@@jimnfl7134 Fuck, you're dumb. "According to Geldof, he wrote the song after reading a telex report[7] at Georgia State University's campus radio station, WRAS, on the shooting spree of 16-year-old Brenda Ann Spencer, who fired at children in a school playground at Grover Cleveland Elementary School in San Diego, California, on 29 January 1979, killing two adults and injuring eight children and one police officer." Just quit while you're behind, moron.
"I Don't Like Mondays" was a hit for The Boomtown Rats in 1979. It was written in response to one of the first school shootings in which a teenage girl trained her father's hunting rifle on an elementary school across the street from her house, killing two adults and injuring eight children. A reporter reached the shooter by phone before she was arrested and asked her why she did it. She reportedly answered: "I don't like Mondays. This livens up the day," an answer which shocked Bob Geldof into writing the song. Years later it was reported that her father had been molesting her for years.
As someone mentioned, this is based on a real school shooting that occurred in 1979. The girl responsible was actually able to return home before she was captured, and an enterprising reporter called her home phone and she answered. The reporter said "Tell me why?" to which she replied "I don't like Mondays".
Being an old fart, this is so emblematic of the late 1970s. The song was about an horrific incident but was so musically compelling. What was so inspirational(?) about the song was that the Boomtown Rats were a punk band and were singing about a real world event. I have a heavy freight of memories from this era.
The lead guy in this band (Bob Geldof) played the main character in the movie "Pink Floyd the Wall". He is the guy who put together Band Aid and Live Aid charities that were focused on feeding starving people in Africa. Super cool guy all around!
@@AtomicVampire1 You lucky bastard... lol Honestly, I admire this man a lot, he is one of the most important guys in 80s music to me. Of course his Ultravox stuff had the most impact on everyone, I guess, but much of his solo stuff is also quite underrated plus he was the mastermind behind Visage, played guitar with Thin Lizzy, was in Rich Kids in the 70s and was also even considered as the frontman for the Sex Pistols by Malcolm McLaren once. What an icon. Sadly I saw him only once live with an acoustic set of his greatest hits from different eras and bands in his career. That was actually awesome, a moment I'll never forget. He's a living legend for sure. At least to me.
@@asfdadfgdasfh4444 Thanks. No fireworks video this year - after last year's, one of the (new) neighbors complained and before I got a chance to say something very very rude to her, my brother agreed to curtail it. And just as well because he's had some crazy dental work and a back problem. @@asfdadfgdasfh4444 Oh, and I think the final cost on the fireworks last year was between $1000 and $1200. Not too bad. You just gotta watch for sales. Some places give me a discount. We do what we can.
Was always a huge fan of this song but never knew it was about a school shooting until years later. Still a big fan years later even after knowing now what it's really about. It just gives it a more somber mood for me than it ever did before. Lead singer Geldof is such a prolific artist.
Bob Geldoff has stated that he's sorry he released this song because it gives too much publicity to the girl (woman) and that's definitely not his intention. It brought her a lot of public attention.
I am more sorry that absolutely nothing changed. He can take comfort that every other country took notice, anytime it happened we did more to try and prevent it.
To me the best version is Bob Geldof and Johnnie Fingers performing it for the Amnesty International fund raiser that was recorded as The Secret Policeman's Other Ball (the entire album is awesome actually).
@@thomasbohannon2066 agreed.. that whole album is awesome, but as a first listen for Brad, thought the original was the better choice(plus better sound quality with video) .. definitely a "live -themed" stream for a song idea. In fact, any of that album would be great..

This song about a school shooting. When asked why she did it she said " I don't like Mondays".
this was like Charles Manson Helter Skelter situation, written before the TRAGEDY happened.
@@jimnfl7134 Errr no. It was very much written AFTER the tragedy.
@@jedislap8726 not, she listened to the song for weeks before theshooting.

She didn't return home - She lived across the street from the Elementary School. She never left her house.

Let's not forget that we was one of two guys who planned and organized Live Aid/Band Aid, with Midge Ure being the other one.

The song is about the Cleveland Elementary School shooting in San Diego. In 1979. The girls name was Brenda Spencer.
such a great song for such a terrible thing
They were absolutely huge in the late 70s with a lot of hits,
You need to check out Rat trap, no regrets.
Class band, would love to see you react to more.
Their "Up All Night" is the better song and upbeat. Check that one out.
You know, I swear that lead singer looks like this Pink Floyd guy. :)
Another great song by them is Rat Trap oh and Banana Republic
up all night.
