just pointing out the mistakes in them maybe lol. I appreciate you watching my older stuff and I hope the product has improved.
I do miss the "Ohhh noo noo noo... HAHAHAHA" meme from when Godzilla tailslaps Baragon and sends him flying in the old version of this video. That was a gem haha. The product has definitely improved Bill! But as with most progress, some things are lost along the way.

Even though they were heavily edited I still had an absolute blast watching them which held me over until I was able to buy them on dvd in 2004
I remember being surprised at a lot of things in this movie: Ghidorah as a "good guy", the supernatural element and the "vengeful spirits of war victims" angle. It was a big swing and while it's not as brilliant as, say, Minus One, it comes off pretty well.
This is one of the greatest Godzilla films of all time! I actually felt bad when The Big G gave Baragon the worst beat down I've ever seen! Thank you for this video!

I wish Kaneko was given another chance to do a big budget Godzilla film, I'd love to see what he comes up with.
This was one of the first Godzilla films I've ever seen so it holds a soft spot in my heart. It is so different compared to the others and to take Ghidorah and put him in the protagonist/neutral role and make Godzilla the villain is a very interesting choice
44:50 Even today the motion capture actors from Godzilla King of the monsters roar on set. You could see the 3 king Ghidorah actors and Godzilla actor growling and roaring in bts videos on TH-cam and the Blu ray. Imagine playing a monster but you can’t make sounds, it’d probably take some of the fun out of it.

Great video, this particular Godzilla was so scary to look at, so 'cold' - the first time I saw this film Godzilla freaked me out a little!
My thanks good sir. Gmk is my favorite of the millennium series possibly of all time
Thanks for the video. Perfect thing to kill time.
Just popped in to hear Ota's BTS roar
13:28 I always thought this was a callback to the opening credits of Ghidorah, the Three Headed Monster, which opens with a look at Ghidorah's scales.
It’s funny I was thinking about that too, I would probably roar too…or at least silently roar to myself 😆
