    Interesting comparisons - I love the Star Wars influence on Phantasy Star, but I also love how well they did creating their own universe that *didn't* feel derivative, and felt, from my admittedly limited experience, on par with any of the universes from classic and/or famous sci-fi books.
    I also think having a female main character in PS is one of several things Sega deserves credit for; for a top-tier 1st-party game this was almost unheard of in the 8-bit era (or the 16-bit era, for that matter.) At a time when video game companies' marketing departments were laser-focused on marketing games to boys between the ages of 5 and 15, and were insistent that the boys buying their games wouldn't want to play as a girl, having a woman as the player's main character took some guts, and the foresight to see a time when girls (and women) would increasingly make up a large portion of the game-playing community. They did have some precent in this - Girl's Garden and Ninja Princess for their pre-Master System console SG-1000, which never released in the US but did release here in Australia and in New Zealand, featured female protagonists as well - but when the latter got a US release, its name was changed to Sega Ninja and the badass shuriken-throwing eponymous princess was changed to a bland, generic and male ninja. So, Sega wasn't completely immune to the drivel being vomited forth by those aforementioned marketing departments, which were no doubt largely staffed by white, besuited middle-aged men. Regardless, it shouldn't be underestimated how huge this was in 1987. I've always been on the Nintendo side of the divide but credit where credit's due.

    Phantasy Star is my favorite game of all time. The graphics, the music, the gameplay, everything was perfect for a 6-year old boy. I remember every song in my head constantly even now at 38. But I've always thought (later on, of course) that it related to Dune. Motavia is obviously Arrakis.

    Interestingly, I've always thought the devs must of looked at the early Star Wars concept artwork of Ralph Mcquarrie to gain some kind of influence.

  • @japanimationman4442
    @japanimationman4442 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Huh, I missed out on this video it seems. Lots of great of examples I hadn't really thought about, especially with the main characters. I really enjoyed this one.
    A few things you could add to the list:
    I think the Motavians have some visual similarity with the Ewoks, too. Maybe not much, but they always remind me of Ewoks for some reason. Probably because you never see what a Jawa looks like under those hoods so I drew a comparison between the fuzzy little guys. But they definitely have more Jawa to them. They even like to play around in old scrap piles in the later games.
    I always thought Parma/Palma was more like Alderan than Endor, but that's mostly down to Phatasy Star 2...
    And speaking of PS2, that's when the rebellion hides out on an ice world.
    Hapsby navigates your ship through space, just like R2 does with Luke's X-wing. (I guess you did kinda imply this in the video, but it seemed like it could use a bit more clarity)
    Alis's battle with the 'sacubus' enemy in her dreams can be paralleled with Luke fighting Vader on Dagohba.
    On a not Star Wars note, I think there's a bit of Dune influence as well with the sandworms. But this is really more the case in Phantasy Star 2. Dune (at least the book) talked about terraforming Dune into a garden paradise, just like what happens to Motavia. And there's a theme underlying Dune about people becoming weaker when they have no challenges to overcome, which is pretty much the central theme of PS2.

    • @hungrygoriya
      @hungrygoriya  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      These are all good points. I especially like the one about the nightmare and Dagobah. And I definitely should've elaborated more on R2D2 as well... It was my very first produced video and I think I've (hopefully) gotten better at finishing my thoughts!
      I haven't played Dune myself but I do appreciate your parallels to PS2 as well. Some great insights!

    I would also add that the Governor of Motavia, being a rebel sympathizer, with close ties to a Leah like charcater, would be akin to Bail Organa, the Senator from Alderan.
    However, i dont think Bail Organa was written about at the time, or if he was, wasn't that popular of a character in the SWU, but none the less, it is still parallel to Starwars.

    It was probably drawing a ton of influence from the original Ultima game, which was also a crazy mish mash of fantasy/sci-fi stuff heavily drawing on Star Wars. Ultima I had even more blatant copy of the landspeeder, had your hero wield a blaster, and at one point you fight actual TIE fighters. The last boss is also invincible until you destroy a gem, while in Phantasy Star you need a gem to PROTECT yourself from the last boss.

      The first two Ultima games were completely batshit fantasy/sci-fi works of hobo stew, literally everything a 21 year old Richard Garrot thought would be cool and just threw in. It wasn't until Ultima 3 where he mostly committed to the fantasy setting the series is known for.

    Now *if* they only add in characters (npc) named Biggs and Wedge the way Final Fantasy did, then the comparison would really something.
    Ironically, Phantasy Star series, though I haven’t played most them, is my favorite series after Dragon Quest. Of the Phantasy Star games, I first played the GameCube’s Phantasy Star Online, then GBA’s Phantasy Star collection, Phantasy Star Nova on the Vita, and finally all four first Phantasy Star on the Switch. Now *if* only they would port over Phantasy Star Universe games, especially Ambition of the Illuminous to the modern consoles including the Switch.

    Star Wars--particularly the original trilogy--is like a prism. The 'light' of so many earlier sci-fi, fantasy, and classic storytelling tropes and designs, were all funneled into a near-perfect singularity in Star Wars. Passing through that prism, that light is once again scattered into a spectrum of retellings and reinventions. Phantasy Star certainly takes inspiration directly from Star Wars; but one can also see the indirect influence of those earlier elements that came together in Star Wars as well as Phantasy Star.
