I remember seeing the local news talk about E3 that year. They mentioned that Sega showed the Saturn which was now available to buy. Before that point I was already planning on buying it in the fall for Daytona and Virtua Fighter. When I saw it was available, I immediately called Toys R Us to see if they had it. Went and bought it. The games I had at launch were Virtua Fighter, Daytona, Clockwork Knight, and Panzer Dragoon. I know VF and Daytona were flawed, but I was happy to play them at home. Spent a lot of quarters playing them in the arcade. Loved Panzer Dragoon!! This video brought back so many good memories from that time. I know you put a lot of time and work making these videos. Thank you for making this one.

Panzer dragoon is great - a well designed linear on rails game with the unique 360 attack had shown how well a game can hold up. It was on rails but also a sort of light gun too when looking around.

Golf games released back in the day were always "Dad games", titles you'd show to your old man to convince him into buying you a console as it had something that would appeal to him :D
BTW if this does well, you should have a look at the September 1995 release of Saturn games, as pretty much all of those were meant to be launch titles for the console before Sega brought it forward. A console with TWO sets of launch games :D

Also, golf games were pretty typical software for PCs to run as an attract feature in places like Best Buy and other tech stores. Showing off how "real" a golf game looked and played on a particular setup helped push one brand's monitor over another or graphics card, etc. Occasionally a baseball game like Hardball III would be loaded on floor models. I'm sure across the pond you lads had your share of football/soccer games common to Windows machines in the mid 90s

Playing Panzer Dragoon for the first time was a bit of a magical experience for me, which is weird because I didn't own a Saturn or play this game until 2009, but something about the music and visual style instantly convinced me that the Saturn was a keeper in my collection. It has since become the console I have the most games for. Personally I also like Clockwork Knight and it's sequel a lot as a simple playthrough and Daytona has a great soundtrack though I don't particularly love it.

This was the first console I was able to buy on launch date. I know that the early release gets criticized a lot, but I was happy as can be to walk into that Software Etc and grab my shiny new system and games on that day. Yeah, VF and PD were the definite standouts. PD in particular, was a great surprise and a true gem. VF was definitely the first true 3D fighting game (that worked) as we know them today, even thought that there were some craptastic earlier experiments. Sega understood early on that solid high frame rate is key.

I was too young to enjoy the Saturn back then and when I discovered it now, I loved Daytona. I don't care much about good graphics (why else would I play Saturn in 2022!?) as long as the framerate is stable. And the racing content is just more and better than on RIdge Racer in my opinion. It's not Sega Rally, but for 1995 I think it's a wonderful game!

Virtua Fighter was about the same way for the time as daytona... not terrible, but with VF Remix and VF2 also on the system it definitely became obsolete rather quickly. I guess in hindsight VF should have been in a higher screen resolution, visual sharpness is one thing that enhances the aesthetics of flat shaded polygons. Worked well in Tobal on PS1, that trade off with textures.
Not the worst list of launch titles but to me only 50% of them actually make me excited about the SS. I think Panzer Dragoon was the best in the lot, new game that showed off the hardware quite well.

I was such a huge Sega fan that I considered the PlayStation an oddity that likely wasn't going to last especially after playing Panzer Dragoon first. My PlayStation sat in the corner of my room for 3 days while I played nothing but Panzer Dragoon. Of course my opinion changed fairly quickly as the first game I played for the PlayStation was Ridge Racer and wow was it breathtaking. By mid 1996 Sony outpaced the Saturn in every way possible.

It was Sega overall, with releasing the 32X a year before the Saturn came out, to releasing it 6 months early before most of the launch titles were ready to come out. Sega surprised everyone with an early release of the Saturn trying to get a jump on Sony and Nintendo. It didn't work and the Saturn flopped badly.

When you see the launch titles, to me, it’s a reason that I want either Microsoft or Sony (my preference being Microsoft) to buy Sega and give these new life. Sega have just literally just sat on so many fantastic IPs…and nadda. Even if something like Clockwork Knight was given a new coat of paint, it would be a massive win.
With what the current gen consoles are capable of, including the Switch, how good would a modern day Daytona, or Sega Rally II, or a new Virtua Fighter be? Hopefully one day.
I’d really like to see Sega do a deal with Arcade 1up, and do some old style Sega cabinets. Take my money!
All of those launch titles were fun. Now I know Pebble Beach is by no means a great game, but I still have a huge soft spot for it, and even now still pump out a round or two a month.
    Cheers

I heard from a Sega forum that you've been accepting games for a "video game museum" for the past decade. I'm curious where this game museum is.

The museum is a long term project and is very complicated. Plan to hopefully have an update end of the year.

Clockwork Knight 1 & 2 should have been a complete game but I believe they couldn't finish it in time for the launch?

I picked up the sega Saturn when it was new with Daytona and boy was I disappointed in that title. I compared it to ridge racer on the ps 1 that looked arcade perfect. It was a shame they released the system so early. The system did have a few games that were good. The trouble is the ps1 had a ton of great games on the system.

PEBBLE BEACH IS THE LOWEST?!?!?! Are you nuts? It give you only the best courses to choose from. No unlockables. All gameplay ready at boot!
Daytona USA: Also has the best iconic soundtrack at launch. And features the best hidden fighter in Fighters Megamix

to me --- tekken and alike feel like kiddo button mashers ( arcade ) - whereas VF games felt more like a sim style of that genre
