I just purchased the new open bridge Commander 7X50 for $1500 from B&H Photo. I sent it back due to an internal blemish on one of the eyepiece inner lens elements. I don't know if it was a internal scratch or some defect in the optical coating. The replacement I received had a smudge of dried glue right next to the Commander logo which left a permanent blemish on the rubber. I sent those back as well. The third one looked ok but the left eyepiece was not lined up with the objective lens so when I looked through them, only half of the image was in focus no matter what diopter setting I used. That's three for three Steiner. The one set I did compare to my Fujinon FMTR-SX and well, the Steiner really fails optically compared to the Fujinon. The Fujinon offers a sharper picture with no distortion edge to edge while the Steiner is mostly out of focus except for the very center of the image and there is also visible distortion towards the outer edges of the Steiner field of view. Not acceptable performance or quality for something costing $1500.
This is Steiner Global Commander 7 x 50 with a compass, and it is the best in the world for marine usage. Hence, your comparison with cheaper versions, is like comparing diamonds and pebbles.
I have this binocular Steiner Commander since 1992 and every year during our sailing trip in use. Everybody from my crew loves to operate with it.
