Well, thanks for this. I have an NTG-2 that I've never used, it came with a camera I didn't end up using much in general and never used for audio. And after a longer while of doing nothing with cameras I picked up a new one and am figuring out what to do for sound, remembered the NTG-2 and wasn't sure whether to bother getting stuff to try to use it or just directly go for a new mic. Based on the sound here I'm going to give it a shot, it doesn't sound like anything really special but good enough to be worth giving a fair shake.
I connect my NTG 2 through a 12 inch XLR to trs cable directly to a very light Zoom H1 taped to the end of a boom pole. Yes, you have to sync in post, but there are no camera cables constricting the movement of boom pole and camera and you don't have to worry about the quality of camera and interface preamps.
Certainly that's an option and a good one. I have an H1 and an H5. I've so far avoided the syncing but I know it's not that much of a pain and the sound quality is much better. Thanks for watching and thanks for your input
Thanks for the review. Naturally I have a question or else I wouldn't have watched the video. I take videos of trains using a Sony AX43 camcorder. I bought a Comica CVM-v20 microphone, but it's not doing the job. The problem is that I live out west and the areas that I video trains in usually has some wind that ranges from about 5mph to 30mph. A business recommended the NTG2, but after your video, I'm not so sure. Do you have any suggestions regarding a shotgun microphone to video trains when it's windy outside? Thanks for your time and thanks for reading this.
The Rode VideoMic NTG might be a better choice since it has a built in -20db pad that would help with wind noise. It also has a safety track that would record one stereo channel at your set level and the other channel -20db lower. Like the Comica it also has the stepless gain setting giving you the ability to adjust your level on the fly. There may be other mics better suited for your application that are in a higher price range. One thing to look for is the SPL or sound pressure level rating as this will give you an idea as to the level of sound the mic can handle before it distorts. Hope this helps. Thanks for watching!
A powered inline pre amp can be used to lift the gain. I use a fethead and cloud lifter which is powered by my zoom H6 recorder to boost the gain and lower the zoom gain
I just got a used NTG-2 for an interview project I am working on. I am planning to pair it with the Zoom H4 pro as my backup Audio From your video, I think the NTG-2 sounds a lot better. I will see how it goes, hopefully I get a better luck
Pairing the NTG-2 with the Zoom H4 should work great. Hard to go wrong with the NTG-2. Great mic. Hope it worked out well for your interview. Thanks for watching!
Nice report - I've had two of these mics for around eight years now hooked up to a Zoom F4 which pre-amps it pretty well. It's not very forgiving on people with sibilant voices though and I'm slowly retiring these and use them now mainly when getting b-rolls. But as you say, in 2021 there are better shotguns out there, and I've heard lots of good things about the Deity as well. Oh, and I can definitely vouch for your warning about battery leaks in these!
The sound was a million times better when you changed to the ntg2, your voice sounded really professional after the swap. Shouldve done that in the first minute!
What device was recording the VM NTG? It was distorted. I have had thát problem when my Canon M50 's audio gain level was under a certain level. I had to increase camera gain and lower the gain on the microphone.
This convinced m to stay in the online auktion for a bit on the NTG-2. I dont really need a new shotgun mic, I only need the foam windscreen, but when it comes along at auction, depending on what the final cost will be, I may even retire the chineese knockoff I have had attached to the camera for several years.
Thanks for this. Looking for an used mic and NTG-2 is often cheap. But the low input levels concern me a bit. Going for a NTG-4 instead. Do you recommend?
I think you'll be very happy with the NTG-4. Great mic, has a built in battery with a 10yr warranty when you register it and has a more balanced sound than the NTG-2. Worth the extra bucks. Thanks for watching!
I got an NTG-2 for free, with the caveat that I had to do whatever repairs were needed to get it working. I've opened it, and as far as I can tell, the only thing that needs to be repaired is one of the wires going from the diaphragm to the PCB needs to be soldered onto the PCB again, because it's broken off... You'd be hard pushed to find a better deal than "free, but you need to solder 1 wire first", even if it's an 18-year-old microphone
I agree. I've had an issue with the VideoMic NTG even though there is no indication of clipping on the mic, camera or in post. Did not add any post processing on either mic but yes the NTG 2 definitely sounds better. Still working on the issue with the VideoMic NTG. Thanks for watching and commenting!
QQ. I just got a brand new NTG2. Taking it out of the box, I feel a rattling noise up near the michead almost as if something is loose. Is this normal?
Thank You for Watching! A good alternative would be the Deity D3. Great mic and sells for only $99 USD. Don't confuse with the D3 Pro which is also a great mic but sells for around $200 USD
NTG-2 volume on the video seems to be much louder to my ears, video-ntg sounds like it's clipping and quieter, might just be me though, but that might explain why it sounds better.
The NTG-2 being an XLR mic is just going to sound better plus it was through a better preamp than the camera preamp. You are correct about the NTG, there was clipping and the sound is noticeably thinner. This was an issue with the NTG that I never quite figured out and wound up selling it. Thanks for your comment and thanks for watching!
Thanks for the useful review. To my ears the NTG-2 sounds significantly better than the Videomic NTG. I use the NTG-2 on a boom pole to a Zoom H5 for video interviews and I'm quite happy with that setup.
I find that to be the problem with any of those I've tried. Check out this video for an alternate solution th-cam.com/video/HuodB-_gmvE/w-d-xo.html. Thanks For Watching!
There are several cables and devices that will enable you to connect an XLR mic to a smartphone. There are a number of TH-cam videos that will show you how. Just do a search on XLR to Smartphone
The NTG2 is a great mic. I like having the battery option for phantom power although you do have to remember to take it out when you're finished recording. Enjoy! Thanks for watching! Go Shrimp!
What sounds the best to your ears, the Rode Videomic NTG or the NTG-2? Would you consider buying the NTG-2?
Rode NTG-2 did sound better to me. Thanks for the video
Me too! Thanks for watching!

Hello sir just wanted to say that these are the type of great well done and well informed videos I'm always looking for. Thank you.
Thank You! That's always the goal. Thanks for watching!

@@IsomPhilips I’m going to try using mine somehow in a portable studio, I have all kinds of mics too

I also had issues with the VM NTG with my M50. I've since sold both and using other Rode mics. Thanks for watching!

Wow, the sound of ntg2 i like a lot.

The VideoMic ntg audio sounds very distorted to me. Did you process any of this audio? For this reason I preferred the audio from the ntg 2. Thanks,
I agree. I've had an issue with the VideoMic NTG even though there is no indication of clipping on the mic, camera or in post. The ntg2 sounds very nice. Thank you. I found a ntg2 /w zeppelin shock mount and dead cat for $250.
That's a great deal! Enjoy the mic. Thanks for watching!
NTG2 had a more "full" sound with the bass
QQ. I just got a brand new NTG2. Taking it out of the box, I feel a rattling noise up near the michead almost as if something is loose. Is this normal?
Definitely not normal. Might want to contact Rode or return to the seller if possible.

What's the best xlr (female) to 3.5mm cable for the mirrorless input? I already have the custom one but the noise is very very frustrating.. 😓
