Very good presentation of the Pen-F. Great jazz background music; fantastic!
Thanks - Yeah, nice music :) Great Artist
I hope there will be a Pen-F mark II. That would be a must have - just like a new GX-8/9 would be a priority. But, for now my GX8 and E-M5 mark III are perfect for my needs.
No change on a PEN-F II, well, certanly not with the same looks.
If they do so, it will be another great classic frame, and a M43 new sensor. Which is not likely for some years.
There will be one, once they have their product line in order and upgraded. My bet is for 2028/29
No chance of a Pen F Mk 2, Olympus wouldn't do it and ,if considered in 2024, would face overwhelming competition at a ,relatively, high price point.
Hi Grant, great to see you pulled the trigger on this. Look forward to the Gx9-Pen-F comparison.
Got mine just before Christmas and loving it! Very versatile and capable small camera.
Paired with the 14mm 2.5 and the 20mm 1.7 you basically get two Ricoh GRs in one camera. I do not own the 20mm but the 14mm is sitting on my camera a lot recently. Nice compact setup for a every day companion.
Glad to see the pen-f is getting some love! I bought a nearly new copy myself a few months ago for travel and street photography as well. That Panasonic Leica lens looks great on it. It'd be great if OM System released an updated version (not skimping on look and materials of course)!
Great video! Thanks! Yes please to a video on Grainy black and white. I'm trying to decide how I feel about it on my Olympus.
I own a Pen F since 2017, a total workhorse! I hope Om System would realese a Mark II of this model with premium features as a flagship for the Pen line. They still use Pen F as promo on the website so hope never dies.
The Olympus menu system is good for me. Combined with the super control panel and button customizability, works well for me.
How long have you had the PEN-F? I found it took about six months of use to explore. It's capabilities are quite different to other Olympus cameras. That knob on the front is not just Art and Scene filters but colour and b&w profiles. They can be used for film stock simulation but can be used to boost e.g. the blues so it can see violet as a Lumix does (Ollies cannot reproduce violet). This does make it a jpeg monster and that can be Marmite (or is that Vegemite) but its image quality can certainly rival the G9. Just don't ask it to shoot video, it can but ... Lumix. Its 5-axis IBIS is one of the best, 5.5 stops is it, one more than the related E-M5ii.
Lack of body grip. L-plate, no, heavy, and clunky. Half case with an aluminium skeleton sheath between leather and cloth, yes, lightweight and looks good. A nice bulge to hold on to like on the also related E-PL7
I do wish they had given it a tilt screen but I suppose form and fashion won out over function. Flip out is for video, it's a stills camera.
Grant, thanks for the video. I am using a GX9 + 15mm lumix/leica lens, 12-32mm and 35-100mm lens for travel photography. Thinking about adding a Pen F. Can you switch lenses between the two makes and retain all functions such as stabilization, auto focus etc?
Awesome Stuff - No - you loose stabilisation and features like the aperture ring :)
@@grantrobertdavies you lose "lens stabilization" but not IBIS!
@@valdiskrebs1670 Yeah - I think he understands that chet...
I've just ordered one of these as I've been looking for something like this for a reasonable price to get back into photography. It ticks all the boxes for what I want really without spending the too much for the newer cameras now available. I need recs for a couple of lens options (prime) as it's coming with the zoom which will get me going as an all rounder but probably isn't great. Wondering if the 17 1.8 would be worthwhile?
I use the pen Epl7 on a regular basis its a little tricky changing shutter and aperture in manual mode, am dying to buy a pen f but waiting for the price to come down. I own dozens of cameras from 1956 to 2022, i use them all throughout the year and it keeps my photography mind fresh
It might be that you will wait forever. If there is no Pen F II on the horizon the prices will NOT go down. Cheers
For me it's the power it gives me to tweak the jpeg color profiles. Nothing comes close, except maybe the in camera LUT profiles you can upload to new Panasonics, but those are a pain to set up haha
Fun fact, Olympus baked actual real grain from film into the jpeg for monochrome 2 grain setting. That's why it looks so much like film or tri-x.
Mono1 is "natural". Mono2 is "grainy". Mono3 is "infrared".
Default for colour, Profile1 is neutral, all zeros, Profile2 is Kodak Kodachrome 64, Profile3 is Kodak Ektachrome. These can of course be re-written. Profiles are "out there" for various Kodak, Agfa and Fuji stocks, or brew your own.
Waiting for comparison video Pen F - GX9
Looking forward to when you can do a full review, Grant. It looks so cute!
Great choice! I also have both, the GX9 and the Pen-F, and both are great. I just wish the GX9 viewfinder was as good as the Olympus one, and I prefer the tilty screen as I shoot a lot of vertical images. Upgrade the Firmware to the last version if you haven-t already done that: It greatly improves the camera capabilities, especially Autofocus and gives you 20 Custom modes (4 for each front dial position). Also check on line: there are a lot of dedicated people who set down receipts for well known film brands, which to me are better done then what Fuji did (at least in the X100V).
Love my Pen F, I would like to see a "Why you don't need a X100VI buy a Pen F!" videos just to see the comparisons.
looking forward to seeing your pen-f-taken photos. Fascinating niche of the camera business. The Pen-F designers worked hard and created a body that has no visible screw heads. You might not even notice - I never saw an Olympus advert mentioning it - a mistake imho. Launched in Jan 2016 at US$1200 I read it failed to reach sales targets. Panasonic came along two years later and launched the GX9 at US$999 w/12-60mm lens and, I read Panasonic were disappointed with sales (despite the price). Neither had good C-AF btw ;) and perhaps that's why Fuji and Sony are still selling small cameras to this day.
The Olympus Pen - F was looking sexy until you pulled out the Panasonic Lumix GX-9 😅. Let's wait and see what comes out next in the Micro Four thirds world.
The Lumix G100 mkii is being released this month. They fixed the dodgy USB port and improved the viewfinder quality.
@@jackbeltane Sounds like the G100D ( released recently in Japan)
@@davidmccarthy6061 One can only hope 😅. Some Pro and compact camera bodies with new tech and features ( not just a repeat ) would be much appreciated.
@@jackbeltane Nothing was wrong with the viewfinder to begin with. I find it one of the best VFs in the class. Only thing missing is IBIS.
Congratulations brotha! What was the shutter count on it when you got it?
haven’t checked :)
@@grantrobertdavies how much did you snag it for if you don’t mind me asking 😁

Pleased to see you're already enjoying the Pen-F. The biggest thing I prefer on the Olympus cameras is the Super Control Panel. I've not yet seen a better implementation of a single screen where you get to see and change so many useful functions so easily. Biggest annoyance for me is the inoperability of the aperture ring on the Pana-Leica lenses (arrrrgh).
Yeah - It's a bummer the aperture ring doesn't work :(
I have a Pen F with the 12-40 2.8 PRO lens that pretty much lives on it. For me it is the perfect grab and shoot system. The image quality is very good and Olympus has always had great color rendition whether you are shooting RAW or jepg. I like the menu system while not totally intuitive it is logical, at least to me. If you want a totally obscure and horribly difficult menu try a FujiFilm GFX 50SII.
Yeah - I’ve heard things about the Fuji menues :\
Is it possible you meant “off” the bat? Your title page says “of”. Small error, very different meaning.
Yes - I better change that!!! Thanks :) Well Spotted
Loving your channel and your street photography journey (as i'm starting mine as well). Looking at both these camera to buy... what do you think of a GX9 vs Pen F video!!!!!!
Awesome Stuff :) Yeah - I gotta put that video together :)
Have both, imho gx9 Is a better camera and pen-f is sexiest. Gx9 seems Better on autofocus, better display articulation for street. Pen-f has Better evf and ibis. Sooc b&w jpegs are both lovely while on colour I tend to prefer Olympus but gx9 are not bad at all.
Which lens is it in your Video on the PEN? - a PEN-F-Lover asks….. 🙂🙂
That is a 20mm f1.7 :) Lumix

Hi, what is the lens you have on the Pen F in this video?
The Panasonic Lumix 20mm f1.7
I'd love a Pen F, mate. But 13 hundred for body alone. No way.
Yes - I had to sell off some assets to get it…
@@grantrobertdaviesI got one with 17k shutter count, a little scuff for 500 US $. I don't have the original packaging and the small flash, but I have everything else and a spare original battery. Also all the leather trim is original. You can find good deals if you wait for them. 1.3k US$ is a lot, and in my opinion is not worth it.
Thanxx 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
WOW - NO, Thank You!!! :) Much Appreciated :)
@@grantrobertdavies Thanxx for your videos‼️👍🏻👍🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
40mp PEN F with OVF / EVF hybrid would make the photography world explode right now. 😂
