1973 V12 Powered Peterbilt 352 Cabover - Episode 12 - What a difference a nice rack makes.

  • In this video I go through step by step and show you how to set the rack on a big v12. The procedure is the same for any V series Detroit and mostly the same for an inline as well, setting the gap on an inline is different however. A properly set rack will effect smoke output, slobber, heat, sound, everything. Watch as we clean up a lot of the smoke from this old v12.

I always loved how working on 71 series was almost the same from N series to V series. 4- 6-8 and 12. I miss those day's when I could fix my own truck without a computer/laptop and scanner. Nice work.

For some one that learns to drive on a cab over 12V71 what your doing is just the best thing with this pice of history. People think it sound cool have absolutely no ida how cool they sounded on damp night in the fall when the air temp is 40 pulling hard with 100,000 on deck on a twisty hilly road there nothing like it. Theses were the first long life motors the trucking industry hade back then. Theses motors never worked hard on the NY state Turnpike grossing 80,000. It was like you hade 1/2 a lode on. Most motors got 350,000 mills were needing a inframe back then. The 12V71 in are fleet were good for 600,000 or more but most hade a oil leak or to LOL I hope you keep up the good work and when you get it dun you get a chance to put a heavy load behind it there nothing like it the truck world. It somethings you will remember for as long as you live. Yes to days trucks get better fuel economy and pull better and last longer. But there sound in the world like working a buzzin dozen hard.

So my buddy who has the Hatteras boat with the 12v71 Engines has finally started the engine repair process. He found his old school Detroit mechanic who specializes in Detroit's. He works on a lot of industrial engines or has over the 40 year carrier and he said on one tugboat he worked on the captain complained of excessive oil usage. Well he went out to check on it and service it and found that one of the rods had come out the side of the engine block but it was still operating as if nothing was wrong with it. He said these 71 series engines are some of the best engines ever built in the world because they are so tough and durable. Its why the military used them for so many years too.

Great job tuning on the old girl! She sounds sweet! I drove a cabin over Pete double bunk like this one, back in the late 70's, early 80's, only it had a KTA-600 Cummins in it! Awesome truck, ran out of Phoenix to Yuma and the west coast, hauling produce to Borman's Market, Detroit, and back every week! Old girl rode like a Cadillac and never slowed climbing any mountain out West!

I think the reason GM wants you to do both racks independently is to avoid the adjustment of one rack influencing the other rack. So set them up separately and then hook them back up. I suppose there will also be a balancing adjustment between the 2 banks.
She runs smooth. It must make a glorious sound when going up a mountain pass with a fully loaded trailer.

Some times the buffer screw has to be readjusted to make a jake micro switch work correctly (instant plunger instead of slow/delay >>> jake shifting on steep hills the buffer plunger has to be on the cutting edge>> instant on a detroit like these) , some times a little drift helps pulling out with a heavy load on hills especially , if you turn her over backwards you only have 2 forward gears low and high reverse 3 if you split LOLOL (seriously>> emergency stop immidately and may have to put in gear an use clutch to kill it , just do it PDQ ! ) . We use to set a 671 to pump off on 2400 the engine starts its climb a little easier an stronger . A 671 is suppose to use a quart of oil in 8 hours , slobber tubes an all , the 12V should use a little more . The last 671 I drove was 250HP c65 and advanced cam timing ,this type engine here . The 350 an 400 cummins will haul 40 ton of coal no problem , the 800 mack 65 rears large off road coal will haul 45-50 ton 300 or 350 mack with a 13 speed perfect set up , the large long coal bed on an old cline/isco about 60+ ton automatic with retarder some manual , the older r35 euclids were a wickid sounding 12v no muffler the pipe goes up into the dump body to heat the dump body had 2 single bug eye head lights . Dont listen to old men like me we dont know nothing .......

You are doing it right , the exhaust looking good and it sounding good , V8s You do the same ,
Back in the late eighties I had a 1971 cab over freightshaker with a V8 detroit ,
what I done pulled the engine out of the truck stripped her down and I took all of the 3 peice pistons out and what I done I put cross Head pistons in it , they are Turbo pistons They are a one piece piston , what I done made me a 400 out of a 318 , Mann that bitch pulled good , I ran it for 2 years , Sold the truck got back into the Cummins Engines , You can do a lot with them for power , When I was a kid I would take the small boar 262 Cummins and what I would do is put 335 kits in them and make a small Cam 335 and they were bad ass when you was done , They would throw 2 feet of fire out of the straight stack Shifting gears , But you definitely had to watch your Pyro In the mountains ,

Bus Grease Monkey is another TH-camr that loves 2-stroke Detroits and appears to have a faithful following of owners whose rigs he's straightened out. I've no idea if what he does is the correct way or not and I'm not implying at all that you do anything wrong, I just know that it's impossible to have too much knowledge and camaraderie is a good thing. I'm positive that there are some commercial marine guys out there that know their shyt, they are probably the last of those who "trained under" the older timers when these DD's were "everywhere".
Nothing more, nothing less and I have no hidden agenda, motive, experience, or connection. ;)
