- The new Bassnectar album, Cozza Frenzy is out, and EM caught up with its mastermind, Lorin Ashton, to talk about how he produced it. He discusses his gear and techniques, and focuses on the production of two of the songs.
Probably the best interview of any electronic producer I've ever seen. Excellent work!

i love the little things about bassnectar, at the end when he says thanks back to the guy, you can see in his face, he really means thanks, not just some snobby guy who blows you off, keep it real always bassnectar!!!!

Sorry, just hoppin' in here:)...you've BEEN to a Bassnectar show, right? The energy at a Bassnectar show is just incredible. Not to mention, you can feel said energy from the tips of the hair on your head down to the dead cells on your toenails. I can not imagine a BETTER feeling. I can imagine a DIFFERENT feeling, which I think Bassnectar and Skrillex are...different.

Yeah I agree. But after watching this interview I realize that Skrillex is probably using better (newer) software. And as far as energy/excitement goes, nothing compares to Skrillex; but to me, all three artists make quite different sounds making them hard to compare otherwise.

I liked the part where you said it was SUBJECTIVE. No one understands this, even I sometimes catch myself not following that rule. Also, Bassnectars music isn't that great, it's his concerts that are friggin amazing in my opinion.

Yeah, becauseBassnectar is WAY above either of those two.
Bassnectar knows how to put on the craziest most energetic show that have ever been.Not to mention Bassnectar's production skills surpass both of those, times infinity. Not just because he's been in the industry for more than 20 years, but because he genuinely know and loves what he's doing and expresses that in so many of his tracks. Skrillex and D5 are both seasoned producers, but their music just lack emotionIMO

I do get how much passion Lorin has, and it bleeds a bit more color through his tunes; at least more so than Skrillex. I dont think bassnectar has more emotion than D5, and D5/Skrillex production skills are very obviously past Bassnectar's. (mixing/mastering/sound design) Since D5 stuff isn't usually about raw energy, some Bassnectar surpasses the mau5. Bassnectar energy still has nothing on Skrillex (Skrillex releases so much more with superior sound design, Bassnectar prolly has better melody)

He's comparing two artists. Bassnectar makes Dubstep, Glitch Hop and Drum & Bass songs while Deadmau5 makes Progressive House, Electro House and a couple Dubstep songs.

Talking about Skrillex on a Bassnectar video should be forbidden.
Level of what? Fame? Obviously not. He makes totally different shit that isn't as widely accepted. But he's been at it like 3 times as long. To me, Bassnectar is on an excitement level 5 times higher than deadmau5. I could quite possibly fall asleep at a deadmau5 show....jk. But I guess I'm just not seeing how you are comparing them.
I don't think you understand just how good Bassnectar really is if you're telling me that Skrillex/D5 are better than Bassnectar... It's honestly not even a competition. Mainly because music isn't a competition... It's all subjective. But also because Skrillex/d5 are different styles of EDM than Bassnectar. Go listen to some old Bassnectar.:]

Production level, like sound design or mixing/mastering. Bassnectar synthesis vs Skrillex synthesis.. Skrillex hands down. And... Bassnectar and Skrillex/deadmau5 don't make very different shit, it's pretty close actually just Bassnectar sounds about 5 years behind. Deadmau5 shows are pretty slow, but I don't think there's nearly enough energy in a Bassnectar show vs. a Skrillex show
Sort of here out of curiosity but thought I'd chime in on the DeadMau5 / Skrillex? / BassNectar death match... From what I've heard of the 3... DeadMau5 us good but wants so badly to be DaftPunk. Skrillx just rips the english "dub step" style off to the max which is frankly... A boring genre... BassNectar however is a different animal all together and keeps it seemingly ever evolving... That's why I'm here out of curiosity and not on the skrillx video pages. YAWN... None are CevinKey though! ;-)
