- The way I see it, in order to make cuts (rough, smooth or otherwise) one needs a decent cutting tool to do so, and being able to accurately grind and verify one's tools is therefore a good thing. I'm too cheap/broke to buy a real optical comparator, but when I started thinking about it, an old school overhead projector has some of the same elements. As far as I'm concerned, for home shop use, it seems like using one with some custom projector screens can give us home shop users, with a little patience, much of the functionality of a real comparator.

This is the style of ideas I like very much. Usung things for something they are not made for and make it work.

Hi Everett, great idea, simple, cheap and effective. You could improve cheaply by using plain white paper on the garage door, and then printing your grid and angles etc on an acetate (transparency), this way you can throw the tools on the projector glass anywhere, and move the acetate round easily to fit the projected image. Beware of the shadow you will cast though. Cheers, Jon

Thanks Jon, I hadn't thought about the printed acetate idea - will have to try it too. I was just thinking that by making a larger screen it was easy enough to make it by hand, but will have to look for a good pattern to laser print onto a transparency sheet. Some came with the projector, it's worth a try.

With a more steady base it would be much less finicky, but I am still no less cheap, lol. Just figured it was worth a try and it turned out that it does indeed work!

Hi Everett.. The Everett Comparitor is a great Watch . . Lol .. there should be lots of overhead projectors in second hand stores lol or if you are really desperate, you can use a camera on your mobile, same as when you are trying to read a streed directory when the streets are just toooo small to read. Lol yep take a picture blow it up bigger & read .. 😆. Thanks you have a Winner.
Thanks Ted! Crazily enough, it took a while to find one locally as they are so "old-fashioned" that few places still use them. I still love the simplicity of them though. And it also will be handy to project and trace pencil lines on my son's bedroom wall to make a mural someday, lol

Way too cool and thinking outside the box is always good. In may years a construction, we used this older method to display architectural drawings in job meetings. Thx for bering me back 30+ years,,,,Bear!

Lol, I used them in school too, they used to be more common. They fell out of favor but are still handy for many things.

Thanks John, I just don't have the cash nor space for a real one, so even if it has some limitations, it gets me in the ball park given my level of work.
Absolutely love it, maybe look into a printing out transparency stuff, donno if that would work with a home type printer, but those , fusion360 to lay it out, and some 20tpi all thread, you could make a sliding table scenario to move and measure stuff as well
Thanks DJ, this is partly why I was putting it out there to hear what other people would have for ideas. I started with the screen on the door having the marks on it as it is easier to get some accuracy on a larger scale when doing "manual arts and crafts," lol. I hadn't thought of printing transparencies until getting comment suggestions for them, so will now start looking into those as well. The only issue I would see with transparencies is that they will be on a slightly different focal plane from the tool bit unless it's upside down. Granted, that isn't a big deal either, I just have to think backwards then, lol!
Haha, great idea. You could mount the grid on something that rotates to simulate the rotating screen on a comparator. Even with degree increments. Great stuff
Thanks Rupert, that idea of a rotating screen is interesting, I might have to try making one. At least with the larger scale of doing paper "arts and crafts" it allows for a bit more leniency than trying to make a small reticule scale like one sees on a real comparator screen.
it would be real slick on a X,Y Slide too. Maybe just some cheap threaded rod. 😈@@EverettsWorkshop

Thanks! Yeah, these things hit landfills about 15 years ago en masse but you can still catch the odd one in the classifieds or at a garage sale/thrift store. Not as elegant as an optical comparator but with some fiddling becomes useful for us home guys.

I like it. As you mentioned, optical comparators are not in the budget for us home shop guys. They always seem to go for big bucks. I settled on one of the microscopes from Bang good. It works fairly well for what it is.
Thanks Tom! Yeah, the real deals are really expensive, lol! I haven't tried one of the digital microscopes like yours, but they seem to work well as an option too. I just saw this one on the online classifieds and wanted to try it, lol!

Somehow, almost all of my subscriptions we're removed, and I've had a long-term health problem that kept me from pursuing some of these issues.
Recycling/repurposing the projector is a great idea, if I had seen this a few months ago, there were three of them in our local "recycling" yard...typically, minus lamps, but one could probably 'repurpose' a headlight bulb (100.w halogen, or even an LED bulb of some type ... if they need a reflector, usually soherical, maybe recycle a bulb from a projection tv ...

Here (Sweden) that optical thing is named "Over head projector". I wonder, couldn't a loupe do the same, for Your eye?

The over head projector used transparent sheets having drawn, painted messages on it.
There was a predecessor to it that illuminated normal documents, books, paintings... and showed the image on the wall. Not sure but was the name panopticon? It was a heavy beast usually placed on a table, on wheels, swivelling wheels.
Thanks Stefan, I've seen the loupe type portable cheaper loupe-type "comparators" but even they're more money than I want to spend, lol. I'm happy with how this setup works, now I just need a tool grinder!

Fantastic idea! You can pick these up cheap from schools that are destined for remodel. Some times free if there are a bunch of units.
Schools being remodeled are all about upgrading into the newest and “best” tech for teaching. So anything old is almost always dismissed as obsolete.
My 2 cents If it was good enough for me and my parents its good enough to teach the next generation, but whatever have fun with that new 4K projector that craps out in 3 months and is too complex to fix. Those old projectors just need a light bulb lol.

Thanks Dave, it was a crazy idea I had this spring. Just took till I had the time and space to give it a shot. They do need a small amount of shelf space to store, you are right about that. I don't remember, did you go the tabletop microscope route? Journeyman Randy did, those are smaller.

Lol, I don't claim to be a genius, but as I'm not making Space Shuttle parts, this method does allow me to verify my tool angles for things like thread forms though!

Thanks Terry! The grid is actually 6 printed sheets glued together and taped to the old realtor sign, lol. I may make custom sheets down the road if this screen gets screwed up.

Forgot to mention: you might be able to find a shorter focal length lens, or use a mirror (front surface, ideally) to 'fold' the light path to use it in less soace
That is a thought - I don't have much for other lenses this size kicking around but one never knows what can be found at garage sales or auctions, lol!
