I’ve literally gotten to the point with resolve, partly because of you, so thanks lol, where instead of playing video games on my pc when I don’t have work to do, I just mess around in fusion and try and make the most complex motion graphics I can think of and I have more fun doing that in my down time then I ever used to have just playing videos games in my down time

additionally with audio, learn what True Peak is and pay attention to it. If you ever upload to a platform and your audio is quieter than it sounds in resolve, it's because your true peak level was too high!

In regards to Audio, you should always get 30 seconds of room tone so you can put that into the silent parts of your video

Thanks Casey. Yea, I am right at the bottom of the editing food chain, only making shorts and stem vids for a historic flight. This said, fusion has already helped a lot with moving arrows for drift and airflow vectors, as well as messing with 360 footage. I am coming back to davinci and the PC will hopefully get a grip. Con-fusion isn't easy, but from what I have seen it will be worth learning. Colour page is amazing, particularly for our use as the clips could be filmed months apart in different conditions. Opportunity based, you cannot always set things up. Great stuff, thanks again.

Thanks Casey. I've been learning as much as I can about all the rudimentary basics. I'm extremely slow, but after about two months, I'm halfway through my first video. The majority of my frustration comes from lag when I try to rewatch and critique my efforts. Unfortunately, even if I pre-render clips, I still experience latency issues and it hinders my progress.

Casey, as always a great video, between you and Mostyn, Darren that is, you are both the best at explaining DaVinci, oh and Alex. What would have been interesting is what proxy settings you would've used. For example, use a next studio ultra with those types of encoders, which type of proxies is the million dollar question my friend. I shoot with a Sony A1, 8K, mainly because I'm rubbish, but at least I can reframe up to 4 times and still keep 4K resolution. Appreciate your busy and wishing you and yours a wonderful Christmas.

How to match the quality of all videos. Not talking about colour matching(!). Final edit may be in ful HD, not necessarily in 4k. Searched thought YT, no success.

Color Space. What option would people choose for video games? These preset options i need to know more about. Well for video game editing. Every single game is different so it gets pretty annoyingly complicated. If one of these presets is specifically for video game editing I could mess with it or them. Not sure, thanks. Great upload as always.

If it's a video capture of the gameplay it's likely just rec.709, which won't need color managed unless you're doing something really tricky like matching it with a face cam and doing some heavy compositing or something.

I had a problem in Da Vinci Resolve when I wanted to use the Effects - Toolbox - Video Transitions tool. The problem is that when I moved the mouse over a specific effect, I could see how it worked, but I could not apply the effect to the video materials edited in Timeline. And I don't know why - I don't know what's wrong. I updated DaVinci from version 18.5 to the new 18.6 and the problem was the same - updating the program did not solve the problem - which means that I probably must have done something else wrong, probably some so-called minor (but important) detail.

I tried using proxy video a few times and finally quit trying because it was taking longer to fix it than if I just used the 4K footage. Every single clip of my video, after it switched back to the 4K version, was about 3 to 5 frames off of where I cut it. In some cases of course that's OK, but many times it messed things up. So I would have to go and move over every single clip 3 to 5 frames. I never could figure out why that was happening and I never found anyone else who was having that problem. Any ideas or suggestions? I'm not opposed to using proxies, but I am opposed to wasting time re-editing every single clip in my movie.

Well, maybe I do something wrong, but the thing with the proxies is that they don't disappear from your computer after you're finished. A couple of months ago I suddenly noticed that my PC ran out of free space, and spent a few hours trying to understand why. Turned out, proxies from several projects ate up around 250 GB of disc space. I used them while I was working on the projects, but after I was done, they just stayed and it stacked over time. And now I don't use proxies.

    • @CaseyFaris
      @CaseyFaris  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

Real talk: you need to get more disk space of you're going to do video editing. It takes a lot of space. If you're worried about proxies taking up too much space, you need to get an external drive or something.

2:58 - OK, this is the absolute FIRST "baked-in" advertisement that I have ever agreed with whole-heartedly. And I have never heard of this company. So many people's interview audio is so awful that I can't watch the video. I comment that they just need to have the interviewee record their audio separately, even if just on their phone. The number of people who never thought of that just boggles my mind. I know about this, and I don't even DO videos. So, having something where the interviewee doesn't need to do ANYTHING special, is great. Now people have no friggin excuse for bad interview audio.

That's cool but sound editing is not the same as sound design, for it to be sound design you have to create everything from zero, whether you use romplers, hybrids (like omnisphere) or any other synth or record foley yourself and edit it. If all you do is use sample packs and you put those together whether you use spatial effects or any other effect that's simply editing, not sound design.

RE: Keyboard shortcuts, can I just say the ones you mention are the MOST important I think. The ones most editors will use are blade tool, ripple end and start and there are a handful of similar ones. I use a Logitech G503 Hero mouse, and I can map them to my index and thumb while I'm editing. It makes editing almost faster than I'm able to think about it. I think besides keyboard shortcuts, you can't understate the importance of a good mouse with mappable keys.

Proxies are huge indeed. It's great looking through some footage at 64x speed when editing.
The only issue with it is, depending on what you edit, it may take a lot of disk space.
500~ GB of raw footage turned into 2.5~ TB of proxies. Not ideal, but can probably be reduced with lower resolution ones.
Also, it did take hours to make, but that can all be done while I'm not at the PC, sleeping, eating, etc.

Okay, I did not know I could select the empty space and delete that. Been selecting *everything* after the cut and dragging it to where I cut the last clip. 🤦‍♂️

Thanks so much Case. One thing that drives the absolute madness over my eyes is the symmetry transform in everything. If I want to resize se thing from the left I want to resize it from that side only, not from both. This is not a feature and I forever curse whoever come up with this as a default with wooden spoon getting stuck in your kitchen drawer for the rest of your days!.

Great tips. Do you change the proxy resolution or leave it on auto? I've observed that for 4K material, the proxies are 4K as well, and I've assumed that the proxies would be smaller.

I actually swapped to Davinci (bought the studio version after making a few videos with free) because of the colour page. Maybe because I am a photographer first, but I couldn't imagine not 'fixing' colours as part of the process. The interface is just a different league compared to PP, just to me personally more intuitive. Watched a few tutes from different people and I'm using I guess a intermediate level node tree. Love nodes, the modularity just makes sense to me.
