SP00NTEK Flavor Enhancing Spoon Teardown / Debunking

  • I kept seeing this device in various channels I watch and noticed that even though they had tested it, they never decided to look inside to see what it really was doing.
    After Thunderf00t's debunking and testing video (yumm eating low voltage spoons) I wanted to see what this thing was made of. For some reason they are still for sale on Amazon, so I bought one just the sole purpose of ripping it to pieces to see what the "technology" was that allegedly changed the way things tasted.
    Turns out, it's a 12v battery connected to a mosfet with a pair of resistors and a white LED. The PCB is incredibly thin. It's essentially a touch activated spoon flashlight.
    Only problem is, you can only use it when its in your mouth and the light points the wrong way. Also, it is disposable and hand washable only, and not microwave safe. for $30. Anyway.
    I think this is the general design.
    imgur.com/a/vI5GCmd (both schematic and tinkercad layout)
    I might throw the remnants under the microscope and verify a few of my theories if there is enough interest. I don't know the exact mosfet or bjt part #. I think it's a mosfet but not 100% sure.
    Sortedfood reviewed it in this episode. • Reviewing Crowd Funded...
    Thunderf00t debunked it thoroughly and licked electric spoons in this video. • SpoonTEK: BUSTED!!
    Thanks to them both for inspiring me to throw away $30 on a disposable spoon-flashlight.
    By the way, Ads are off on this video.

    Great video! Spoon flashlight is the multi-tool I never needed!

    😆 So... it's supposed to zap your tastebuds? Or maybe induce a Pavlovian response when the light comes on? We humans are wonderfully weird creatures. Thank you for showing us what's inside the thing!
    ...although, this is a little bad: now I'm tempted to take apart the anti-nausea bracelet sitting uselessly and prettily on my bathroom counter to see the "tek" in it, but it was a hundred-some-dollar present. Maybe if I come across a cheaper one....

      Also, did you get that kayak out of the water or you still planning the return trip?

    That's the best gift to give to someone you don't really like right there. Lol. How do they come up with such garbage ideas, and on the other hand, how do we always buy this garbage. Cheer Frank. 😀

    Love your detailed repair / maint. videos on projectors. Thanks ! Quick question - I can't get to the service menu on my ht1070a by using the menu, mode+enter approach. I fluked into it one time but can't repeat it and only have 20 seconds per attempt before it auto shuts down. Any idea what I'm doing wrong ?

    • @FixitFrank
      @FixitFrank  ปีที่แล้ว

      if its auto shutting down, you may be doing the steps right but the fault might have already triggered the shutdown process. Whats the main issue you are having?

    • @csbph
      @csbph ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@FixitFrank Thanks--problem is only the auto shut down--first it was after 40 minutes. Now it's after 30s. Picture is totally fine before it shuts down; 2 fans + bulb fan spinning well. lamp indicator turns red at shutdown; after a minute the power ind. is red for a second, then orange. Service menu code brings up service gamma menu.

      Check the lens of the bulb. Make sure it has the proper red/blue IR block coating. That can cause all sorts of crazy issues like you describe. If you still have your old bulb, try swapping the front lens/glass. And just to be sure, you are pressing Menu, then Source and Enter at the same time to access the menu.
      It also could be bulb related. If you are under replacement warranty with your bulb supplier, you may want to try another just to rule it out. Flaky/questionable bulbs will drive you mad chasing ghost problems.

      Thanks man! Yeah this is a wild one. I watch Thunderf00ts channel and he had a debunking video and it left me wondering what the heck was going on with this thing. I couldn't find any teardowns of it so figured, I'd make one. I love this weird pseudo tech stuff. Cracks me up.

    Hi @FixitFrank! I'm trying to replace my buzzing colour wheel on my Optoma Hd39HDR and can't find the part number for it anywhere! Any pointers?

    • @FixitFrank
      @FixitFrank  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Its even easier than that. Its an "HD39HDR color wheel". I see them on eBay sometimes. I use a company out of china called Time electronics. their email is gydz@timeprojectorlamp.com They are pretty reasonable and ship DHL. You can let them know I referred you.

      @@wwoodsyy unless they offer one or you are having trouble I'd leave it be. I'm not sure why but I've had poor experience with firmware updates. If optoma lists new firmware then it's no big deal and you're good to go.
