I love the idea of sustainable web design and as I’m working as an UX Designer for an online gambling platform (horse betting!) it is hurting me how much the more efficient and „better“ I get at my job, the more I’m wasting resources for pointless pleasure, causing addiction and causing animal harm. However I did notice that in your slide you did not chose sustainable colors, but black text on white background. So is it only sustainable „html“ or also video? Jk, please go ahead and promote this idea, we need more people like you!

Hi Karl, under ‘Accessibility Controls’ in the site’s upper right hand corner, we have a Dark Mode you can toggle. We have considered making this default since it uses less energy. However, large blocks of light text on a dark background can be difficult for some people with visual impairments to read. As with anything in this industry, it’s a balancing act. Glad you found the content useful!

@@TimFrick I was more talking about the Slides you show in the video? I just assume my mobile device used more energy to render a mostly white video than a mostly dark one?

@@karlgustav9960 Ah, got it. For a mobile device, that’s true. In a presentation setting, the same scenario I mentioned above applies: white text on a dark background can be difficult to read for some. This is also more difficult to give the user control over. I imagine ‘dark mode’ videos might look kind of weird.

@@TimFrick „one size fits all“ is really difficult. I’m not sure in which setting you had your call, but compiling things and adding a voice over to a separate (dark mode) video is definitely possible. TH-cam is a thing, and even though mp4 is quite efficient, just the audio on a web presentation) might be even more so

We chose to stick with the new brand identity of the Sustainable Web Design site, which had just launched at the time. We also spent a lot of time and resources on webinar accessibility. Captions weren't available in Zoom at the time, for example. As I mentioned in my first comment, sometimes you have to consider trade-offs. We definitely weren't going for one size fits all:

With all this said, if you're offering to create a dark mode version of this video, I'll definitely take you up on that. :)
