As an engineer, I love to see how your creativity isnt just limited to your art..but also transfers over to how you come up with creative ways to accomplish tasks (like the magnets on your water container). I'ts great to see the boundary between art/engineering/design/tinkering... all flow from a creative mind.
If there is one thing i know about actual Masters, is that they often create new tools out of necessity. Da Vinci apparently discovered this new red chalk and got raphael and michaelangelo to use it in their anatomy sketches, because it resembled flesh. So you look at these drawings by raphael and they use that same chalk, they were always tinkering.
@@DClean Yea. I have to wonder how many budding artists quit because of bad teachers. It's a shame. It took me a long time to get over some of the "teachings" I received. I'm not a good artist, I just do it for fun...........and I had to teach myself that art is supposed to be pleasurable.......not just a set of RULES.
You paint in dimly lit pubs? With a custom metal pencil case? Now that's badass. Seriously though, I'm watching this 8 year old video for the 1st time and it is informative and inspirational and a pleasure to watch. Thanks James! You really do have some of the best videos.
As someone who struggles to get most quality watercolor from the store on-sight I've noticed that the brightest - looking pans are so bright because of the chalk mixed in for cheapness. And the darker the pan is the more it's a pure, translucent pigment. Those pitch-black pans, so dark they require swatches, bring be a lots of joy. You know they will glow on paper.
Mr. Gurney. After watching dozens of your vids I find it so interesting how your relaxed and observational personality transcends so beautifully into your paintings.
I bought the full version of this "Watercolour in the Wild" off of Gumroad and found it worth the price. The palette and tools information you provide is great as well as the ideas for creating portable easels. I appreciated that you mentioned - when you were doing the Spadina greenhouse - the amount of time you had to work with. Often when we watch art videos it seems like the artist has a completely different set of laws of physics to work with than the rest of us. Knowing how long each step took was a great include.
You are the best. I ordered Color and Light which should land in the mailbox any day now. Look forward to diving in. Thanks again for all your good work.
I love that you have kept your bag simple, no expensive gadgets like some painters ! The Old palette you have has very large pans inside, its clearly an old W&N Tin, but I have never seen big pans like that. Would you share if this is a modification you made James ?
I wish I had seen you on State St. in Newburyport. I would have thanked you for sharing your knowledge and experience. I have learned much from your books and videos. I am working on a painting now and used your technique of making a maquette to work out the light and shadows. Thank you!
James please would you share the details of the gelatin medium, for watercolour paper prep, can I make this at home? Thanks for all your wonderful demos, they are trrific!
Mr. Gurney, I admire you very much and you are a great inspiration for my art. I walk around watercolor painting around my city and paint on postcard size paper, I try to be adventurous about my outings. A lot of people like my small size paintings and offer to buy them...but I cant let my paintings go; they are too priceless for me, and I think I'm wrong about this....Is this common with other artist painters?
Awesome work! I was curious as to what kind (or Brands) of tubes you use to refill your pans? Im dying to find better blues for my travel set! Thanks for sharing your beautiful art with the world!
Hello Mr. Gurney! I was wondering which pans you use in the larger watercolor palette. I've never seen pans in that size before! I love using large brushes these look absolutely perfect for it. Thank you. And greetings from Holland.
I think the large palette that he is using is a vintage watercolour palette. So it would be hard to find a duplicate unless you scour ebay for one. My reccomendation if you want large pans is to use the pans that gansai come in. Though the issue with that is that they dont come empty.
I really enjoy your videos and I have only one complaint the videos are not long enough is there any way you could make them longer that would would be great!!!!
My question is do you use the same brushes with each kind of paint ? I have a bucket of brushes for oils, one bucket for acrylics and another bucket of watercolor brushes. I keep them all separate. I would like to try the casein, but should I get new brushes to use with this medium ? Would it damage my regular watercolor brushes ?
When you told that you are friends with Tony Swatton, I was shocked, He is the best swordsmith or weapon make I have seen throughout the Internet/TH-cam
I am new to this and I am wondering about storing my brushes. I see you have a tin box for yours. I guess you must always be sure it is upright? Can the brushes get deformed or hairs wrecked if it isn't? I haven't seen a box like yours....is there an alternative way you would recommend? Is it okay to have them in an airtight box like yours? I am concerned as the new brushes I just bought were quite expensive!
Love your art James,.. I am enjoying a couple of your books ,.. But I have one question,.,,did you ever make that video on how to make your custom pochade box? Keep living the dream my friend!
+James Gurney I would hugely appreciate a video about how you made the pochade box, if you ever feel like doing one. I'd like to start regularly painting outdoors in a way that doesn't damage my back the way leaning over a sketchbook on my knee does, and this seems like it would be a really great thing to build with my dad. Love your work - thank you for being such a source of inspiration. - Mel
Ha, big question. This blog post on "Using Photo Reference" may not totally answer it, but check it out: gurneyjourney.blogspot.com/2009/03/using-photo-reference.html
Hello! I am in LOVE with the idea of using ink via the water brushes. I've gone to your blog to see the types of ink to use and they are either unavailable on Amazon or 50 USD for one bottle (makes my pockets cry sometimes lol). Do you have an updated or current list of inks that would be suitable for a beginner? I was just going to get the blue, black, and grey from Waterman since they are only 11.00 per bottle. How do you make your grey ink? Also, do you use your inks alone OR have you used them with your watercolors? Thanks :)
Wonderfully. The two go together perfectly. You can do a lot using watercolor as an underpainting and then gouache on top. Same goes for adding white gouache to watercolor to up the opacity.
i feel a bit embarrassed because i have 77 daniel smith tube, 66 sennelier tubes .... and never get the chance to use them so far ... you only paint using 12 colors and you painted well

I thought most artists allow their creativity free range. In all things. 💕

Amen to that, sir.
You have a very nice and calm way of explaining things. You are very very talented and I'm so happy that you share your knowledge. Thank you!
Not like the Art Nazi teacher I had in highschool.
James Gurney is an angel sent from Art Heaven

Mr. Gurney, you're my hero.
I very much agree. And I’m an old lady artist with a wild side. 🤷♀️🤩
Totally agree with you!
I’m literally watching this video everyday. Really love your minimalist supplies. You’re an inspiration for me
growing up in the Hudson Valley, it makes me nostalgic to see your paintings in that area. thanks for uploading this.
This TH-cam Channel is a secret gem. Very enjoyable
Mr. Gurney. After watching dozens of your vids I find it so interesting how your relaxed and observational personality transcends so beautifully into your paintings.
your a top artist...those sketchbooks will be worth a mint one day
Man you blow my mind every single time I've watched, you really truly are helping people become great artists.

Ahhh! The Dinotopia metal pen case is so gorgeous! And so many useful tips and ideas! Thank you :)
I love this kind of post, it's so vivid and real!
the production of your videos is very soothing. helps me to sleep and relax.
I love that you have kept your bag simple, no expensive gadgets like some painters ! The Old palette you have has very large pans inside, its clearly an old W&N Tin, but I have never seen big pans like that. Would you share if this is a modification you made James ?
I refer to this video a lot, and used it to create a gouache travel set for my car when I film on location. Thanks for sharing!!
such a calm voice i love this channel
You should make a video just flipping through some of your sketchbooks. The ones in this are so great.
I wish I had seen you on State St. in Newburyport. I would have thanked you for sharing your knowledge and experience. I have learned much from your books and videos. I am working on a painting now and used your technique of making a maquette to work out the light and shadows. Thank you!
you are one of my favorate artists on youtube ! i enjoy watching your painting
Just priceless, thank you so much for showing all of this to us!
I like the water container idea. Necessity is the mother of all invention and creatives know how to get it done. :)
That's cool with those tools to paint, you have creativity in you.
very inspirational james! love everything! I hope to do more plein air next year though i said that this year but definitely next year.
its the best drawing channel for me.
Me, with 4 shades of watercolour, 1 travel brush, a tissue and a lush sample pot for water: 👁👄👁
I love watching your video. I don't draw but it really calming watching your video.
Thanks!
I appreciate your generosity, thanks!
4:38 WHAT?! The Tony Swatton from 'Man at arms' himself? That's some rad pencil box!
Yes, THAT Tony Swatton. Super nice guy. He had his portable forge set up at an art event called Baby Tattooville.
Awesome! Portable forge haha. You should invite him for a plein air forging session xD
well no duh they know each other! they're all part of the pantheon of art gods
Thank you so much for making such an extensive list! This has made my life a whole lot easier
I particularly liked the tip of adding magnets to the bottom of the water container. Thanks
I love you Mr.James Gurney
Yes.....He knows what he is doing!
I just stumbled across your channel, and I love it.
You got a new subscriber 😁
Great video James. I'll soon start to do some urban sketching and your material list is really helpful!
Thank you so much Sir, so much helpful videos here on your channel. One of the best watercolor page so far!
James please would you share the details of the gelatin medium, for watercolour paper prep, can I make this at home? Thanks for all your wonderful demos, they are trrific!

You are kind to share the way you work
This is so beautiful
There was no #12 garden stick…
Thank you for giving a look in to your tool box.
Hey everyone. He has a list of the materials below the video. It’s on blogpost...
Belt pouch is a very cool sounding word for fanny pack.
Fantastic video! So many great ideas. Thank you!
Hello. I’m transitioning from 25 years of graphic design to painting. Can anyone tell me more about the gelatin sizing? Where to buy?

Betty-Jane, good question. I use synthetic brushes with casein. It might be better not to use any expensive Kolinsky sables with casein.
I really wanted to see you jam all of that into your belt pouch...
I love that you don't care about paints cracking
When you told that you are friends with Tony Swatton, I was shocked, He is the best swordsmith or weapon make I have seen throughout the Internet/TH-cam
LookingGlass, I agree. If you go to my blog and search "Viking Raid" you can see how we dressed as Vikings and raided an Ikea store together.
Aren’t your brushes damaged by being carried in a box like that?
I am new to this and I am wondering about storing my brushes. I see you have a tin box for yours. I guess you must always be sure it is upright? Sir, would you ever sell an original sketch book or perhaps trade a suitcase full of them for a house in France?
Aye yo, this guy is pretty cool. Subscribing🤗
One of my favorite places, Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum.
If you'd be so kind as to show us a time lapsed flip through of ur sketchbook!
ur work is amazing.
Master greetings from Medellin Colombia 🇨🇴, the paper you use because it doesn't bend with the water?
No, it's quite heavy weight and doesn't bend or warp much.
Love your art James,.. I am enjoying a couple of your books ,.. But I have one question,.,,did you ever make that video on how to make your custom pochade box?
Keep living the dream my friend!
Angelo Di Martino Hey, Angelo, I haven't done a detailed video of that yet--good idea. I'm still customizing and improving the prototype.
+James Gurney I would hugely appreciate a video about how you made the pochade box, if you ever feel like doing one. ouhh glad watching your vid..now i know material that i want to use..
He’s so lovely
just flickering through that book. you could make a 3 hour video of that and I would just sit there, gaping.
I have a question. Are those watercolor tubes and you just put it on the pallete??
Dinotopia metal case?!
Very nifty tips!
I have a very dumb question. why sketching and painting onsite instead of taking a photo and painting from it at home?
Thanks :)
+Vodka Fashion You can use any fountain pen ink, really. No need to get expensive inks.
Thanks for showing part of your work, James!
I have a question... Is it necessary to add fixative lacquer when one make a watercolor illustration?
No need to put a fixative or a varnish on watercolor.
Thank you so much!
This is the first time I've heard the term "urban sketching" what is it?
+muskndusk Check out the website "urbansketchers"
+James Gurney Thanks.
Sir, can you please tell me the name of this kind artbook? The name of the supplier.
Do gauche paints mix with watercolor???
Mark Haxify yes! I do it very often. Gouache and watercolor are practically the same only one is transparant and the other opaque.
Wonderfully.
The two go together perfectly.
You can do a lot using watercolor as an underpainting and then gouache on top.
Same goes for adding white gouache to watercolor to up the opacity.
May I ask where you can get the watercolors?
great stuff!
Hey James, did you consider making some Gumroad tutorials :)?
you deserve 1million subcribers
What kind of watercolor book are you using? Moleskin or something else? Thanks again for sharing
I've been using a Pentalic watercolor book lately. The Strathmore one is good too. Moleskine's OK but they've got competition.
What are the names of the colors you have? ^
Wondering if I need to buy the full video to find out what brand of sketchbook that is! (I'd love to but I am of the "starving" variety artist.
Linda Maddocks moleskine
Thank you!
Linda Maddocks he also has a blog where he goes into detail on all of these supplies and more it's linked in the video description
Gurney you're a great
i feel a bit embarrassed because i have 77 daniel smith tube, 66 sennelier tubes .... and never get the chance to use them so far ... you only paint using 12 colors and you painted well
Do you show your art on TH-cam? I’m a bit curious because I wanna see how people learn painting from James Gurney.
Great information thanks
very cool / inspiring
You're so cool!
I'm jealous you're friends with Tony. : 3
Those look like photos not paintings!! Wow!
Fine, thanks you share.
Him...*when I'm painting in a dimly lit pub* Me *so that's why my pictures suck. I've been painting in the wrong location*
Wow that's a lotta things!😝
this is the coolest shit i love it
💜💜
James Gurney ASMR!
Cool man
