@@cherrypancake9584they were on week two of their training. not really sure what you’re comparing them to but obviously they were still adjusting to the kpop format AND the feedback they got put it all into perspective. i’m sure they improved leaps and bounds by the end and once they debut (which they haven’t yet, not sure if you’re aware) i’m sure all the work they’ve put in to improve since this performance will be evident.

I’ll say it again because I think it missed you the first time but this show is setting them up. I’m honestly waiting for the week 3’s episode to finalise my opinion but as it is rn, these boys don’t even qualify to be a trainee let alone debut. The BBC has made multiple documentaries on just how grilling this industry is so for them to bring these five boys that lack the physicals, vocal range, synchronicity, coordination and overall polish is nothing but cruel. This isn’t helped at all by the fact that these boys only get 5/7 days to train (excluding performance and evaluation days) and the BBC drags them out once a week to “experience Korea” in what is an obvious campaign from Koreas cultural office. They aren’t there to be tourist, they are there to learn as much as they can(but sadly after reading the discription of ep3, it’s seems this unserious time waster isn’t going anywhere). With week 1 showing their trainers visable frustration/dissatisfaction and a network management meeting needing to be called over the state they where in, this alone should have been more than enough to put things into perspective. These boys are very talented but they’ve already lost 2 weeks and are yet to give a passable performance, the gas should have been stepped on already and if there isn’t any significant change by the half way mark I don’t see a reason to keep tuning in. If they don’t end up debuting I wouldn’t be surprised and if they do, I’d currently give them 2 years at the most because BG/GG’s have been dead in the west for almost a decade now and anyone who is looking for a K-pop level performance would not settle for this over K-pop.
@@cherrypancake9584 i didn’t miss your comment about this show setting them up- i just don’t agree with you. i understand that there are standards that trainees need to meet in order to debut in korea but i never once was under the impression that these boys were going to be at that level. not because i don’t believe in their talent or skill level but because 100 days isn’t enough for the so called “kpop trainee experience”. it might be for some kpop idols out there (countless have debuted with a few months of training) but even then- not only is much more expected from them (they eat/sleep/exist in the dance studio or train in other ways for hours on end) those same idols continue improving after debut because they’re able to access their company’s resources until the day their contracts expire. the way i see it- these five boys are in korea only for a taste and whatever fruits are grown in these 100 days of labour, i’m under no illusions that they’ll be at the highest level. i do agree with you that they haven’t put in the gruelling hours the way trainees in korea are expected to, but again- based on the first two episodes alone it is clear a lot of them struggle with the harsh criticism they receive and that indicates to me more than anything that they would have to spend a lot longer than 100 days to reach “the kpop standard”. as for the random shindong and kpop cowboy cultural escapades- i’m not even a little bit surprised that they’d include that in this “experience”. like you say: it’s probably a promotional move on korea’s front but it also makes for great tv and the bbc LOVES that kind of stuff. it does kind of give me whiplash because i know trainees in korea don’t normally get to have that kind of fun before debut; but again, it just goes to show that this isn’t meant to be the typical trainee experience. i will say: i’ll probably join you in your frustrations if they try and market these boys as kpop idols because in that case- it’ll feel extremely disingenuous. that being said, by the end of the show and once they debut, if sm is happy with them and their progress then honestly i couldn’t care less about their lack of training. based on recent interviews, it’s clear a lot of their mindsets have changed for the better since the start of the show and i have faith it’ll be reflected in their debut. forgive me if i come across as patronising or rude, it isn’t my intent. have a good day!
