I'm a huge fan of Bob Newhart's comedy and I had tapes of his as a kid, but Mike, you chose the worst example possible. The Lincoln phone call? Why not the Sir Walter Raleigh one? It has about twenty zingers and just keeps building. No idea why I'm pointing this out now, it's not as if you will go back and edit that in. Anyway, cheers for covering someone who I think is mosrtly forgotten as a comedian. Oh, I have to add, I dispute the claom that Rickles is funnier than Bob. Don is an old hack to me, whereas Bob is a much wittier guy. I will die on this lonely hill.

Yeah this is a bad analysis here mikey boy. bob newhart has some hilarious bits and impeccable comic timing. Part of his strength is reacting to things in a funny way. His sitcom put him as the straight man able to react to the antics of others and his routines showcased that by him acting out alternating lines of a scenario. this let the audience wait to see what was next and piece together the scenario like a puzzle based off of the context given to them in set up and punchline form. It is a really different way of structuring a monologue compared to most contemporary stand up and not in a bad or dated way. If mark normand did this instead of newhart, you'd kiss his ass. The submarine routine, bomb disposal routine and the retirement party routine are amazing. The button down mind of bob newhart and the album after that sold extremely well for a comedy album. Bob was a sitcom staple for years and was great on carson. Him and rickles were great friends. Bob newhart is also hilarious on his appearance on conans pre siriusxm podcast.
