One of my favorite passions while working Security was learning about fire systems. One mall I worked at had actual Fire Life Safety guys that were full time, they were a huge help. As the years go by sometimes branch lines get installed (retail suites are always changing size and location) so System 10 may now service a different suite or area than in years prior as an example. I loved draining and filling systems. I got good at panels as well. I'm usually the only non "expert" that can disable devices, figure out if a waterflow sensor is acting up, heck even filling a system correctly (if you leave too much air in a wet system you can trigger false alarms etc). That being said, I only have experience with wet systems so I still have a ton more to learn. I think I might go into the Fire Life Safety field!
You should do it! I was a security director and learned all about the trade from the engineers in the building and the contractors that came in to work. After proving my competency and good work ethic they picked me up and its been amazing. Life changing

Retrofitting Sprinklers is difficult or costly. Think out of box or this case out of house. Aesthetic pvc conduit maybe appearing like trim or downspout on exterior walls connected to wall mounted sprinklers. Water released into exterior pipe once smoke or heat detector triggers.
neat idea, but cpvc pipework for sprinklers needs to be listed/approved by a test lab like UL/BRE/FM/VdS etc. and listed cpvc pipes have limitations around being exposed. Another challenge is preventing pipework from freezing which may break the pipe or impair the system if plugged with ice. Trace heating and lagging is not cheap, needs maintenance and has some running expense added to it.
i have hit one with a axe and the head did not go off. they work. had to put some heat on it to get it to trip.... Fire Department we had a small fire in a building to small to trip the sprinkle but big enough it was a problem. stupids left paint thinner in the stair well next to the ashtray.
Invented 120 years ago, still cost like $6,000 dollars to get installed in a home.💰 Not sure how much it cost else where but in America it's expensive.
Mmm glass tubes, with the liquid inside, that bursts when heated....and only still the sprinklers will activate when heat is present...not when the tube gets damaged, now I know how they work! Very interesting.
its useful but what use is it if people are not going to take any precautions from it ? If they had used this in Grenfell Tower along with smoke alarms, fire alarms, fire extinguishers and fire exits, people could have survived.
Yeah but how do you turn off the sprinklers once they start? Especially the ones connected to the town water supply. It's not like they're going to run out of water. So how do you shut off the sprinklers?
Whitney, great question - each sprinkler system will cover an area of the building from a valve station. This valve station or riser as they are also called has a shut off valve just below the alarm valve. Think of it just like your cold water supply at home, the pipe has a valve in the street, it enters the building and there is another valve just before the alarm check valve and any sprinklers. Remember a typical sprinkler will discharge 60 litres or 12 gallons of water per minute, most fires are controlled by less than 6 sprinklers, often only 1 or 2, contrast this with a fire hose that outputs 1500 litres per minute nd is not located just above the fire and needs the fire service to turn up and start fire fighting, which can be around 10 minutes after the fire starts, so a sprinkler is more water efficient and quicker operating, with less damage from fire and water if one occurs.
Only Firefighters or Fire Guard is allowed to shut off the zone valve. Everyone alse who is not authorized can not touch the valve. Beacouse each zone control valve is monitored by computer with sensors. Thats how the Fire Department know wher the fire is on.
I think there are some sprinkers that can be activated manuall but I I thinks its only common in an industrial application if I live in a condo which I do the buildings around are mall houses theaters and hosopitals and grocery stores I think a system that would allow for manual activatiion is limited to special insdustral building maybe an aircraft hanger or something int he above metioned buildings they have an automatic sprinkler system if any most sprinkler systems do not have a method of manual activation but most building like the above mentioned may possibly be required in addtion to having automaitc sprinklers like the things metnioned above could possibly be required to have automatic fire extinguishers like over a restaurant fat fryer such a system example here these type of extingusihing systems might allow for manual activation : th-cam.com/video/Ktnc2Xsub0s/w-d-xo.htmlsi=bOzksecpmp8Ki_QF
I live in an apartment and my bedroom is right next to the fire sprinkler system I regularly hear a high pitched noise. The maintenance guy says there is nothing they can do about it. Is this true? Not easy to move but the sound gets on my nerves
The most common pipe used for sprinkler system is black steel and the branch lines that usually have the sprinkler heads on them the thickness of the pipe is schedule 40 and for the main pipes that's Supply those branch lines is called the main and usually that pipe is called thin wall and its scheduled 10 thickness
Schedule 40 is the thicker pipe and they make it thicker so you can use a pipe threading machine to put threads on the pipe and then attach the fitting. Thin wall pipe is too thin and you cannot threat it so therefore you put a Groove in the end of the pipe and you and use a special coupling called a Victaulic coupling and a rubber gasket to connect those two pieces of pipe

Water is normally discharged whenever a sprinkler is broken or set off by heat, except for a dry system which is charged with air, this is to avoid frost damage, air will discharge first quickly followed by water - However I sense you are referring to a Pre-Action system, these have special control valves that only release water into pipes after a set of detectors sense a fire, normally before a sprinkler would activate - and therefor if pipe or sprinkler was damaged, these valves would still hold back the water as no fire was detected. This is explained just after the 7 minute mark in the video.
Are Europeans stingy with oxygen masks for firefighters or...? Cause in America in those scenes of firefighter in action each would be wearing oxygen. Also, in Europe, is it common for sprinklers to be in homes?
I don't believe they are stingy, no-one would deny protective equipment where needed, I noted they do have oxygen in some scenes (going into buildings) and perhaps the external scenes either do not need or the angle may make the fire look closer. I would not say it is common, each country makes it own legislation, they are more prevalent in Nordic countries such as Sweden, Norway, Denmark and Finland. The UK is becoming more aware of the benefits after Grenfell.
my true question for you is if you are calling scba oxygen how much do you really now about firefighting ??? scba tanks contain special compressed air I refilled a few of those type cylinders when I was employed at the fire department I was never shown how to fill a cylinder with oxygen !!! which could possibly be more dangerous and you would possibly need more specialized equipment to do so ???
Why aren't sprinkler systems electronic like fire alarms? This system seems like a slow process and it is! Couldn't it prevent more damage if it activates as early as the alarm?
Anki, sprinklers are heat detectors and available in standard or quick response. Additionally some sprinklers can be actuated by detection systems already, their use is not widespread due to risk of spurious, unwanted or unplanned activation. The odds of a sprinkler activating for no reason is 16 million to one, much lower than ‘false or unwanted’ alarms by detection systems. Imagine the potential damage caused by higher frequency unwanted activations.
If the alarm ever malfunctioned while you were holding / using something electrical, and suddenly got drenched without warning you could get electrocuted.
Some specialty systems can be activated with an electrical solenoid. Either a smoke detector or heat detector goes off and sends an immediate signal to the solenoid to open which dumps the water holding back the water at the valve. These systems are called pre actions
